You are correct but they still didn't win conference. I think 2017 was 3 way tie kaneland, DeKalb Morris.

All they had to do was, when Geneseo bailed, just have 6 teams. Should have been LP, Ottawa, Plano, Sandwich, Rochelle, and Morris. But instead they added Sycamore... and then wanted an even number so they added Kaneland. The worst part is, this affects more than just football.

I've said this before, I dont think football was the demise of the old I-8...it was weeknight travel in other sports to Westmont, Sandwich & Plano. One
Lengthy trip to Lisle you can live with, but the 4 was a bit much. Westmont's football problems didn't help, but the Sentinels brought that on themselves...

That said, where would Ottawa be in the ICE? Wilmington, with a 1000 fewer kids, pounded the Pirates what, 3 years ago? The Pirates would be fighting with Streator for 4 wins...

If districts disappear, the next round of conference swapping may be driven by the Southland. If the bizarre Rich Township option to consolidate the 3 schools at LWN were to happen, the Southland is done. At that point i figure Kankakee will want in to the new I-8 worse than they wanted into the old one...Do the Tinleys. Argos, Oak Lawn Communities suddenly think that as a 3000 student Rich Twp rearranges the bigger schools that they want the new I-8? And a couple of district scenarios look similar to this...

As a Sterling fan I really miss the NIB 12. I’m not liking our new conference, we’re playing mostly all 7A and 8A schools now other than Geneseo and Alleman. Over all it’s a decent competitive conference but I really enjoyed the rivalry between Sycamore Kaneland Rochelle and Morris . When I saw you guys were going to be playing Plano and Sandwich I had to chuckle. They need to find a different conference or they will never make the playoffs ever again.

That would be kind of ironic as I believe they're the only 2 left from the original I8. If they left, we'd get sterling back and one more and we could call it the NEW8

Living in Coal City we were very fortunate to live pretty much smack dab in the middle of the Conference. So travel wasn’t a horrible issue for us. But I would of much rather traveled to Sandwich or Plano at 5 o’clock on a Tuesday evening than head up 55 to Lisle.
Bad thing is the old I8 is done and over with. I never understood bringing in Lisle or Westmont. I’ll give Lisle credit at least they had competitive sports. Westmont was a huge waste of time. Sandwich and Plano probably want districts more than anyone around here since it would bring back some of the old I8. They did get the shaft and it’s unfortunate

I agree on the Lisle and Westmont comment......they just seem out of place as suburban schools in a rural conference. The Manteno to sandwich drives had to be brutal or the Herscher to Lisle drives as well. I'm trying to come up with my dream conference and might post something later today if I get the time.

If this doesn't scream districts I don't know what does. Everyone including myself has an idea for what their hometown HS conference should look like, however you most likely would be stealing a school or two from another posters conference. Throw in some schools refusal to go to a conference where they fit in because they don't want to be associated with other schools and you have yourself one big cluster.

i liked the nib12 too. but the wb6 is a good fit (in football) for sterling. and to clarify, there are no 8A schools in the wb6. moline and quincy are 7a, galesburg, rock island and east moline are 6a.

From Herscher, Sandwich and Plano were much rougher than to Lisle

I have heard Pontiac isn't really happy with their conference, them and Prairie Central combo could become a possibility at some point maybe???

I like that.....so we would still have conferences once districts come in but mostly just for other sports correct?

Here's some history for you...Credit given to the Great Conferences page on the IHSA website...

1966 a new conference was formed, the Northeast. Charter members were Dwight, Lemont, Lisle, Marseilles, Plano, Sandwich, Wilmington & Yorkville. In 1973, Seneca & Minooka joined. Sandwich dropped all sports in 1976 when a referendum failed. Westmont joined in 1977. Coal City joined in 1978.

1979, the Interstate 8 formed. Charter members were Coal City, Dwight, Marseilles, Plano, Reed Custer, Seneca, Wilmington, & Yorkville.

The Northeast powered along...Elmwood Park joined Lemont, Lisle, Minooka, & Westmont for a 5 team conference in '79. Herscher joined in '81 and Evergreen Park in '83.

Marseilles merged with Ottawa, Yorkville grew out of the conference. Who replaces them? Surprise, former conference mates Sandwich & Lisle...

Another interesting coincidence...'73 Seneca & Minooka joined the NEC...the first year they played varsity football. '77 Westmont joined - the first year they played football. '78 CC joined - the first year they played football. '79 RC joined - the first year they played football.

A similar analysis could be done with the incredibly stable NCIC...or the Little 7. Or the KVC, which was really never stable for football but rock solid for everything else...

Herscher tried to get into the I-8 when Yorkville left, but Coal City pushed for that to not happen. so went independent for a few years, then SPC and Corn Belt before finally getting into the I-8

Could of stayed 2 divisions. Large and Small.
Large
Sandwich
Morris
Plano
Streator
Manteno
Coal City
Small
Wilmington
Peotone
Herscher
RC
Lisle
Westmont
Two cross over games a year. 2 find your own games. Large division is pretty solid year in year out. Wilmington can continue dominating the Small, RC would be thrilled since they could beat Westmont year in and year out. Now Plano and Sandwich are playing in a conference they have no shot in. Plus it keeps the girls and boys conference basketball tournaments going and keeps the other sports competitive
Any insight why Morris didn’t get in? Their enrollment is down a bit and may have ended up being a nice fit. Particularly in non Football sports.

Not enough of the smaller schools voted yes. I think CC and either Plano or Sandwich and Streator voted yes. But it was only like 3 or 4 teams. I think they would of been a great fit in all sports. Sure they would win a lot of football conference titles but in all other sports they would fit in and make the conference really deep. But it didn’t happen

Morris would’ve been a perennial favorite in football but obviously Coal City can hang. I think Wilmington would do okay also. The other contenders might struggle, but look at the alternative. Bringing Morris in to replace Seneca would have been the ideal move. Still weird that the I8 is what it is.

I love high school wrestling and even though Plano and Sandwich have been down the last couple of years, losing them will hurt. The conference as far as wrestling goes will be bad. Don’t see anyone even competing with Coal City. And I loved the mid season conference tournament. Won’t have that now either

The source I use must be incorrect then because it shows Quincy and RI as 8A and the others 7A??
