Interesting comments from a high school coach

One of my good friends from work has a son who is about to be a senior in high school and is being recruited by lots of schools including State and Ole Miss. For years I have been telling him that he was going to go to State to play football which actually made me nervous when we started recruiting him (and yes, I called compliance to make sure I wasn't screwing up). I was talking to his mom about how recruiting was going when she asked me what the deal was with Ole Miss. I asked what she meant and she said that his high school coach, who has been very supportive of every school that called on her son, had a strange reaction when she told him Ole Miss called. He tried to put off the conversation but when pushed he basically told her that she really didn't want her son getting involved in the mess that was going on at Ole Miss right now.

This was a school in the greater Memphis area so I figure those guys know a good bit about Freeze. I thought it was interesting though because he really hurt Ole Miss' chances with that one statement. Did Hugh leave some bad blood in Memphis from his "Blindside" days?

this year has a lot to do with what high schoolcoachesare talking about. But I don't buy that Freeze has something in his past that iscausinghigh school coaches to lead recruits to State or any other school . That sounds very genespagish to me.

The type of things that have been rumored are the kinds of things that could get you sued for slander if not true. Think along the same lines as the Quay rumors we basically had an uprising against.

It's not a public accusation that ANYONE in our fanbase needs to be making without empirical evidence of truth...

I never once said the coach was leading recruits to MSU. His coach spoke well of all the schools who have come calling on him except Ole Miss. Which was the point, what he said about Ole Miss was out of character. And I don't think it was about winning football games either. A lot of the schools have been smaller D1 schools who have no chance of being competitive. I don't get the impression this coach steers anyone. It seemed like he tried to avoid the conversation about Ole Miss but was pushed on it. I've heard other rumblings and was just curious if something was out there.

between calling him a buck-toothed idiot and insinuating he did something illegal.

Its always the same response, "My sources from Memphis ..... but they nor we want to go there." Its like they dont know anything but they string it out to try to lead you to believe something was there. I call bs on the whole thing. Its not hard to figure out what they are insinuating.

Public Figures

Under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, as set forth
by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1964 Case, New
York Times v Sullivan
, where a public figure attempts to bring an action
for defamation, the public figure must prove an additional element: That the
statement was made with "actual malice". In translation, that means
that the person making the statement knew the statement to be false, or issued
the statement with reckless disregard as to its truth. For example, Ariel
Sharon sued Time Magazine over allegations of his conduct relating to the
massacres at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Although the jury concluded
that the Time story included false allegations, they found that Time had not
acted with "actual malice" and did not award any damages.

The concept of the "public figure" is broader than celebrities
and politicians. A person can become an "involuntary public figure"
as the result of publicity, even though that person did not want or invite
the public attention. For example, people accused of high profile crimes may
be unable to pursue actions for defamation even after their innocence is established,
on the basis that the notoriety associated with the case and the accusations
against them turned them into involuntary public figures.

A person can also become a "limited public figure" by engaging
in actions which generate publicity within a narrow area of interest. For
example, a woman named Terry Rakolta was offended by the Fox Television show,
Married With Children, and wrote letters to the show's advertisers to try
to get them to stop their support for the show. As a result of her actions,
Ms. Rakolta became the target of jokes in a wide variety of settings. As these
jokes remained within the confines of her public conduct, typically making
fun of her as being prudish or censorious, they were protected by Ms. Rakolta's
status as a "limited public figure".

two very different things. The money that the OM machine could throw into such a case could financially ruin 99% of the people on this site... even if ultimately thrown out. Not a risk worth taking, even if it's a minimal risk...

Besides, like has been said, there is no confirmation anywhere that I've seen that said actions ever took place...just a bunch of hearsay. We didn't like the Quay rumors, and this is the same thing, with the shoe on the other foot. Would be nice if we could rise above such antics just one time...

don't like Freeze. This wasn't in a ******** type of post, but was during a serious conversation. They didn't elaborate as to why they don't like him though. He may have beaten them more than they beat him, I don't know.

that there is "some" resentment of freeze among "some" of the high school coaches in memphis. some due to his rapid rise from hs to college head coach which has been duly noted on SPS....and it may be that freeze has or has been perceived by "some" as thinking he's hot stuff because of his situation. that said there has been a mess at ole miss. thanks houston. but freeze is working on cleaning it up. i've never heard anyone suggest that freeze has skeletons lurking around.

lulz at the idea of folks getting sued for slander on a college sports message board. it everyone who made potentially slanderous comments on a message board were dragged into court, the US legal economy would be booming cause there would need to be more judges to hear the cases and more attorneys to argue them. and the building industry would probably get a boost cause we'd be throwing up new courthouses every week to have these millions of trials in. and then you'd have all the others involved in a trial that would have to be hire (law enforcement, law clerks, secretaries, paralegals, expert witnesses, etc). it's revive the whole US economy.

This thread is no longer about Freeze/coaching...we're on 1st amendment now. check back in when it drifts back to interesting high school coach quotes. Thanks in advance.
