I'm going to tell you folks a few things about recruiting, the kluckers, and our

team. First, for those worried that losing the egg bowl will lose us some recruits, put that thought out of your heads. That will be the "reason" put out if any commits do "flip". Similar to how Manny Diaz leaving was the reason C.J. Johnson "flipped". Remember that little episode? Recruits aren't flocking to a school that just had an "anti-obama" riot complete with racial slurs and at the same time are in the papers for harassing a black kid because he is black. Word was that they really hurt their chances with a couple out of state recruits b/c their parents didn't like the racial stuff going on up there. At the same time though, a Mississippi kid just can't wait to get to oxford and play for bucky? I'm not convinced.

This brings me to the one thing I didn't like about Mullen and that was him poking them with a stick while we had them down. They are always motivated enough when it comes to recruiting, but with someone making fun of them, that will really motivate them. Someone with money and an ego will use that money to put someone in their "place" real quick. Bottom line is, we are going to have to get motivated ourselves and be smart about it once we are back in the game. And we are probably going to have to use every possible angle against them that we have, even though it might leave a bad taste in our mouths.

Now, to our team. I think the *** kicking by alabama had a huge psychological effect on our team. They and much of our fan base thought we were better than we actually were and when we got brought back to earth, we got brought back down hard. We haven't had the same tough mentality that we have had since Dan got here. I am also seeing something different with Dan on the sidelines as well but I don't know what is causing it. Lack of faith in some asst. coaches? Lack of faith in some players? Something isn't right and only people within the program know for sure what it is.

As for the future, we have what we think is a good group of young guys that just came in but it will be two more years before they can really make their mark on the program. That "Mississippi homerun" and auburn's antics the same year are taking their toll right now. As an example, we could really use the pass rush that C.J. is providing for the kluckers right now. If we can finish strong in recruiting and not be the victim of some weird **** at the eleventh hour, we can continue to improve our talent level.

Lastly, the word of day or actually the year should be PATIENCE. There are going to be ups and downs and Dan is going to like bad sometimes because of the hand he is dealt at times. We are a few years away from being a "good program" and we just need to avoid any disastrous seasons. We won't make any huge leaps but it will be gradual improvement. Also, Stricklin needs to understand this as well. I don't know what the reasoning behind scheduling Ok. St. was, but it could be a huge mistake and not worth the risk. I'll quit rambling now and let everyone chew on the above.

Outstanding post. I can speak a little on the Oklahoma State front. I know for a fact they scheduled that when they thought we be playing at Vanderbilt, not at South Carolina (not that it matters, if Franklin stays, at Vandy is a tough assignment for anyone). But I try to look at this positively. We've played easy OOC schedules the past 3 years, let's try this and put the 'battle ready' theory to the test that so many MSU fans want to see. Maybe it will prepare us for future games. And let's not forget that the exposure will be good from playing this type game. And if we win, and we certainly can, it will definitely pay off.

ETA: On the poking Ole Miss part, I don't know that I agree fully with that. Yes, we need to be smart (keep your friends close, and enemies closer), but Mullen did rally the fanbase by using the Ole Miss jokes. We shouldn't be scared of them. We also shouldn't go out of our way to embarrass them either, that's just not tactful. However we should be using every advantage we have in recruiting though. The racist stuff absolutely should be subtly mentioned on in-home visits. Play up the People's University bit.

I have no PATIENCE for not playing/coaching as hard as you can, all the time. Our effort for about 75 percent of the season was embarrassing.

I think you are on to something regarding the Alabama game. It was very apparent to me that the team was having a crisis of confidence during the A&M game.

I can't imagine that we wouldn't have been aware of the possibility of USC when we scheduled that game. If the OSU game was contingent on who we played in the East next fall, why not wait 5 days to sign the contract for it when the official 2013 SEC schedules were announced?

You're just misinformed on that.

That said, I took more satisfaction out of Mullen going 5-7 than I did this year with 8 wins. Maybe it's counterproductive, but I am glad we are stepping it up a notch. If we can go 6-6 with that schedule, we will have accomplished something.

Good point. And I don't know that it was gospel at the time. If I'm an AD, and I'm weighing pros and cons, I think the right decision was to go ahead and play the game with all the knowledge that was at hand. I do trust my sources on this, however, at least 75% of the time.

This will end up being my #1 issue taken from this season

I have no PATIENCE for not playing/coaching as hard as you can, all the time. Our effort for about 75 percent of the season was embarrassing.

Complacency during the easy part of the schedule made it pretty damn difficult for us to compete in the last part of the schedule. I expected some losses but 4 *** kickings was horrible. The people laughing at OM all season for their moral victories should have tasted a lot of damn crow on Saturday night. They were way more competitive than us against A&M, LSU, and even Bama (although the score at Bama doesn't reflect it much). I would still be pissed about the losses we had but if you don't believe that at least being competitive is part of the equation then you don't understand the dynamics of a football team when it comes to motivation, energy, confidence, etc. Getting blown out 3 times in a row absolutely had an effect on our play Saturday against OM. We wouldn't have been blown out if we had been requiring consistently high effort from the entire team throughout those first 7 games.

The same could almost be said for us in the LSU game. It was much closer than the final score indicated.

Have to disagree

When Mullen sat on the ball near the end of the half and punted to LSU and then they marched down and scored it was over right there. We were never back in it. They scored 17 in the second quarter and 17 more in the second half. We scored 17 total. We were blown out at LSU. No othe way for me to look at it.

forgot to add...I can agree with that about Bama and OM though. They were in the end blown out by Bama. I watched both games from start to finish though. OM gave Bama a much better game than we even considered. I still think the Bama game was our worst performance of the year. We looked as confused as I have ever seen us.

I don't think the Bears threatened Bama, but just did better than the low expectations people had. I will give the Bears one thing--they didn't quit. They actually outscored Bama in the second half, and kept Bama's first team on the field the whole game.

It may just be me, but I don't think the "racist" angle is going to work. Recruits can always talk to the players who evidently think the "riots" were a joke. Of course even a stupid Bear isn't dumb enough to taunt an athlete. Who knows, maybe it helps. I think it's a waste of energy, and CJ swore it was Mullen gong negative that turned him.

Poking the Bears is entertaining, but it was ill-advised to use Nkemdiche's jersey as a doormat. I heard the SEC is thinking of fining Mississippi for letting the fans take the field.

You would think that if we used the "riots", "protest", or whatever you want to call it against the Bears in recruiting, it would work right? Let's face it, Nkemdiche is black, Tony Conner is black, Elijah Daniel is black and they will all sign with the Bears. We have to up our recruiting game if we want to compete. You can drink the "Mullen turns 2* into 5*" kool-aid if you want. Yes, players are being developed in the Mullen era, but the majority of them don't have elite talent to begin with. Average talent with bad schemes = 8 wins against bad teams and getting passed along to the Compass Bowl. I know our recruiting has improved, but we have to get even better. Hopefully we can hold on to Brewster, let's hire Larry Porter away from ASU and let him coach RBs, move Knox to TEs coach, and that gives us a stellar recruiting staff, something we need.

If you're not upping the ante in recruiting in the SEC, your *** is getting lapped.
