Interesting concept. Would've liked to have seen the entire list of teams for each year. Maybe I overlooked it.

A friend of mine recently began this website writing about current sports issues. It seems every year there is some type of argument or discussion about how certain teams do more with less and vice versa. So this article aims to put a value on teams' recruiting classes and their actual production. Let me know what y'all think.

Pretty good read. I was prepared to make a "Return of Jeremiah Short" reference...but I couldn't because it was a good article. I agree with Mizzou about the extended list though.

Two things: 1. what does every overachieving team have in common?

Easier schedule than those in the best conferences. 2. Recruits often get bumped up for offers from a big name program.

Doesn't seem (didn't read the whole thing because it was pretty boring) to a lot of other factors like probation and coaching changes.

He has the data for each team for each year, but only posted the "best" and "worst" for the sake of the readers. I'm sure if you commented on the website of a particular team or teams, he would be willing to share the information he gathered.

As he stated, there are obviously other factors that come into play (such as strength of schedule previously mentioned), but it is almost impossible to control all variables. I believe he did a good job with what he had.

I think #2 here plays the largest role. Think about it - most of the guys rating players don't have the eye for talent or ability that football coaches do for the most part. I think it's easy to just look at who a player has offers from and bump them based on that.

Chris Jones is a prime example. Two star player who suddenly gets pushed through the stratosphere after Bama, Florida, etc. get on him. Is he a good player? Yes. But he'd still have been a good player even if Bama and Florida never heard of him but would have been a two star offer that made our class "crappy" to a lot of folks.

Something else they have in common

(with the obvious exception of BYU) small, very localized fanbases. These are all "new money" programs. The underachievers are all "traditional powers" with a ton of fans who wouldn't buy a magazine that didn't hype their team.
