Sitting in DFW airport about to fly to Birmingham tonight.
My dad will be having quadruple bypass surgery in the morning.
If you are of faith, me and my family could use all the prayers for Jimmy.

Thanks everyone....

And it's explicitly in the SPS rules that you are allowed to ask for prayers. Just not allowed to send a "Prayers Sent," especially when you haven't asked for them.

Same story here. My uncle had a rediculous amount of bypasses at Birmingham and is in the best shape he's been in for years. Best wishes buddy I know that doesn't make you not worry but prayers are sent.

well update when have time... feeling better from everyones responses and talking to a lady who happened to be sitting next to me on the flight. Her husband had the same 25 years ago and no problems. also found out my uncle had triple 20 years ago with no problems. Its still a huge deal but thanks to everyone for a little comforting.

I think bannation of "prayers needed" is not total....just the trivial type found in the Sheep Pasture...like prayers needed gotta choose colored contacts or clear....

The tough stuff is the recovery. He'll be sore as you well imagine. Probably moreso from the harvesting done on his legs than anything. He'll be scared of coughs and sneezes for quite a while. He may have some panic set in from time to time. It's normal.

If you get a chance, tell your Mom to let all his buddies know the best thing they can do is wait a week or so after he gets back home and then set up a schedule for them to come sit with him for a few hours a day while your Mom gets a break. He probably won't want to be alone for very long and she's gonna be worn slam out.

Also, it'll be interesting to watch the changes that will come over him. He's never been more in tune with his own mortality than right now and the next several weeks. He'll probably be more emotional than you've ever seen him. And he'll probably be noticeably different in some ways after this experience. After he gets through the recovery, he'll be a new man. You'll be amazed.

My bypasses are 4 years old now. Tough first day, He needs to get up and walk as soon as humanly possible, and walk as much as he can. Stay out of that bed as much as possible. moving hurts, but is key to recovery. Hope they harvested his vein with a scope. My leg scar is less than 3 inches long and never hurt a bit - harvested with a scope and not a long incision like old days.

Surgery went good.. as I said quadruple bypass.. they removed 3 liters of fluid while on the bypass.. thats a total of 6 liters over 2 days (the rest came out the catheter) Was out of surgery and upstairs in ICU by 1pm this afternoon. They kept the breathing tube in longer due to the asthma..but they came very close to pulling it tonight but err'd on the side of caution. But so far things are going great and his heart is working better than before.

Really hoping this will lead to helping with many other problems he has from diabetes, sleep apnea and asthma.

I assume your dad's at UAB, which is doubtless one of the best places he could be, given the circumstances of his condition.
Prayers will continue.

with things like this- thoughts and prayers your way and its evident the support system is in place. If you catch hell from this board for posting a plea for support as opposed to"What's your favorite place our mascot has ****?", then I think there would be a lemming-to-cliff-exodus. Thoughts w/ ya!
