Arizona State receiving stats against Northern Arizona by WRs not named Jordyn Tyson:

2 receptions for 5 yards

It’s just one game, but we might want to start by focusing on #0.

The other thing is Leavitt’s running ability. It should be tougher for him to run on an SEC defense than it was against Northern Arizona. I’m hoping that unlike last year, he faces an SEC defense when he plays Mississippi State.

Offense
-line up on the line of scrimmage
-less penalties
-get more push on the o line
- take more shots over the middle

defense
-don’t get shoved around
-get some pressure on QB
-contain him from running
-24 points or less

So, Hutzler just has to figure out how to shut down 1 player for us to beat Arizona State.

We’re doomed.
I think it’s closer to 2 players (Tyson and Leavitt) but I think the game plan from last week will be similar to stop Leavitt with essentially just trying to contain him on runs. I also think Jones is a good matchup for him with size and speed

A long as he's not running wide open across the middle every play, I will be good.

Wow! And they threw the ball a lot. I think they’ll be able to run on us though. Not like last year for sure, but enough. Leavitt had 60 yards on 13 Carrie’s vs Texas. I would expect he’ll get at least that Saturday night.

If you recall last year’s game, they started out running the ball with the QB on the first few drives and were successful with it. They soon realized they didn’t need the QB run because just handing it off to Skattebo every play worked just fine, so they went away from the QB run as the game went on. But it worked and I’m sure they’ll go back to it.

I am definitely concerned about our defense containing a running QB. It was the one area against USM where I felt like we struggled. And Leavitt is a good runner.

We probably are just out-talented when it comes to defending Tyson, but the goal is to not let him just destroy you a la Malik Nabers in the 2023 LSU game.

Nabers and Daniels could have scored 94 points on us that day. We had no answer. NFL guys playing around with not-quite-SEC-caliber defenders.

Brian Thomas was on that team too and he was an awesome rookie receiver for the Jags. LSU wasted a ton of offensive talent that year by not having a defense.

Yeah. And about USM's QB. Yes, he's pretty good. But there's a reason he's at USM and not at a P4 school. Cause there's plenty of them that could use a good QB.

I was thinking back to Skattebo last year. When we made Leavitt throw the ball, good things happened… but we almost never made them throw the ball. We stayed dropped back in coverage and didn’t load the box, especially on that final drive. It was 3rd & 5 and every person on the planet not named Cam Hutzler knew they were handing it off to Skattebo. So, I’m not filled with confidence at the prospect of Hutzler suddenly deciding to attack the focal point of their offense.

Problem for us this year is Leavett got a lot better throwing the ball as the season went on last year. We should have made him beat us last year instead of playing that nickel/dime defense all night. Not so sure that strategy will work as well this year.

#0 Tyson was the only ASU receiver with a catch:

6 receptions, 68 yards, 1 TD

which is a little less than half of the production he had in Week 1:

12 receptions, 141 yards, 2 TDs
Guessing he has a nice career on Sundays next year
