I'm very wary about UK.

if we go down 17-7 like the cocks did at halftime, do we come back like that? I do not know. Gotta sco' first and ram the ball down their throats.

This team has the best potential to play from behind of any we've had since 2000 with the ability to hit on long passes and score quickly. I'd rather not play from behind though, and we haven't had to practically at all this season yet.

So, yes, you are alone in your concern. I think we come out and dominate this game on the first few possessions before hitting cruise control pretty early on. We will be playing with a chip on our shoulder in this one...

I mirror your concern. I have since the beginning of the season when Auburn and Troy were the worry dejour. Reason? Simply that it is a road sec game. That's the only reason. Until we get up 3 scores, I'll hold onto that concern.

That's because we havent' been in an SEC stadium not called Davis Wade. We go up 10-14 to zero in the first quarter, yes, the skull dragging should start. I'm wanting to see THIS team go up big and put the dagger in the 3rd quarter so Mullen can put my 4 yr old daughter in to play . The 2000 team was up and down. Time for consistency. We still are in the "learning " mode on how to WIN big and put teams away. ala Troy.

not only that. Phillips wants to keep his job. He was pissed last year. We always seem to meet up with a team whose corch is on the hot seat and losing to us means that he will probably get croomed whereas if they score more points against us than we do against them..he gets to keep his job.

Based on what?

Based on the fact that they have been heavily criticized about their effort and execution in the past two games...as much as any team in MSU history that I can remember being criticized for victories. And that is mild in relation to what Mullen and our coaches have had to say about it in practice. They are going to play with intensity because they want to prove they are better than what they've shown the past 2 games.

Russell will be surgical in this game...and Bump will get our all-time receiving TD record early. Defensively, I look for a much better effort as well. Just my thoughts on it, and I guess we will see early on Saturday.

Also, 11 AM road game @ Commonwealth < 6 PM road game @ Troy as far as playing in a hostile environment goes...

Burning Uk's "secret weapon" QB they are out for shenanigans. I expect a closer score than I thought earlier in the year. I say 31-20..UK covers. I truly think we have the game in check , but UK scores late to make the score look decent. Perk better do his damdness to impersonate AD . Glad we're playing early , we have played alot better in the "JP" games ha here in the past few yrs?

I forgot who said it during Mullen's press conference

But some dumbass asked Mullen if he wanted to see how his team would perform when playing from behind. I mean what kind of question is that? I understand at some point you will be down and you want to see how your team will respond, but asking Mullen if he's going into a game against one of the worst teams in the SEC with the mindset of seeing how his team will play from behind? Ridiculous question.

On a similar note, I was very underwhelmed with the questions our reporters asked Mullen today. Justin Malone and Tobias came up, but no one asked Mullen how he thought Malone was handling the situation with Tobias and how he felt he was progressing with the uncertainty of Tobias playing week to week. As a fan, I would like to know that. Or how about who are some of the younger guys that got extra reps during the off week that stood out? I know Mullen isn't always the most forthcoming with information, but these guys ask some terrible questions.

You never played organized football did you? We're not going to have a chip on our shoulder again until October 13th. Probably because it'll be at night and at home. That will be off the charts.

Maybe. But it'll most likely be because we out-talent Kentucky.

Also, 11 AM road game @ Commonwealth < 6 PM road game @ Troy as far as playing in a hostile environment goes...

Don't see an 11 am game at a sleepy road stadium helping to fire up our players.

We'll play solid and win solid. But we won't come out crushing until Tennessee, which scares me because the MTSU game we'll be flat again and they've shown the ability to kick peoples' ***. And honestly, we didn't really come out incredibly emotional vs. Auburn.

They played with a lot of emotion against SC and got their balloon popped.....

I think they'll come out flat Saturday. It'll be an early game, the crowd will be small, and they will definitely not be enthusiastic. If we come out and score on the first drive, it could lead to a blowout. If they stay in this game, it will be because State is still sleepwalking.

I'm not wary of Kentucky. Damn people we have a good team and its about time we get some confidence as a fan base. I mean 17 it's Kentucky, they are usually a mediocre team who we usually whip and this year they are garbage. Troy would beat that *** in Lexington. I will worry when we don't ***** slap Eddie lacy in he first quarter.

Haven't scored a 1Q offensive touchdown since the UT game in 2010.

Have to jump on them early and they will roll over and play dead.

We are going to approach the UK game with intensity as a team, just like we have every season under Mullen. We haven't mailed in any of those games yet. We won't this year.

When you "take the next step" athletically, you do not NEED external factors to motivate you to perform your best. You self-motivate in the pursuit of perfection. That is what I think you start to see out of us against Kentucky. If you are competing against "another team" or "another venue" you are already two steps behind mentally. Competing against yourself in attempt to be "perfect" allows you to minimize external factors affecting your performance. I think this is what we start to see, especially from Russell and our offense.

