"The expectation is that Mississippi State will make a hire around the time NCAA regionals end, if not before"

Thanks Rosebowl, that narrows it down to any team possible except the ones going to the World Series.

The part about "around the time regionals end" is for any coach going to a regional/super.

The part about "if not before" means if they go '2 & Q' in a regional or didn't even make it to a regional.

That's some fine investigative journalism there Rosie...............yeah I tell ya, you and your "sources" are on top of this coaching search. Thanks for the insider info!

Does that mean they’re targeting a coach who they expect to lose in regionals this year? Or didn’t make it at all/out of college coaching?
That would seem a reasonable guess. And I know one home run hire who will meet one of those first two criteria. Refuse to get my hopes up too high though.

Regionals and super-regionals are two different things. Rosebowl is saying by June 2, if not before.

We're rolling with an interim coach until we hire a permanent coach. When we hire a coach we'll have a new coach and not a minute before. No guarantee but I've got good sources!

I would hope we could do better. Butch is a really nice man but IMO just an average coach. He’s had some mild success at auburn. After their World Series run it’s been mostly mediocre.
I'm not saying i'm for butch but auburn is 16-11 in the SEC and ranked in the top 10 right now. Projected to be a national seed. They've got 6 college world series appearances and Butch is responsible for 2 of them.

UVA has an RPI in the 60s despite being 14-10 in the conference. They're a good team like always but their non-conference schedule screwed them and they probably won't get to a Regional unless the committee just ignores their RPI.

I wouldn’t call 3 CWS appearances since 2019 average. You can eliminate the Covid year as the season was cancelled. He has his best chance to make some noise the rest of this year. Just saying.

Lot of folks downing this hire if made, granted he is not my first or second choice, but your right … guy can coach; would be nice to see what he could do with the support and resources we have. Don’t think he would leave Auburn though. Just have to play the waiting game now.

Which is how we know we're about to settle for Butch Freaking Thompson
if Rosie is anywhere in the same zip code as accurate.
Yea I just don’t believe him/think he really knows to be honest. I could end up being wrong but for some reason I’m just not sweating this really

When you say Sweating, are you talking about Butch, or this whole coaching search in general? Currently we are in the Stagnant part of this, which leads to names, Steve, Bo, Robbie, all these cats naming folks for what could/should/will be. Just don’t sweat it. We have been through this before. It was weeks upon weeks of guessing and not knowing anything week to week. I think WHOEVER we bring in, this time around, the guy is gonna know what the hell he is signing up for, and knows the pressure coming with it. And if they don’t, we will be right back here in a few years (Praying that’s not the case). Oh and if Butch did come, does he bring Foxhall with him??

Been there done that and paying the buyout to prove it
Very true, but ask Ol Piss, ask LSU before they hot with the pitching staff they had. Has Tony V. with 50 win teams how hard it is sometimes. Especially now in the SEC Baseball-wise. It almost getting to football level the talent Coaching to Players … oh and sorry NIL/Transfer Portal. It’s tough!

Was talking about Steve in general that I wasn’t sure he’s on the mark about whom we may hire. I don’t think he even has a clue. I could be wrong but if I am I am.

Nope, you are right on point my friend! It’s either GenesPage click bait, or let me hang these folks on for weeks at a time. I get it, but your average non subscription fan, isn’t listening to the Hot Board you’re presenting. I don’t care who tickling whose taint on this search, give us the straight up facts your hearing. If you have any. Talking about Steve, not you DawgsNCowboys87. If you Def-Leppard that 87, you just became my favorite poster.

Same, and more power to Selmon and our boosters if they prove me wrong. However, after all the talk of not wanting to pay Lemonis’s buyout over the last couple years and now that we’re on the precipice of the revenue sharing era, I’ll just be really surprised if we’re in a position to fund a big buyout for a sitting coach plus pay the salary that it’s gonna take to move him.

Again, maybe we’ve got some donors ready to step up, and if so, great. But I’ll believe it when the ink is dry

I always thought he was a good guy, but I never said he should be our head coach. He could be a good guy, but he is not qualified for that spot.

As a sitting SEC coach with multiple CWS trips, he’s more qualified than any coach we’ve ever hired except arguably John Cohen and the second run of Ron Polk.
I’m not saying he’s the right hire, but I wish people would stop acting like he’s some bum that the only reason we’d consider him is because he used to coach here.

This.

He isn't my pick but Auburn had not been to a CWS since 1997. Butch has taken them to 2.

Since the end of 2003, they had only made the postseason 3 times. Butch has done it 5 out of 7 years.

They are currently ranked number 2 in RPI.

Butch Thompson is a pretty damn good coach.
