I think this act is as stupid and miserable as it gets, but can there be any real crime from the incident? They didn't deface or do harm to the statue. If this is a crime in the eyes of the law shouldn't Auburn fans putting a Cam Newton jersey on the Bear Bryant statue also be one? Again, I am not comparing the 2 gestures in terms of humanity. One was a harmless prank, and the other is a hateful and insensitive display, but wouldn't this be protected under 1st amendment rights? I am just curious. Lawyers?

I have a question for the nameless, faceless author of this editorial piece: WTF would you have the University "do" about this? And remember that this is a publicly owned piece of real estate we're talking about here. What exactly should they "do" about incidents like this? Put a guard around evey statue 24/7? Electrify every statue? Put fences, barricades, other obstructions around every statue? Remove every statue? Let's hear your suggestions, Mr. Editor.
Totally agree. Take two minutes to clean it up and then there's nothing to see here. Now, everybody not from Mississippi is looking at this in the news and saying "There goes Mississippi being Mississippi again. Ole Miss, they're the Bulldogs, right?"

Agree. The people who did it are idiots, bigots or just kids who are so clueless that they thought it would be "funny". There is no valid excuse for that kind of display, but I now see that the FBI is involved. From a legal perspective and the actual deed that was done, what differentiates it from this:
Not a practicing attorney, so take with a grain of salt: The noose implies a threat. If there is any evidence it was meant to threaten Meredith, it's a crime. Otherwise it traditionally wouldn't be a crime. Threats have to be specific and credible. If it's not Meredith, it doesn't look like there is a specific threat, whereas if it's just AA students in general, it's not credible. But some of the hate crime legislation may actually allow people to be prosecuted for thought crime; not sure. But I would think this could easily violate University policy without the university running into any free speech concerns, simply b/c violence is implicit in teh threat. Not sure though.
