Iowa 40, Nebraska 10: What Does It All Mean?
by Pete Fiutak, CollegeFootballNews.com

Wisconsin is off to the Big Ten Championship
We still don’t know who’s getting in from the East, but Wisconsin is in the Big Ten Championship now no matter what happens against Minnesota. Of course, if the Badgers want to keep College Football Playoff hopes alive, they need to be impressive against the Gophers, but at least they’re one win next week away from the Rose Bowl, at worst. Iowa took care of that for Bucky.

Nebraska was literally limping in at quarterback
The Huskers just couldn't do anything offensively. Tommy Armstrong was a sitting duck, and it showed as he tried to chuck for big throw after big throw since he couldn't move on his injured leg. He only completed 13-of-35 passes for 125 yards with a score, and he only ran for 13 yards. Ryker Fyfe was available after suffering a broken hand last week, but he didn't come in until late. Iowa loaded up against the run and that was it.

The Iowa running game finally busted out
The Hawkeyes might not have ripped it up against Michigan, and it struggled against Wisconsin and Penn State, but the O line played better and better as the season rolled on, and against the Huskers it cranked out 262 rushing yards with LeShun Daniels and Akron Wadley each tearing off over 100 yards. It was the second-straight 262-yard rushing day from the offense, and now …

This turns into a fun season for Iowa
After the way last season ended, and with the loss to North Dakota State early and 5-4 start, to close out with three straight wins, the dropping of Michigan, and the win in the burgeoning rivalry with Nebraska makes the 8-4 season look a whole lot better than it did a month ago. It might not have been a 12-0 regular season like last year, but with this emphatic win, it was a successful year.

Nebraska might be disappointed, but it could be a different team when healthy

Wait until the bowl season to see the real Huskers again. Give them a month or so, and the quarterback situation will be stronger, the lines should be renewed, and this should be the team that looked so good throughout the first half of the season. There isn't the firepower there to roar back when down, and the defense just couldn't get off the field in the second half, but it was a tough stretch just to get into a position to stay alive for the Big Ten title. There wasn't a running game against the Hawkeyes, and again, the passing game couldn't click, but this was hardly indicative of the season Mike Riley's team had after a disappointing first year. Even with the loss, this could be a ten-win season once everyone heals up.

I agree with the one dimensional Tommy is a bad Tommy. You take away his running threat and we all know that's his strong point. We get behind and he reverts to bad Tommy, the old chuck and pray Tommy trying to do too much. The way the D played is what chapped my ***. At one point after the 3rd 50 plus yard big play I think I yelled. This isn't Ohio State!! Its Iowa!! Still in shock after the way the team slept walk through the game.

No excuses, ioWa had 2 injuries during the game. Nu should have won by 21. The ioWa offense is terrible. And its on the head coach for starting an unhealthy player at qb. Poor deciscion for a coach with his years of experience
And here it is... I new that someone like Pete Fiutak, who analyzes sports for a living, couldn't know more than husker message board kings...

Thanks RRP... for all your wisdom and insight. It must suck that Pete gets paid for his while you, who knows more than anybody, don't make a dime.

Which QB should have started over TA because Fife had a broken wrist on his none throwing hand or a guy we switch positions during the spring and held extra points.... Waiting for your answer...

You need a DL/OL and LBs to win in this league. You don't seem to have talent in numbers at those positions. They're also the hardest positions to evaluate when it comes to recruiting

The healthy one. If its the 3rd string so be it. At least theres a chance for a win. Playing a hurt tommy only guaranteed our chances 100 fold for an embarrassing loss to a team we have no business losing to.

That's called hindsight... Look at the board this past week and tell me what EVERYBODY was saying... If it's not Tommy we don't stand a chance!

It's cherry picking to come on after the fact and say what you are saying in this thread, pure and simple. Did you say this before the game was played? If so, point it out, and I will shut up in this thread and give you kudos...

I'll tell you what it means to me, I saw a game with one team that cared about the game and the other team didn't show up with any emotion.

I'm a game against equally talented teams, one team should not win by 30. But they did.

As time goes on I find myself getting more disappointed in the lack of emotion and preparedness for this game. The defense was ok except for 4 explosive plays. The offense had miscommunication nearly the whole game.

When you see other similar talent games, it's rare to see one team get blown out but we did.

