Interesting chart on the hurry-up offense affecting Scoring D

To me, those team do a couple of things in common:

1) They make you drive and limit your big plays
2) They run the ball

Both of those are going to shorten the game, and their number of offensive snaps per game.

What this tells us...

is nothing. Absolutely nothing. The author included a nice little tidbit about Bama but didn't bother to offer the rest of the chart.

Maybe it means that defense wins championships, but that wasn't his argument. Maybe it means that some teams recruit their players for offense and say to heck with defense. Maybe it means that Bama called off the dogs at halftime in some of their games and had a low snap total.

I just really wish he would have made an argument instead of wasting my time with an incomplete chart. I do thank him for taking the time to highlight the two conference champions of his 24 team chart. It almost made me look right over those teams who finished in 2nd place in there conference. But a champion deserves to have its stat-line in bold, don't you think?

When I was a little boy the Wish Bone was the thing to run. No one could stop it. Then came the veer offense and no one could stop it. Later on you got the West coast crap and no one could stop it. Then came that wild offense Steve Spurrier ran and no one could stop it. Then you had this spread come out and it could not be stopped. I am sure I left some out but one thing that all these have in common they eventually figured out how to stop it just like they will figure out how to stop the hurry up offense. The one offense that has lasted is the one Alabama has run. It is simple and all you have to do is out play the other guys. All these tricks and fly by night offense come and go but the old fashion line up and pound your opponent will never go away.

That execute win.


Do not forget that the fun and gun was the last gimmicky offense and it worked pretty well. So has the spread, which is just the west coast by another name. End of the day is that the head coach, and his ability to:

Pick assistants
recruit to his needs
evaluate talent

Matter much more than scheme.

But also don't forget that the gimmicky spread is working and even the great and powerful Sabin has expressed his fear.

Its simple as long as you are the most talented team on the ol and dl in the country.

All of those offenses still can't be stopped...IF you have better players than the opposition and those players execute the offense. Bama could run the veer and be just fine. Tommy Frazier sure did run it well against Spurrier in that Fiesta Bowl. Hell, Bama almost quit throwing altogether last Saturday. The best players win. The funky systems and gimmicks are for the lesser talented teams that need them...like us.

That's my point DC started recruiting players and creating defenses to counter those offenses.

Heck Bama make a living off the wishbone once Emory showed them how to run it... Bama has been succeptable to giimick offensives as anyone when they needed to look in that direction. I was always liked the veer invented by Bill Yoman at Houston. It hung 77 on us one night.
Tyler ran it with Rocky at QB, and it was a thing of beauty when executed correctly.
