Is a class laden with Mississippi players worth it?

Given that Ole Miss and MSU are taking different approaches to
recruiting this year, with MSU focusing its efforts on signing as much
in-state talent as possible and Ole Miss trying to sign some of the top
ones and get the rest from out of state, I figured I'd take a look at
the state's history of producing talent.

Yes, the state has talent. But, every year the top 10 includes at least
1 or 2 guys that wind up at C-USA schools due to academics or low
interest, whereas in Florida and Texas, that caliber of school is the
most likely option for players, say, outside the top 100. Are there diamonds in
the rough? Of course, and this state has produced its fair share.

But, is there enough talent to justify taking the 13 commits MSU currently
has from Mississippi players bearing in mind that 3 more are committed
to Ole Miss, 1 is committed to LSU and 5 of the top 10 (as rated by
scout) are still up for grabs? Are there 22 SEC-caliber players coming
out of Mississippi's high school ranks this year?

So, without further ado, a look back at the state's high school players
who either claimed BCS offers or wound up being good college players to
NFL-caliber. I am excluding JUCO players because many are not
Mississippi products, but if they came through the Mississippi high
school ranks,
they are included. Also, I am looking at 2002-2006, since the majority
of those players have graduated and we have a good idea of how they
turned out. Bear in mind, the ones listed as good or busts are based
solely on my opinion, as I'm really most familiar with the Ole Miss
players.

Haralson (49ers), Deljuan Robinson (Texans), Jerious Norwood (Falcons),
Jayme Mitchell (Vikings), Timmy Duckworth (Saints), Nate Banks, Will
Prosser, Kevin Dockery (Giants), Willie Evans (Saints, Giants) and
Bryan Brown all wound up being pretty good players. Richard Burch was a
good one until he got kicked off the team. That's 12 players from the
state, 7 that made the pro ranks.</span><br style="font-weight: bold;">

Busts: Chris Herring (twice), Markell McKinley (Didn't remember him doing much), Jamal Pittman, Jay
Kirkland, Otis Riddley, Kenny Kern, James McCoy, Aries Nelson, Ken

<span style="font-weight: bold;">Moving on to 2003</span>: <span style="font-weight: bold;">The state again produced some good talent, but most of it was unexpected as several top players turned out to be busts. </span><br style="font-weight: bold;">

The good: Quinton Culberson (Rams), Omarr Conner (better receiver than QB), Quentin Groves
(Jaguars), Trumaine McBride (Bears), Will Arnold, Dezmond Sherrod
(Steelers), Jeremy Young, Daryl Harris (Chiefs), Eric Butler (Rams),
Jeremy Garrett and Kareem Moore (bust at Ole Miss, but playing with the
Redskins). Mico McSwain has a world of talent, but could never get his
**** together. Tim Bailey would be a good one years later. That's 13 players that could be considered good,
7 that made the pro ranks.</span><br style="font-weight: bold;">

<span style="font-weight: bold;">The busts: Devrick Hampton, Donovan
Davis, Marcus Cohen (Daryl Harris was just part of a package with Cohen
as the headliner and McBride viewed as just a decent player. Nothing
was expected of Harris), Sean Merrill, Corey Clark, Marquis McBeath,and
the rest were either busts or just not good to begin with. </span>
