In honor of bamassippi, I felt I should I describe my experience at a Southern game last year.

First of off, I will admit to being excited about the trip. I had heard countless stories of adult women wearing leopard/cheetah/tiger print pants, frat guys with tribal tats, sorority bitches with too much make up and Snookiesque hair, and etc. I wanted to see such trashiness first hand. I saw it all right, and I saw much, much more.

The ride from Starkville to the Hub City was awesome in its on way. The Pine Belt never fails to disappoint, and we were fortunate enough to see yard sales, meth heads, illegitimate children, the Collins Zoo and many more local attractions on the way down. We also saw a snake-handling church ( I assume) with a sign that said: "Enter to win a free trip to Paradise." We took this as an omen that our trip would be successful in ways we never could have imagined.

Arriving in Hattiesburg, we found the town devoid of anything resembling a cool college neighborhood. In fact, if we hadn't been wearing mustard yellow, I never would have known that a game was scheduled for that day, much less an important C-USA game against your supposed rival, the Pirates of ECU. (When two of your conference rivals are directional schools (UCF, ECU) and the third, Memphis, is named after a city, it doesn't speak highly of the little program y'all keep hidden in the Hub City.)

We arrived on campus to find the atmosphere far from festive. Grown men in jerseys, women in leopard print pants (The tailgate next to us featured five or six such women. They were all over fifty.), and various other hoodlums roamed your "scenic" campus. We were told that we wouldn't be tailgating in the world-renowned "District." It was explained to us that the District, which appeared to have been around 1/100th of an acre, was crawling with cops who sought to stop the raucous party that took place every home game as tens of transplanted Bama fans from Mobile and LSU fans from New Orleans gathered to watch SEC football and ignore the school they attend. Since the District was off limits, we tailgated across the street. The street separated us from the District by a span of ten or eleven feet. ( One foot for every Southern fan at the game.)

After watching SEC football all afternoon and hearing more ****** music than even Kid Rock could stomach, I came to the realization that the Southern Miss fans in attendance knew and cared more about SEC football than they did C-USA. Also, I learned that frats guys from Southern Miss openly discuss shopping at Urban Outfitters and that your women really, really enjoy copious amounts of makeup and the ridiculous "poof" that is so common amongst whores of the 99%. None of this surprised me, though. This is exactly what I imagined it would be like. After all, those kids from PRCC and MGCCC had to attend somewhere after they spent the previous four years earning their associate's degree.

And lest I forget, Southern fan(s) hate Ole Miss with a passion that has to be witnessed to be believed. It was the only passion I witnessed on the trip.

After waltzing into the stadium (not having to wait in line is nice), we sat down. It was about ten minutes to kick off. The stadium was practically vacant. I mean this. There are more State students in the State section section at 5:30 for a 7 p.m. game than there all total people in "The Rock" minutes before kick off. Southern came out and flexed their talons, and the Eagles led something like 20-0 at the half. We decided to leave. So did everyone else in the stadium. What fanbase leaves at halftime when they are beating the **** out of a so-called rival in a supposedly important C-USA match up?

We left and went to Mugshots. So did everyone else, apparently. I quickly figured out why: SEC football was on television. Of all the TVs in the old Hattisburg Mugshots, only one was showing the Southern game. The two or three large TVs directly above the bar were showing the Florida/LSU game and another game that I can't recall. Everyone was crowded around the bar to witness their beloved LSU Tigahs defeat Florida on a patented Les Miles trick play. When the play happened, the place erupted. Southern, which was locked in a close battle with the supposedly reviled Pirates, might as well have been playing in Alaska. No one watched the game. No one mentioned the game. It was an afterthought; just like your university as a whole.

Not only was the speed of the game noticeable slower than a SEC game, but your players didn't look anywhere comparable to the guys that line SEC rosters. This was most noticeable on the OL and DL. Both schools lineman looked small, slow and weak. The Liberty Bowl has shown us that they usually are.

You can come over here and brag about your wins this year, your wins in past years, your custom polyester wind suit that you wear to all home games, your trashy women, and etc. Really, you can. If that takes your mind off the fact that your glorified junior college will never register on the local radar ( There are only two colleges in Mississippi. That is how it has always been. That is how it always will be.), then I am willing to tolerate your pathetic posting. If my school were dependent on state funds to field an athletic program and had the smallest budget in a conference full of small ****, I would try desperately to make people think I exist as well. Thankfully, I don't have to do that. State may suck *** at most everything, but we will never be Southern Miss. For that, I am grateful.

If you've never been, you aren't missing much. There were more people wondering around outside of the stadium than there were fans in it. Honestly. No joke. The stadium itself is underwhelming and ratty. Our students make more noise than their entire place. We didn't have tickets. What was more was that we didn't even have to wait in line to buy tickets. You are spot on about that. As far as the campus itself goes, feel free to wonder around.......if you want to get raped or murdered. Come to think of it, the whole town of Hattiesburg is pretty much like that. I will have to ask you to ease up on the Pine Belt, though. For me, it's home sweet home.

and the stadium was less than half full. The student section MIGHT have been half full. The tailgating was a bunch of bros in cargo shorts drinking lukewarm Natty with a few guys trying to be dressed up mixed in. Note: There is nothing sadder than a USM student trying to wear a tie or khakis. They usually are wearing some wrinkled yellow button up, a black tie, and baggy, sagging khakis. They are then complimented by everyone for going "all out".

