I have watched this defense all year and yes they seem to be very good at times. I am just worried that they are highly suspectable to the five yard out and run. Yes we blitz an awful lot and it does seem that the more the year goes on the more other teams understand that. I remember another defensive guru who coached at State who bliltzed a alot and left corners on an island eventually people caught on and burned them with quick five yard hitters. Yes ourD has played well and hasbeen a strong point.I am just making an observation. Agree or not?

Diaz is much more deceptive than JLD ever was. Many times it may look like we are in man coverage only to have someone dropping. With JLD it was man coverage all the way most of the time and as a result we gave up some huge plays. I think Diaz will only get better; Joe Lee was Joe Lee and was never going to change his ways.

I think one of our problems is we play a soft @ss zone and it kills us. I also have watched teams kill us with stretch plays and quick screens as you said above. I don't think Diaz is another JLD tho. This is our first year in this defensive system and for the most part it has been a success. I don't know why we stay in a 4-3 and rarely throw a nickel/dime package in when other teams have 5 WR sets.

Jonathon Banks is tall and lanky for a CB, but doesn't have much closing speed. Corey Broomfield is much smaller and quicker and can close on a short route, but can't hang in a jumpball situation. So, the opposition tries to run short, quick 5 yard routes on Banks while throwing fade routes to the receiver Broomfield is on.

The real test wil be Ark. I am betting with those big receivers it will present a nightmare coverage scheme. Petrino will be ready and I agree that soft zone will not be good against them. However I also see us scoring 40 or more against them.

Kentucky and Arkansas are not strong defensive teams so we should move the ball on them. Def more scared of Arkansas because of their passing game but Kentucky (Cobb) presents problems too. If we can pressure Mallett and force turnovers (he doesn't do well under pressure) we should be okay. Being a State fan isn't good for the heart

We had talent all over the field (esp. at corner) during much of JLD's time at MSU. Our current talent level on defense doesn't stack up to the raw talent we had in 1999 and 2000.

First of all, JLD had infinitely more talent.

Secondly, JLD's style was to play man coverage with his corners. That was his undoing when we didn't have the talent to do this. Diaz almost never plays man coverage. All of this "show man deception" isn't going to work if he continues to drop into zone every time. The flats are alway open on Banks' side, and the middle of the field is always, always open if we bring the LBs on the blitz. Like I posted last night, if we don't get to the QB, we will get gashed.

as long as he had lights out cover corners. His undoing was when he didn't have those corners he wouldn't change the scheme.