Whether this is on the coaches or players or both is not important. The team failed to make a winnable and important game competitive. Really shameful. And if you are a betting person you would be wise to bet against the Huskers in the bowl game. They have mailed in this season.

And lo and behold, minny is up at half over Wisconsin. I hope the coaches and players realize what they left in front of them.

A healthy TA and we would have beat the team that beat Michigan just a little bit ago. It wasn't a lack of emotion. It was defensive execution of assignments and a banged up QB having a terrible day. Blame whoever you want. I would bet they win their bowl game because we should have everybody back AND healthy.

I'm not saying a healthy qb doesn't help the team but the problems were more than his. Complete blown assignments on D had nothing to do with Tommy. Giving up 40 to this Iowa team that ranked 121st in total offense was just as much to blame. If not more.

You're right, but it's a combination of things... if we could have sustained some drives and gotten points they wouldn't have had 40... game would have been much closer with good QB play.

Not gonna say a Nebraska victory but it would have been a lot closer... if only we would have played Darlington, like RRP said, we would have won... :)

Which year did you have no business losing to Iowa 2013, 2015 or 2016?
All of them. IoWa is so beneath nu. Thats why its alarming why nothing was done/will be done with past and current staffs. Need to go in a new direction already, as sad as it is to say it.

Your delusional. NU hasn't been relevant since 95 on the college football national picture. The Big 10 has made NU bitches.

It's fine for you to kick us while we're down... scoreboard and all. Just get your facts straight... won NC in 97, played for NC in 2001...

And please don't mistake our downturn as the B1G's doing... we have plenty of coaches to thank for that...

The arrogance here is astounding. It is crazy that this attitude permeates this supposedly "great" fan base. Perhaps another decade of mediocrity will teach some humility.

What do you mean by permeate?

It's crazy that Hawkeye fan holds an entire fan base to a certain attitude because of some message board posters.

That would be like me saying all Hawkeye fans are douches because they come here and gloat after a victory. Not true at all of course, several have been quite respectful.

If you can actually watch this game and say that a healthy qb would have lead to our un-imspired, unprepared team winning...then you are just not objective and are the riley equivalent of a "bloner".

We have our fair share of Internet tough guys, and certainly some of it is for show no doubt. But for the most part I have been impressed with the number of Hawkeye fans who have been respectful. Kudos!

You got a clicking Iowa on D and somewhat on O the best they can right now. You play us a month and a half ago with a healthy TA and it is probably a close game.

I made the comment to my brother when your season started that If they kept running TA like that he wont be healthy by the end of the season. Turned out to be true and was a big factor in our game.

Armstrong's injury wasn't due to too many hits or an accumulation of running too much. He pulled a hamstring running. There was no contact. That exact injury could have taken place in game 1 as easily as game 12.

Nebraska could play Iowa today and win the game. That game wasn't about playing this week or a month ago. That game was a head scratcher about a team that flat out didn't show up ready to play.

Nebraska lost by 30. Not a fluke. Takes a level of arrogance that is off the charts to say that you could win a game when 3 days ago you got your doors blown off. This is why people say nu fans are delusional and living in the past.

I agree. 30 points. Wasnt a fluke. Our offensive and defensive lines completely thrashed yours. And they would do it again. However we might not get as many big plays, or we might get more. Lines are where you win, and ours are worlds better.

I wasn't being delusional. I'm not calling the win a fluke, but Iowa scoring 40 with the 121st ranked offense certainly was.

Nebraska simply didn't show up to play and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Please don't take my post as some silly "we are still better". It was meant to reflect the complete lack of competitive spirit on that field by one team.

It's not arrogance. It's just that Iowa isn't that good of a program. They lost to an FCS team this season and are somewhere around .500 against Iowa State. If this was agaist Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State then the outrage wouldn't be there. But it's against Iowa, which is unacceptable.

Not all of us were pining for Tommy. Some of us wanted a healthy QB, even if it meant pulling a certain colored shirt off his back. Sure looked to me like our team was resigned to lose last Friday, perhaps they even looked like they knew if an injured TA played, that we stood no chance, and they went out and played like it. It isn't far fetched, not sure how else you could explain what happened there. Perhaps, if they knew the coaching staff was willing to do whatever it took to win, maybe they would have to. We'll never know of course, but it's at least possible.