Ole Miss and State, for the most part, have the same type of students. Kids from the Jackson Metro area that go to either school are more less the same. USM students, though, are just...weird.

Hattiesburg is very much an SEC town. I would bet Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU, and Alabama fans make up around 70 to 80 percent of the town... most of which are quietly supportive of USM simply because they get tired of the multiple red headed step children running around demanding all the attention of the town.<div>
</div><div>I remember in 08 when they made the CWS, there were many of them OUTRAGED that only 2 or 3 business all the way down Hardy Street and 98W that had put Congrats to the Eagles on their marquees...</div>

USM hasn't beaten a ranked team since 2003 TCU.

USM hasn't beaten a BCS school that finished with a winning record since 1991!

USM is 'hoping' to win out to get to the Liberty Bowl as C-USA Champs where they get to face the SEC's eighth worst team that will be hugely disappointed in not making it to Nashville.

Love it, Studentdawg! I will agree with everything you just said; "Fattiesburg" is a shytehole of a town, with absolutely no resemblance to a legitimate college town. I will say this as well: I am from the coast, and though I do love the water, the area really lacks any other redeemable qualities. The majority of people from my high school that ended up going to college, went to USM; to major in business, tomfoolery, armband tattoos, or xanex bars (these, of course, are not mutually exclusive). Also funny are the few other coasties who decided to attend MSU. I know several people from my high school who only lasted at State for a semester, then for either their poor grades or missing home, they ended up down at either the JC or USM.

Other than their piss-poor athletics, USM's academics are of equal atrociousness. I remember back in 2004, many of USM's departments lost their accreditation for several months, and were latter reinstated but put on probation; oooh, a clue, Sherlock....

but how in the hell did you pass the Collins Zoo between Starkville and Hattiesburg?? Perhaps you took the long way around through Jackson for a stop at Babes and Dannys for a preview of what you were gonna find in the Hub City?? Would love to hear that one.......

since they began the SEC/CUSA matchups. I honestly have no idea if we could beat USM this year and it's quite possible that we would not, but there is something severely wrong when a team might play in the Liberty Bowl yet they also have a decent shot at a BCS game. If there is that wide of a gap between possible bowl games, something is wrong with the rules.

Hattiesburg CC and Cane Break are great Golf Courses. Got a couple really good places to eat. Only a short drive from New Orleans. Bar scene can be a good time. Just thought I would give the TOWN a bump. Thanks to Mustard Buzzard U I guess you could compare it to a hard 7 with bad tits.

casino gift shopt shirts, cargos, and frayed visors en masse.
safety yellow "Go Gold!" t-shirts over animal print capris
the Jones County "poof"
fleur de lis
alumni tailgating area reminded me of the wesson flea market
pretty much everybody had front row seats. you could yell a player's name and a lot of times, he would lookat you.
i heard this alot. "I went to southern, but im a/an(Ole Miss, MSU, Florida, LSU) fan"

and on saturday afternoon, $5 tickets, yall, we got some left!

WOW. Gators in bath tubs, wild cats in portable dog kennels and snakes in a fish tank. It is a site to see. Kind of like those "confederate flag shops" you see on the side of MS Hwys that are opened and operated by Black Bears.

To add to the Southern Mississippi University "college town" aura, I am from the area. I grew up in the area and know it very well. I lived there for 21 years. You would be amazed on gameday. It is just as studentdawg posted. The place is like a barren wasteland. I had a dear friend who was one of the 10 people that attended Southern Mississippi University about a decade ago. On gameday, he was tailgating and was "pistol whipped" by some guy wearing jnco jeans. Why? Because he took a beer from an ice chest that was not his (he was told he could have one too and the guy didnt know it, so he pulled out a 9mm and beat him in the head with it)Seriously?

Like I said last night, that place is ****, the conference is ****, and they have a **** team that has been elevated by beating nobody's.

Definitely a site to see. Didn't see the gators. They did have 4 tigers though, in what looked like less than capable of holding up fences. One kept hitting his head against it and it would move. Not what I want to see with underfed tigers. Saw a mountain lion and some wolves. All of which had about 8 square feet to move around in. I was disappointed that the "special of the month animal", a puma, was nowhere to be seen. I'd say it's worth the $5 though. Unless those fences finally break.

We would be defending USM not trashing it....I lived in Hattiesburg for 6 years, and it was, without a doubt, the shittiest time in my life (A lot of this can be attributed to my mother-in-law.) However, the fast food selection was nice....if that's what you like. I don't remember a single decent restaurant while I was down there. Bottom line, Hattiesburg and USM both suck, and the initial description in this thread sums it up nicely.
