Is calling us a "Cinderella Team" insulting?

A friend of mine is furious and insulted because he heard some sports talking head call us a "Cinderella team." He figures it implies were aren't really that good, just lucky. It doesn't bother me-- with the Regional/CWS format it takes some luck to get to the championship game no matter who you are (ask Vandy). We got hot when it mattered, so what? Some good teams slumped at the wrong time. So what? Do y'all think "Cinderella Team" is an insult? I don't get it.

It doesn't offend me, I think its more of a case of the pundit/talking head not being totally informed. If I remember correctly we were ranked inside the top 10 in several preseason polls, additionally, I do not believe we fell out of the top 17/18 or so in rankings the entire year. If your buddy wants to be offended though, let him.

Does Rea or Holder look anything like Cinderella? I bet whoever said that doesn't have the balls to call either of them Cinderella. More like Scar on the Lion King.

I'd be insulted. It's not like you're a school from some scrub conference. You were the underdog, sure, but you're a team from one of the two best conferences, if not the best conference for the sport.

I don't see it as an insult but I am sick and tired of hearing about Rea's size instead of his ability by the commentators. They should be talking more about what a damn fine first baseman he is and how well he has swung it lately.

I mean, we get it, Rea is a big guy. I heard them the first 500 times they said it.

We are equivalent to a 4 seed playing in the final four at this point

I don't consider that Cinderella.

2007 team was cinderella.
2008 Fresno St.
Stony Brook last yr.
Etc....

No regional host is ever a "cinderella" -- unless people think a 4-seed in the NCAA basketball tournament qualifies.

I thought it was more like a 3 seed. We faced off against the #6 national seed (equivalent to a 2 seed) in the Supers (Sweet 16). When a 3 seed makes it, it's not a huge deal.

did you know he was a highly-recruited football player coming out of HS?! **

if i've heard that once, its been a 1000 times since our regional.

I don't think so. Compared to the rankings of some of the national seeds that have fallen either in regionals, supers, or Omaha (see Walking Corn Dogs, FSU, K State, Vandy, Cal St Fullerton, etc), we are Cinderellas, nobody expected us @ "The Ball".

I think they've been very complimentary of Rea's ability. It's natural that they're going to talk about his size. You just don't see 275-lb 1st basemen who can field the position like he can. We're used to it because we've been seeing him for 2 years, but it's new to the announcers (and most of the audience).

I wouldn't call us that, but what if you only knew this:

There is a team that finished third in their conference division, and who was the 5th seed in their own conference tournament where they were skull-drug by a team that didn't win a game after regional play. That team won what many considered the toughest regional, then went 2-0 at the #6 overall seed at the Super Regionals, followed by wins over the #3 overall seed, and the B1G conference champion. They are one game away from playing for the National Championship, and they already have a tournament victory over their next opponent.

Yes, one might reasonably call that team a Cinderella.

i'd say cinderella in this case is being used more along the lines of we are the darlings of the media/non-biased fans rather than a complete out of nowhere stony brook/fresno st type cinderella.

We would actually be a 3 seed ...all 3seeds advanced to elite 8 or omaha

only regional host teams made omaha
1)UNC2)OregonST4)LSU9)NCST10)MSU11)Indiana12)UCLA14)Louisville
There is no Cinderella in this years omaha, if you had to pick one and knew what the hell you were talking about it would be UCLA or Indiana

Unflattering Cinderella comparisons

I don't think this baseball team counts (sure, we expected a lot coming into the season, followed by the hot start, and could have won a few more conference series).
But here are a few insulting Cinderella comparisons:

I don't think it's offensive.

At the start of the season, just about everyone expected us to be in Omaha. However, I don't think they expected much more than that. We are only one win away from the NC series and I think that surprises a lot of people. We always knew we were good enough to get there. I think now, the fact that we are so close to participating in our FIRST national championship in one of the major three kind of does make us a cinderella team.

Not insulting, just shows ignorance.

We hosted a regional. Hosting a regional is a reflection of an overall solid season. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that 1 seed in a regional is a good baseball team that makes it deep into post-season play.

Talking heads are just lazy. No worries.

who cares?

it's as if many State fans just go around looking for things to get pissed about rather than enjoying this to the max and not giving a **** what irrelevant people say.

As a fan of the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals

No- it doesn't offend me at all.

Heck, I think it's great that we are getting attention.
