In sum, if you get the "Republican" vote in Jackson, it becomes a race about race.

The idiots who voted for Chumbawamba aren't smart. They are going to vote for the biggest liberal candidate who claims to be the most like them. They simply took the other votes from Johnson. Their strength is in sheer numbers.

It was rumored that Lumumba supporters were following Lee around where he spoke at churches the Sunday before the election and were putting flyers on church attendee's cars. So the CL article added credence to that.

The sadest part of the whole situation to me is that there is a fairly large group of very bright young people in Jackson (black, white, Asian, Latino whatever) that are sick and tired of the myth being perpetuated that everything in Jackson is a zero-sum gain when it comes to the races. Lee would have done a lot to change that myth.

Shocking that Bennie Thompson and scare tactics would have been a factor in this race.

What should be the most disturbing aspect of this situation is .............................

a sitting US Congressman went on record to support an avowed racist black nationalist who injects racism into everything he promotes.

Ironic that the article right below this article is about lower bond ratings. Watch for that to continue/escalate. This will be without a doubt the most destructive election in the city`s history. It was a sad day for the whole state.

well that's pretty much Bennie as well. I had a friend that used to do grant work for some medical stuff and he's have to go to Washington every so often. One time he and a group went to vist Thompson and he came back saying he'd never go in the man's office again that in a short conversation to the group is was incredibly apparent how racist he was.

the whole problem with politics is that the electorate is becoming dumber and dumber each cycle and it's on all sides.

Birds of a feather. Thompson is a racist himself. Thompson's fathead had

nothing to lose by supporting Chumpa Lumpa. The people that reelect him every two years don't give a **** who he supports.

Bennie is possibly one of the most racist politicians in Mississippi History and

that says alot, black or white. It will be a great day for this state when he leaves office.

Another tactic Thompson likes to use with white Mississippians who try to pay him a courtesy visit is to keep them waiting just outside his office for a couple of hours.

This is true, I am told you are wasting your time to go to him for help on a

business proposal unless you take a black person with you and that black person has
equity in the deal.

Sadly, the way his district has been gerrymandered when he does leave the person replacing him will be exactly the same. All that will change will be the name on the office door.

The person who takes Bennie's place will be his hand-picked successor.

It really wasn't much of a doubt who would win after the first race saw Lee winning big in NE Jackson. I knew in a runoff the majority of the Jackson voters would vote for the candidate who did not carry NE Jackson. All those thinking otherwise are naive.

Why would a white Mississippian want to pay him a courtesy visit in the first place?

Because you have to. Even though you know it's going to be a waste of time.

Lumumba can come to my house and call me a cracker every day if he actually does something to improve the schools, roads, etc, but I've yet to see anything to make me think that will happen.

Jackson voters showed samel level of intelligence as most of country....

in past two national elections. Amazing the attacks convinced the mental giants of the city that Lee was bad because he had mainstream support, yet the winner is known extremist who had advocated in past that blacks should form own country. Very sad that a once proud city has literally been turned over to a bunch of racist punks.....and yes, I would feel this way be it black, or white racists. David Duke mentality, or Bennie Thompson mentality? Equally destructive and divisive. Michael M(MSU '73)

That would just might explain some of the levels of unemployment in his district. You think executives from corporations who want to expand are going to want to play those games and the same games his state representative underlings play?

This type of campaign tactic is common....

and goes back to the early days of the USA. In our third presidential election, it was published in a number of newspapers that Thomas Jefferson had died.

No....

Bennie did not support Lumumba in the primary or any other election he's had. Bennie got in to defeat Lee, not to support Lumumba.

Of course. Because only smart people vote Republican

Enthusiasm against a candidate is rarely enough to win. Also, far to often we confuse mainstream with what we choose to listen to.

OK smart guy name 5 good things this country (or any municipality) has benefited from in the past 10 years that have come from the left? Liberalism is a cancer and a farce. It's not real. For whatever reason some of you self-proclaimed smart guys think it's cool to be liberal. I don't get that. It's narcissism.

As always, feel free to PM me your political rants.

But we're not getting into that on the board. The only reason this thread survived is because it's sort of about Jackson.

My point was that Lee wasn't strong enough to simply win on anti-Lumumba support, and that for some reason, it's always the fault of the idiots that voted for the other guy but never the guy who just couldn't get enough support.

I think the demographics of the city make it virtually impossible for a moderate or right candidate to win.

I think a moderate that knows how to talk WITH and work WITH inner city Jackson would be elected. The sense I get, both nationally and locally, is that the poor inner city is considered a problem to deal with, not people to help. It may take a while for that attitude to change. Look nationally with Latinos and the Republican party. Oops, we got smoked in the election, maybe we should treat you like people and not some infestation we need to get rid of! An exaggeration of the actual sentiments of the Republican party? Absolutley. An exaggeration of how some perceive it? Nope. It's going to take more than one election cycle to change that, but it will eventually, and then the Republicans will be able to compete nationally in Latino populated areas. Same with Jackson. When a moderate or right candidate comes along that doesn't just pander during elections or doesn't think helping them is making them be more like NE Jackson, they'll be fine.

Complete nonsense. Those inner Jackson people aren't thinking in ideal terms like that. They want a candidate that can give them something. They want the guy who will pander to them. You are giving them way too much credit. You may be correct on the Latinos, but they are different than the the inner city Jackson. Call me racist? OK, that's nice, run from the red pill if you want, because it's not ideal. But it's the truth.

No need ask what you mean by "those people" is there?

I think we crossed over the casually racist line a while ago. See you all again on Alcorn week!