There is always a chance we come out flat

I don't think we will but we sure as hell didn't get fired up against USA and Troy. If we bring the team from the 2nd half against Auburn, we win going away.

I just want to see if we're willing, or capable of blowing out any conference team! It's like we want to make it interesting and take our foot off the throttle way too soon. I'm tired playing with this lazy or compassionate mindset. I want our team to see how many points they can get in 60 mins..regardless of score.

When you take the next step athletically, that means you have better players therefore win more games. That's why Alabama comes out flat and still beats WKU and Ole Miss. I'd say they are in tip top shape athletically.

I see the point you're trying to make, and it goes without saying. But you originally said we'd come out with a "chip on our shoulder" IN THIS GAME. I disagreed with that. Any coach will tell you that you can get your team to play with that 'edge' about 4 times per year. The rest is coaching, talent, etc. which encompasses the motivational junk you were talking about. Don't over think this.

We'll likely have a 'chip on our shoulder' vs. Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas and Texas A&M. Not at 11 am, on the road, in a quiet stadium, vs. a team that everyone is telling us we should beat.

I said before that we'll come out solid and get a workmanlike win. That's maturity.

I'm not worried about UK because if we can't beat KY even up there then UK is the least of our worries for the rest of the season and we have nowhere near the team we think we do. We comfortably beat a better UK team up there last year with an MSU team that shouldn't be as good as this one.

Not saying we should be overly concerned this year, but you're dead-wrong about our series with UK. Most of the games are close, and they do still hold a slight all-time advantage.

* Mullen has never lost to Kentucky.
* State has won 4 of last 5 and if Croom had a decent kicker in '08, it would be 5 of last 5; in '07, they were ranked #14 and Croom beat them in Lexington 31-14
* We are 'healthy,' have had two weeks to heal and prepare for upcoming SEC games
* Kentucky just lost an emotional game they led at the half; lost their starting QB, starting safety, two RBs are 'day to day'; TE won't play; QBs are both FR
* We are #2 with a +3.25 TO margin; Ky is #107 with a -1.2

Look for the 'Auburn' gameplan ... establish run; add short, quick passes to TEs & RBs; agressive defensive pressure on Ky Qbs.

I am with this guy. Anyone who is worried about this game is forgetting that we are a good team now and that it is no longer the Templecrxxm years. You really don't seem to understand just how bad this Kentucky team is, either. The only team they would have a chance against this year is Arkansas, and their team this year might be worse than our dumpster fire of 2003.

This. Just as our players are learning to win.... we as a fanbase need to do the same. Holding on to the "woe is me" mentality just so you won't be disappointed when a letdown happens is crap. We need to try to develop a winning attitude as a fanbase. Get pissed when you lose... don't make excuses and worries about it beforehand while trying to save possible disappointment.

ETA: I'm not saying we shouldn't have concerns sometimes... but we got to realize when those concerns are actually legitimate. It's a flabloser-esque perspective thing. Glass half full vs. Glass half empty..... Winning vs. Not Losing.... both mean the same thing technically but the perspective you take guides your whole attitude towards it.

I agree. if we come out early and score a few touchdowns they will lose interest by the start of the second quarter.

You 2 guys seem to be missing the part where I said, "I'm not saying we should be overly concerned". What I correctly took issue with is the FACT that we DO NOT usually whip them. Even with our recent 5-year record of 4-1, we have a loss and 2 wins by just 7 points. In the past 10 years only 5 games were decided by more than 1 score, and 2 of those 5 were them kicking our ***.

I do think we should win handily this year, but we won't if we play anything close to the way we have the past 2 games. Let's also recognize that UK has played a MUCH tougher schedule than we have so far. They've lost to #6, #10, #19 and to a decent 4-1 Western Ky.

If we play to our potential I think we win by at least 3 scores. If we play like we did against Troy, we could lose.

And I'm suuuuuure you thought Troy would play like they did. USA game? We didnt give two ***** about both games.. UK has nothing to lose and nothing but to gain. I want the ball first this game.. get up 20-3 or 20-7 ...im cool. All depends on our mood. They oughta want to go out and prove a point were better than #20 in the nation and go up 30-0 at half. That will DEFINITELY send a message to our brothers in Tuscaloser and Baton Rouge.

Didn't say we WOULD lose, said we COULD lose if we play like we did vs Troy

We beat Troy playing like we did against Troy. And Troy is a better team than Kentucky is.

Yes, we should win. Have said it before. But we need to bring it this time. If we do, I think we win comfortably. If we don't, we could lose. Troy is actually slightly below UK according to Sagarin. Not that Sagarin is the bible, but UK could very well be better than Troy. UK has played a much tougher schedule.
