I'm now officially sold that Koenning has to be let go.

After taking in our last 6 games, I just don't think he can stay. I might have been ok if we had come out and looked creative and did some new things and moved the ball well. That didn't happen, and it really didn't happen in the last 6 games either. I thought our playcalling way pretty terrible today. We didn't have an identity and it's been that way for most of the season. I understand this was one of the best offensive performances we've seen, but we have to do better in the big games and I'm not convinced Koenning is the guy to call the plays.

I like Brewster and I think he is certainly qualified for the position. But if not, I would really like to see us pony up and pay someone big money to be the OC. If we let Koenning go, I would assume we would promote Brewster. He won't be around after next year if he's still coaching WRs because he's too good of a recruiter and coach.

I thought the DL and the defense overall played better today than most of the season and I think right now, the more pressing need is to address our offense rather than our defense. If we make a change in coordinators, I would rather see Koenning go than Wilson.

Hire a great recruiter who can coach QBs. Let Mullen call the plays. This is a simple fix.

Sadly I have a feeling that Dan will keep Les. I just get that weird feeling that we'll hear "We've evaluated our staff and will make no changes". Certainly hope I'm wrong though.

We need to pony up more money for good assistants. I think our top assistant a little bit under $300k which sounds great to most working chumps, but when a big program can come along and double your salary no problem it's not much. While in theory it sounds great to just keep hiring the next up and coming assistant, you eventually are going to hire someone not so great and you'll end up with mostly losers on the staff. The great guys leave and when you have an 8 win season you don't have much of a mandate for firing anyone. At least if you're Dan Mullen. If you're a coach with balls you can fire someone after anything short of a national championship season.

Rosebowl posted there will be staff changes soon. That in itself almost guarantees no staff changes.

I'm not sure what is going to happen to Wilson but if we lose Jones somehow in the process that's going to sting quite a bit. From all accounts the guy has the tools to be dominant DE

Maybe that is why we played so wonderfully. The team already knew and it was a foregone conclusion that we would come out flat as a result.
Frankly it is inexcusable to come out that flat against an inferior opponent with that much time to prepare. The defense actually did well all things considered. Like the fire I saw in them. But it looked like tyler had not thrown or seriously scrimmaged in a month. Spent too much dang time in the deer stand and not enough n the film room and throwing to receivers.

Mullen don't need no stinking OC. He's the bestest offense coach in the world (period).

No, dude. Good grief.....

You are seriously suggesting that Mullen NOT coach QBs. That is about the most retarded thing I've seen on this board today.

Wilson showed today that he is worth keeping around. He is going to have to improve either the scheme or the talent though.

Inferior opponent? You should just stop posting. They were ranked higher than us and Northwestern is a pretty good football team that beat Vandy that I'm sure would have handed us our *** if we would have played them this year. Fitzgerald has done a good job with that program.

Yes, talent wise, they were an inferior opponent in terms of us being able to beat them. The result however, was very different than what should have been. Our offense was ****-TASTIC today. We use a variation of this offense where i am on staff. I have studied it since we started working it when Myer/Mullen were still at Utah. You must use the TE effectively or else it all falls apart. Where was our TE play today? Aside from Marcus Green crapping himself on 1st and goal at the 2, it was nowhere. This has been lacking all season. sallach is not a great coach, and Koenning has almost never used the TE in his play calling. Tyler also has rarely targeted them this season because he either can't go through his progress correctly, or he is not being taught them correctly. Also, Tyler was completely off in nearly every pass he threw. Defensively, I think State looked fairly good. They (NU) are well-coached, which made all the difference. MSU had much more talent, but our offensive staff has to have major changes. We have played poorly all season, and honestly, for two seasons.

Hmmm TE play you say.

Again from day after Egg Bowl
Is it illegal for us to run non spread formations? I mean I know I've seen LSU Bama and UGA line up and pound the rock like we have in the past. There is no reason that we shouldnt run the exact same offense as UGA given our personnel

For whatever reason we always split everyone out wide and do the same damn ****. It's time we put TR under center and pound Griffin away with Perk coming in to change pace, catch some wheels,
Screens, etc It's embarrassing the lack of common sense and imagination coming out of our offense. We say we tailor the offense for the personnel but that is a bunch of ********

With the god awful receiving core we should have had a look similar to UGA or LSU. 2 WR with 2 TE. Here's a news flash the tight ends can run routes too Les you mother17er. It was clear to anyone that we needed the TE help with TR on his *** all day every day. We needed quick routes inside and great route runners outside. Watch an LSU film. With our lack of speed and ability to get open the spread especially the pass first spread this year was the LAST thing needed.

17 this was a frustrating team to watch this year

I was not suggesting that at all. I was saying hire someone who can do that so Mullen can focus on play calling. Don't be a douche.

QB coaching is synonymous with play calling. Don't get all ******** because I labeled your plan as retarded, which it is.

Yep. Obviously I am not the only one who saw it. But watch film of Utah, Florida, he'll, even Bowling Green or whoever Urban was prior, and you will see that the TE was the weapon that put the dagger in opponents and opened up so much of the offense.

Mullen wasn't doing it. That's the point. He needs to quit ******* with special teams and stick with his strong suit, which is working with QBs and formulating plays. You know, Tim Tebow n ****.

If any staff gets let go, I hope it's Koennig. I know coaches have to let loose of things and let their assistants coach, but Mullen needs to be involved where his expertise is. Hire a puppet OC or keep Koennig, who cares. You're not going to find better than Mullen when it comes to those two things.

But the notion that Mullen should get out of the way like you said.....ridiculous.

If I remember right when it came to the defensive play calling, I believe the commentators said Collins was calling the defends today. I've been wrong before though.

i said the exact opposite of get out of the way Mullen. I said get out of the way Koennig and let Dan playcall. The only staff change I want to see is a more dynamic recruiter in koennigs spot. You are arguing with yourself.

Koenning lost my confidence when his team lost 77-0 vs ou. I would think, when down 45-0 u could get a fg. 60-0... Surely the d loosens up. Les? 0

I agree. I counted three times the same play was called back to back. The counter play ran to the right with Perkins was called back to back probably more than once, and two incomplete pass plays were called back to back. On the pass plays, the target WR was double covered the second play. I would think he is either a star at Tecmo Bowl or his playbook pages are glued together.

Doesn't matter to me who called the plays.

We didn't look lost. We still had several plays where the cb seemed to think he had help over the top but didn't. I don't know what the hell we're doing that makes that so hard to figure out. And we still miss a lot of tackles.

But otherwise, I thought our defense was fine. Not sure how much of that was a result of playing a team without SEC athleticism and how much of it was improvement, but defense certainly didn't cost us the game yesterday.
