If you could change 1 play over the course of your football team's history, what play would it be?

I've only been an MSU fan since 2006 so I don't have much to choose from. However, from what I've seen, I would change the outcome of the 3rd or 4th down play at the end of the game against LSU in Mullen's 1st year at home. Change the jump pass to a PA rollout on 3rd down or let Tyson pitch it one 4th. I'm not sure how much it would have affected our program, but it would have at minimum meant a 6-6 season and a bowl game. Not sure how recruiting wise it would have changed things, but I think the overall perception of our program would be different. Maybe it affects our wins and losses under Mullen and gives us a 9 win regular season in there with us getting one or two extra recruits that really would have made a difference?

Thought it was an interesting question and one that we could have some interesting debate on.

I agree with the LSU game. Not necessarily the play call but just the execution. If Tyson lofts it instead of throws it on a line its game over. And with that win we never would have had to hear "MSU has not beaten a SEC West team besides Ole Miss under Mullen", "MSU hasn't beaten a top 20 team under Mullen" (I'm assuming LSU was top 20 that year), or "MSU has not pulled an upset under Mullen".

Also from my reference earlier today. For Keon Humphries to have caught Trey Rutland's first ever pass at the 2 yard line against South Carolina after Henig broke his collar bone.

any play that being reversed could have secured us an SEC championship has to be #1 above all others. This play gave TN a 17-14 lead over us deep in the 4th quarter of the SEC championship game and has to be the biggest impact play to our program in modern times. If I remember right it was about a 50 yarder down the sideline.

LSU goal line play calling
2) Ballard's fumble against Arkansas in 2010. We would have been in the Cotton Bowl possibly against Ohio State with that win.

4th down play @ SC in 2000. If Wayne Madkin doesn't cross the line of scrimmage we win that game. We then could have potentially won out or at least made it to the SEC championship game (lost @ LSU in OT and PigU at home in OT in SleetBowl 2000; Oxford too - but two loses gets us to Atlanta). In Atlanta, we would play Florida, who we destroyed at home.

But we have to think fourth dimensionally. If this does occur, State doesn't have the Snowbowl (so none of those wonderful snowbowl uniforms). State doesn't have the meltdown in 2001. State doesn't have the Croom ear. Jackie is still The KANG.

I do agree with the posts of 1st n goal LSU 2009 and the SEC championship game 1998. But the SC game cost us from making the SEC CG 2 out of 3 years.

I was thinking the interception in the 2000 Arkansas game game where our guy had a clear field for a pick six but stepped out of bounds and we were unable to score on the ensuing drive. A pick 6 would have won the game for us and changed our season and future for the same reasons you stated.

In no particular order 1) Hold on punt ret early 3rd qrt vs uat in '99. 2) FG..

attempt vs Ark in 2000. 3) 4th down TD pass vs SCar in 2000. 4) Failed QB sneak vs lsu in 2009. 5) 2 pt conversion vs om in 1997 {14-15}

Agreed, that play could have been a huge confidence builder for us and screwed the pooch on the 'burners year long run.

As an ole miss fan it would have to be the 03 LSU game. Any play that would have made :us win that game and we are 8-0 in the sec and go play GA in the champ game.

UTs 17th point didn't come deep in the 4th quarter. I believe about half way through it. Because there was enough time for us to go 3&out and they got the ball back and scored another TD. So changing that doesn't guarantee a SEC Championship.

Most of the things suggested on here doesn't guarantee a win. But it sure did ruin any chance of a victory. A victory would have changed our future position. Except the Auburn 2011 game.

ETA: But we didn't have a three n out. We had one Madkin fumble - one Martin TD.

It's really hard to pick one. We've been on the butt end of a lot of goal line stands here lately. Two is a lot in my opinion for the record.

I'll say this- and I hope this doesn't come out wrong- but Keefer dying really hurt our program. Having Keefer and JJ Johnson- 1997 could have been really special. I might be mistaken, but Keefer I think was going to get a medical redshirt for being hurt in 1996, which meant we would have had the JJ and Keefer tandem in 1998. We wore out JJ by the end of that year, and having the two of them- who knows what would have happened in 1998. In theory, we would have had a healthy JJ and Keefer for UT and might have pulled an upset and I bet we would not have lost to Oklahoma State and Kentucky. Jackie never had us ready for LSU, so it's hard for me to say that we would have beaten a team that kicked our *** 41-6.

I know that's not a play- but that is the one thing I would have changed about our program over the years.

Good point Todd. Keffer's freshman year was 94? Anyway JJ "has a groin" in the SECG. If we have Keffer that year....maybe.

But I will go with make the FG good vs Arkansas in 2000. We make that and we control our own destiny to another SECG.

Everyone talks about Peerless Price costing us an SEC title, but I'm still kind of pissed that Jackie left JJ in to run up the score in a blowout of Bama and he pulled his groin with about a minute to go. That's what cost us the SEC title.
