I hear from the birds that Mullen will be in batesville tonight to see Tony Conner and Deon Mix. No idea what conner is going to do, like most of you I think Oxford or his family will be threatened into submission or he may just want to go. WT17 (gratuitous abbreviations usage)

Some coaches went to see Rumph play last night against Hinds and he had a good game. They won 35-34 in OT I think. Word around the campfire is we lead. He talks to our coaches everyday and he is supposed to decide in the next two weeks.

My sincere apologies if sauerkraut.

In other news, 17 the grove**and auburn. Happy friday everyone!

Depth chart looks good for Rumph

We lose Chad Bumphis, Arceto Clark, Sam Williams, Brandon Heavens, and Chris Smith at wideout. I think Devin Fosselman transferred out before the season.

AND...Russell is looking like a hell of a QB to catch passes from next year. I think Rumph will commit sometime in the next few weeks. Just a hunch

It's a good thing we're losing Sam Williams, I don't think he would have committed otherwise.

I get a little wooly thinking about Morrow, Tubby (in the slot), ^^^ this monster, Robert Johnson, and Malcolm spread across the field.

Word is that he is getting a 10th year of eligibility.

I laughed. Serious question though....does anybody know if Tobias Smith is getting/can get another year of eligibility? That would be Huge to have the entire line back, QB back, RB's back, and Rumph/Malcolm/RoJo/Tubby/etc. What's the word on Tobias for next year?

Morrow and Tubby are going to have to actually show me something before I get wooly thinking about them starting. Our receivers are much better this year than they have been for quite a while, but they're still only average at best. And Morrow and Tubby still can't get any playing time over them.

Not to mention the addition of Brandon Holloway in the slot and Shelby Christie, Scott Austin and BJ Hammond coming in.

I think Tobias needs to go pro before he becomes permanently disabled

would be nice, but not a wise decision for him personally.

Tobias has had 3 season-ending injuries in 5 years and a 4th one that really slowed him down.... He played one full season(2010 in a backup/run blocking role). At the start of this season, he had 4 career starts under his belt in 5 years. If ever there was a stone cold lock to receive a 6th yr of eligibility, he is it...

How?

He is not currently projected to be drafted by any site I've seen. He's an early-round NFL talent. The only way he ever gets a big payday is to prove to teams that he can remain healthy through full seasons, if not multiple seasons. Sure, he'd be picked up as a free agent either way...but his only real earning potential that can be focused on is the signing bonus. The only way to get that bonus is to prove sustained health.

If he gets hurt next year, he is never going to earn any $$ in either option.
If he stays healthy next year, he could be in the pros and getting $88k for scout team work or $288k league roster minimum(with little or no signing bonus)...or he could stay in college with the ability to make $1mil+ signing bonus before basically getting the $288k roster minimum.

Tobias should milk everything out of his college career he can because while he has the talent to play in the NFL he is WAY too fragile to play any serious time at that level.

Word from our side is

we are very behind y'all and UT on Rumph. A few weeks ago I think UT was leading, but you got to believe with their coaching staff and last week's game that you guys are in the driver's seat. He's not a burner, but you have to love his size and he has very sure hands. We really really want him now that Leslie is having grade problems, but it looks like we are out of the picture as of now.

I hear you but I'm sure he'll review his status at the end of the year, another season ending injury in 2012 would really be a death knoll for his pro career.
I'd like to see where he is projected if he can make it through our bowl game uninjured because he has really been playing well to this point.

The #1 must have recruit for us in this class is Justin Cox. Absolute MUST have given our db situation...

I watched the EMCC/NWCC live stream last night, and Cox was all over the field making plays. He's a safety, but he plays a good bit of nickel for EMCC and could transition to CB for us rather easily. Za'Darius had a pretty quiet game from what I could tell...seemed he was double teamed alot at the line of scrimmage...

Agreed, a lot of development still needs to happen with both. I feel like we know the talent level is there for tubby and the body is there for Morrow. They will learn what it takes, and Russell can get comfortable with them in the spring. "One can only hope Jack."

Cox is a no brainer

When Yancy is telling OM fans he's a state lock and 5 star talent, you know he's good. I have no idea why we are so high on Z. Smith. I havent seen anything from him that makes me think he will really help someone. Yes he'd provide depth, but he isnt anything special IMO. Cox on the other hand is an NFL talent

Agree. The tools are there. It's just a question of whether or not they'll be able to reach their potential. Some guys do. Some don't. One thing's for sure. They haven't developed on the fast track. We'll see if they're on the slow track and will be good receivers for us or the bust track. Right now, it could go either way for both of them.

I know Morrow is a totally different player working with a totally different coaching staff but given his disappointing RFR year so far I can't help but get images in my head of Antonio Hargro, another tall fast kid from the coast who we expected tremendous things from but was a total bust. We are going to need Morrow big time next year so I hope his poor performance this year so far is all about freshman jitters and lack of experience.

Bumphis is 6th in the SEC in receptions and 5th in the SEC in receiving yards per game. nothing average about that. Tubby plays the same position as Bump and Smith and Clark have made plenty of clutch catches for us so Morrow isn't going to see a lot of playing time over those guys. We spread the ball around and utilize the TE's so you aren't going to see huge numbers from multiple WR's but average numbers from all of them. Bump is the exception because he has really stepped his game up and wants the ball in crunch time and so far hasn't disappointed. I don't understand why people say our WR's suck or they are average when I've seen them make plenty of tough catches that average receivers don't make.

Just another example of why buying into the recruiting hype is pretty stupid. Lots of 5-stars are total busts and lots of 2-stars turn out to be pretty good players. I know the odds are better for a 5-star than a 2-star, but I'm not going to ever get too excited about any player I've never seen play college football.

They make SEC catches...no more. If you can not see that our WR group is no better than average....I can not help you, much less try to convince you.

I mentioned him simply because Coach Mullen keeps mentioning that we lose 5 senior wideouts (Williams being one of those). I am aware of his playing time (or lack thereof).

You've just been watching MSU football for so long you don't know what above average receivers look like. I do agree that Bumphis is above average (finally). But there's been nothing even close to special from any of the other receivers.

Exactly, our fan base has seen such bad wr play over the years....that now, just because our guys catch the ball we act as if they are good on the SEC level. It does go to show just how royally bad we were for a long time though.

"Eat a Peach"

You can't convince me because you have no proof. I'm not sure what an SEC catch is but if I heard that I sure as hell wouldn't think average. We play against the best defenses in the nation. I constantly see our receivers go over the middle and make catches knowing they are going to get hit. The party line is our WR's don't get separation, but on almost every play, I see a WR with his man beat and it's up to the QB to get him the ball, which Russell has been doing a great job of.

Player Yards Per Catch
Bumphis 16.9
Smith 11.9
Clark 15.9
Lewis 12.2

I just don't see anything average about that. We have 3 receivers in the top 27 in receiving yards in the SEC and 1 in the top 6 only 12 yards shy of Moncrief who has played 1 more game than Bumphis. Bumphis leads the SEC in TD receptions. We are 5th in the SEC in passing offense, which is not too bad for "average" receivers... Maybe it's you who needs the helping with your expectations of our receivers.
