Iowa's men's basketball program dismissed McCaffery after 15 seasons as coach of the Hawkeyes, the school announced Friday.
Ben McCollum, ironically is the guy who replaced Darian DeVries at Drake, is from Iowa City, Iowa. He's going to be one of the top candidates for a number of schools and Iowa probably wouldn't want to let him slide to another school in the Big Ten, such as Indiana. The buyout would be significantly cheaper and would be a much easier pitch than trying to get a guy to leave a Power Four job after just one year where he has already built some momentum.
Look for WVU to give an extension and raise.

You're right and I think if it wasn't "home" for him, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Supposedly, Baker offered DeVries a contract extension today. However, DeVries refused to sign it.......as of now.
DeVries would owe 37.5% of his remaining salary if he leaves prior to April 2028. So, if my math is accurate, that would equate to around $4.5 million.

If Darian DeVries wants to go to Iowa, it will only be because it’s his dream job. There is no objective measure to argue Iowa basketball is a better job than West Virginia basketball.
Nobody should get mad at Devries if he wants to leave to go home. We benefited once when Bob Huggins left Kansas State and brought his liquor here with him.

If any one of us was a prominant basketball/football coach at a school on the level of WVU and we had the opportunity to coach the Mountaineers, every one of use would jump at it. If Iowa is DeVries' WVU, then I would not begrudge him for wanting to go. Honor your contract and be on your way. Sucks for us given how well his first year went, but that is what happnens sometime.
Loyal? Like Huggs jumping from KSU. Or us hiring DickRod from Jax State months after DickRod signed an extension to 2030. There is no loyalty from anyone- players, coaches, fans, conferences, the NCAA. Minor league professional sports, but only worse contract wise. A cesspool of ********.
Huggins only wanted to come to WVU because he was in Kansas. Had he still been in Cincinnati we wouldn't have had to face his ugly DUI a couple years ago. Being in Kansas or a chance to coach his Alama Mater. Tough ******* choice *** wipe.
Devries stayed at Creighton for 17 years as an assistant coach. He was at Drake for 6 years. This is the definition of loyalty.
If Devries goes to Iowa it will be because it's his dream job as he is from the state of Iowa.
