Yet I'm embarrassed by our fans predicting failure from someone they have NO CLUE about.
Fortunately Ash will laugh it off and use the unwarranted critisism as motivation, that's what leaders do.

Embarrassed? C'mon Zap, this is SOP on this board. Going negative defines the Rutgers Fan base. The media will follow in due course; they have a waiting audience to pander to.

Totally agree Zap, Ash is a home run hire. Last man has to be as good as the first; play hard, work hard and keep your nose clean. Your excuses are your own.

After watching a few videos, I'm impressed with his high energy, focus on fundamentals and proven success at the highest levels of college football. I'm looking forward to "Big Boy football!"

Ash doesn't sound like he'll let guys throw 5 INTs and get a Popsicle after the game. I can see why a JJ Watt would be his type of "motor first" player. No more Mr Rogers. RU got a real football guy. Will have to wait to see on recruiting ability.

20111 article after Ash hired for Wisconsin:

"What are the values you're trying to get across right now this spring?"

Chris Ash: We want to build an identity. When people see us on film, what do we want them to see? It doesn't matter about the front, the coverage, the blitz that we call. There are a few core things we want to see on tape. We want to see our guys playing hard and with great effort. If we play as hard or harder than anybody else, we're going to have a chance to win regardless of the call. We talk about playing with great fundamentals, better than what our opponent has. We talk about being tough. If you can play this game with toughness and be violent and get off blocks, you give yourselves a chance. And the last thing we talk about is just the consistency with which we do our responsibilities. The more we're in the right spots, the tougher we're going to be to beat and if we make ourselves hard to beat, we're going to win a lot of games. As long as we turn on the film and we see those four things, we'll give ourselves a chance to win.

Picture Coach Barney talking about playing with "violence" lol. Yeah this is what a 180 looks like

If you go watch some of the interviews, you can't help but be impressed. Of course how this translates to recruiting and wins and losses is yet to be seen. This is true with any new coach.

But he really seems like a no-nonsense guy with a vision, who will work extremely hard, develop our players, and hold everyone in the program accountable.

At least he is a know expert in Defense. Brought in by Meyer and praised by Alverez. He has the pedigree. Flood was good guy, players coach who was liked by the players, but we never really had any offensive or defensive idenity, and I think a lot of that was because Flood was not really an offensive or defensive expert with a known philosophy.

Agree, have to laugh at those already putting him down. Looking forward to him getting started and seeing how the players and recruits react.

I hope he goes after the best in the state of RUtgers and can convince some of them with his vision, but if not, hopefully he is prepared to get good players in Florida or the midwest as well.

I'd take the guy that's failed with the hope that he's learned, as opposed to the guy that's never done the job before

The basic premise of curedby's sentiment is flawed. He's worried because few of the defensive players at OSU list Ash as their recruiter. That's because he's only been there 2 years. His recruits are freshmen, and likely redshirts. Unless he recruited a 4-5 star good enough to walk in and play over an older 4-5 star...that's just silly.

You're not even close to the most critical Zap. Your criticism is combined with reason and logic.

Hey hiring a DC from a NC program worked before. Why the hell not?

Ok...I'll take the guy I sit down with and interview, look him in the eye and feel his passion and resolve. A guy who impresses me, a guy who's been around big time coaches and programs and owns championship hardware.
I'll take him all day everyday over a guy who's failed who's only qualification is experience

Now you're adding color to the conversation. My statement is no different than the posters who disliked Golden because he failed.

In addition the guy who's been around big time coaches and programs with championship hardware, did so in a capacity other than the Head Coach, of which requires other skills. Plenty of Assistants under big time Head Coaches with championship hardware have failed when they became the main guy.

Under that logic would you have kept Flood and hoped he learned his lesson?

I'm not referring to failed in the same job. Using Golden as an example, Golden failed at Miami and the Rutgers HC job would have been a different job for him.

RURM85 - sounds like you would be happy with Rich Kotite running the offense and Ray Handley running the D. I'm sure as hell glad that you are not our AD!!!

I love the selection of Ash, much, much better than a failed HC like Golden, and its not even close.

GSGS, sounds like you'd be happy with Handley since he was a Coordinator and won a Super Bowl before taking over as Head Coach for the first time. I'm also glad you're not the AD.

Yes, all things being equal and not being in the interview room, I would have preferred Golden. I believe the end results under both would not be any different.

The right thing to do would have been to spend the money for a current and experienced HC.

I believe when Charlie Strong, also a no nonsense guy, went to Texas there were a lot of players leave the program for one reason or another. Does anyone think that will happen here?

Once again the board is going for the gold in the conclusion jumping event.

The truth is that this was a solid hire, as CFB HC hires go. Ash has credentials that say big potential. But we don't know if he'll live up to that potential or not. And most likely, we won't know for a couple years (at least and probably more than that).

I believe that depends on how our boys get their act together. No more playing favorites. I believe they will have to earn the playing time.

Think OP is off base on this one. Feels like 90% of the board feels pretty good about the hire.

Yup, I'd agree.

personally, I'm 90% feeling pretty good.

but, plenty around here remember how many previous "coordinators looking to become head coaches" have fared. No reason to presume it'd turn out that way again... but, a little caution is okay.

this is a solid solid hire with potential -

Definitely would rather have Ash than Golden or Cristobal. Both have already failed as head coaches.

Spot on, I'm excited about this. No one knows what or how this will pan out but if he was good enough for the best team in the country we should be pumped. Golden and Cristobal had chances and didn't impress or they would still be coaching. Glad to see some new blood.

I really don't know how anyone can complain about the hire 2 hours in. You have no clue how its going to work out, so why not look at it positively? I guess these are the same people who see a $10 bill on the sidewalk and complain it wasn't a $20
