only 3 SEC teams had more than 3 NCAA's before 1980...

9 of the 12 teams in the conference didnt start going to the NCAA Tourney until the 80's and 90's just like we did. It's just the natural progression of college basketball. Not to mention we declined a couple of berths due to race...We should actually be ahead of Vandy

60's- we were damn good
70's- awful
80's- worse than awful
90's- best decade ever
2000's- pretty good

wheels came off in the 70's and 80's for some reason

made for some very solid teams. We were 13-5 in the SEC in 78 and finished 2nd, but were left out of the NCAA. Unfortunately, we hired Jim Hatfield who destroyed the program, leading to the disaster of the 80's.

And I was just as obsessed with wanting to get rid of Hatfield as many on this board are with Stansbury. Back then, intermural basketball schedules were printed and passed out, so we named one of our teams 'Hatfields Gone' so they would print the out several hundred copies of the schedule with our team name.

Now I understand that the SEC is not great in basketball. But ifthe SECis the special Olympics, wouldn't you rather be a medalist instead of a loser. Not saying we should keep stans. I am wavering on if I'm in the "fire him" bunch, but at least we are competitive in our conference. Does he recruit better than most in the league? I guess my real question is do you think a new hire can keep the talent we have got in the past coming in like stans has?(i under stand winning woulddo that hypothetically, see the current football recruiting) The recruiter's talent brought in does keep us competitive, at least...

ETA... Im sure my grammar is not up to message board standards
Another ETA, this is not a flame towards c34(I mean the title),my questions just pertain to your opinions and views. then whoever else would like to discuss

First part of the 60’s were great; would travel over from Columbus. Basketball in that gym was something to behold. Rarely missed a game in 18 years.

Wheels came off in ’65 when Babe was fired. State hired Joe Dan Gold, who had only been an assistant to Babe for a short time. He actually played on the team that sneaked out of Miss’ippi to play in the NCAAs. Now, two years later, he was the head coach. From a 10-6 SEC record his first season; went to 8-10, 5-13, 6-12 and ended with another 3-15 season.

Gold was followed by another MSU basketball legend, Kermit Davis in 1970 (my first year as a student). Davis spent seven years as head coach and his 9-9 SEC record in his first year was his ‘best’ year.

Ron Greene was given the job and did an outstanding job in his one year in ’77-’78. He was a funny guy and convinced Gary Hooker to leave NY to come to State. Unfortunately, he never got along with the AD, Bob Tyler, and he was gone after one year.

Hatfield replaced Greene and after an 11-7 SEC record (mostly with Greene’s recruits) went to the NIT … It had been 16 years since the last post season appearance. Hatfield’s next two teams went 7-11 & 3-15 before he was replaced by Bob Boyd.

Boyd had been a long-time coach at USCw and was urged out of retirement to coach State. State had some talent, like Jeff Malone but in five seasons, never had a winning SEC slate.

The math teacher took over in ’86 and had losing SEC records for four straight years (3-15, 6-12, 7-11, & 7-11). In his 12 years at State, Richard only had 4 winning SEC records. He was also the ‘benefactor’ of the 1985 rules change that doubled the teams in the NCAAs to 64. Everyone remembers the run in ’96 but forgets his 4-11 record in the SECT … and in ten of his 12 years, his team NEVER won a game in the tournament.

When Babe left in ’65 until Stans was hired in ’98 covers 33 seasons and you have a GRAND TOTAL of 7 years with a winning SEC record. Before Williams (’65 - ’86), there were 3 WINNING SEC seasons in the previous 21 years.
