I'm sure Renfroe will sign, but why hasn't he already?

I saw a tweet where only 5 first round picks have yet to sign. He was one of them.

I also saw on twitter that his new fiancé got a massive engagement ring on the day after the draft.

I heard he was thinking about coming back for his senior year to develop his 6th and 7th tools to go higher in the draft.**

Basically, he's waiting to sign so he can get a break. Had he have signed last week, he would've already been shipped off. From what I understand, he wanted to enjoy a week at home with his friends and family before signing.

He's not engaged either.

I figured

he was waiting for this reason, to have a short break. It amazes me the number of people that think its because he's thinking of coming back.

You underestimate our fanbase. Bonner and Stevens probably want to break their phones with how many questions they get about this daily.

Renfroe is in San Diego, so I'd expect to hear something about him signing either today or tomorrow.

This year's #1 pick was the #8 or #9 pick in 2012. I guess it's a little different because the guy is from Houston, TX and not Mayberry, but I don't think it's all that crazy for a 1st round pick to come back for a senior season. With Renfroe it's a good situation though going to the Padres, so I understand. Personally I think he'd be a little insane not to at least consider coming back with hopes of going to a team where he doesn't have to give up a big % of his signing bonus to California's tax and sports insurance pool. He gave the crowd a bow at his final home game before he even found out where he was going, so maybe he is insane.

Again, being from a town of 5 people, they could take 75% of his paycheck and he'd probably be happy. He's gone, but if/when we start becoming more of a nationally built team we could start seeing guys who are drafted so high coming back because they're not as easily persuaded by the mone-ay.

I'm still shocked Frazier didn't come back. I understand there isn't a single way in Hell he could replicate his performance from this season but I think he finally got on everyone's radar. Not a 1st round talent, but could have moved up from 6 and gone to a better team all while getting that college degree.

Really? I would have been shocked if he did come back. When you're 20 years old and a top 10 round pick, the best thing you can do for yourself is to start playing minor league ball.

Not offended by him leaving, but I just didn't consider that he'd leave when they announced he was drafted. Now that he has I guess I understand. He led the nation in hits and led one of the best defensive infields in the entire NCAA D1. Go out on top.

"Shocked" probably wasn't the right word. I'm a little surprised Pittsburgh still has him at SS though. Figured he'd move to 2B immediately.

To

think Renfroe might come back, at any point after the recent draft, is crazy (to be nice). Does it happen? Yes, but not very often. Hell you could probably count on one hand the number of times a junior drafted in the first round came back for their senior year.

I'm blown away that people thought Frazier may come back, too. Apparently there are a lot of people that that believed this. He had maxed out his potential in college. There was nothing left for him to do. I'm sure his signing bonus will allow him to finish his degree, if he chooses. Hell, it seems a few guys even have the teams that draft them promise to pay their tuition, if they give baseball up & go back to a school.

Did anyone else hear Matt Wyatt make the point about juniors getting better signing bonuses than seniors this afternoon. Said juniors have more leverage. Cited Girodo signing for a $5000 bonus as an example. Anybody else hear/agree ?

You serious, Clark?

See Evan Mitchell signing for $100k in the 13th round and Gravemen and Girado signing for $5k in the 8th and 9th rounds.

When drafted as a senior, you have no choice but to sign if you ever want to play again; therefore, you have absolutely no bargaining power.

I was surprised, too. Frazier is good, but 6th round is a pretty good spot.

Last night, he played 2B.

He's on the same team as Jacoby Jones from LSU. Through 4 games, Jones is at .450 and Frazier .438.
Not too shabby. I saw his first game he went 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout and he played SS. Small sample, but he's doing what we all knew he could do. Wish he would have stayed, but I wish him good luck in his future endeavors. He's got what it takes to play 2B at the highest level if he can make the transition with wooden bats.

I wonder what most of them use the bonus for. One of the football players in my last class told me Cam Lawrence bought a Hummer and a wakeboarding boat the day he signed with the Cowboys... which has to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Drafted in the top 4 rounds? Not dumb. UDFA on the first day? Dumb as hell. Should have waited until at least training camp.

I'd stick that $2.7 mil in a bank and live like a well-dressed homeless person until I knew for sure if I was going to be a pro. If it didn't work out I'd retire and buy a house the same day.

A lot of people think this because they don't understand how the draft money works. If Frazier were to come back for his senior year he would have probably got around 1k-10k instead of 240k.

The Padres will sign Renfroe for $2.678MM tomorrow, Baseball America's Jim Callis reports (Twitter link). This bonus exactly matches Renfroe's assigned slot price. He's in San Diego performing his physical.

I'm not familiar with how the MLB works, but what if Girado or Graveman turned down their contracts? It seems like they would have more leverage as a free agent.

What was Cam Lawrence's contract? Did I miss that getting reported?
Rookie UDFA contracts are pretty standard. Usually 100% nonguaranteed, and I believe they only get the league minimum ($390,000) if they make the 53 man roster. I believe the practice squad salary is lower. You can look at Vick Ballard's 5th round contract under the same CBA. He makes $500,000/yr and barely any of it is guaranteed. Just not very smart to blow your wad when you're not guaranteed jack ****, especially on cars and boats that lose value every single day.

To each his own. Hopefully Hunter, E. Mitchell, and all these guys have more sense than that. I saw Charles Mitchell not too long ago driving the same car I used to see him in when I first got to MSU in 09. There's hope.

Can't go as a free agency

The ONLY path for an American baseball player is through the draft when eligible. If you are not drafted, then you are considered a free agent. If you are drafted, and you choose not to sign a contract with the team that drafted you, your only option is to sit out or play Indy ball for a year, and then go through the draft process the following year.
