Is it me or does the ESPN streaming app suck?

I've had Sling and most recently YouTubeTV and watching games on the ESPN app on my smart TV is a pain in the rear. You have to select games instead of just putting it on a certain channel (i.e., ESPN2, SECN, etc) and waiting for your game to come on later. The UI sucks. The options for quad box suck. I understand you have jump out of the app to watch Fox or CBS games, because duh it's the ESPN app, but it's annoying as hell. I'm giving it another week or so, but I may go back to YTTV just to make Saturdays more enjoyable for me.

I could joke that we went back in time to 2015, 2020, or 2023.

Its always been less than impressive.

If you scroll down a few rows on the app it lets you select a specific channel. I used the app and put it on ESPN2 before our game started Saturday. But yeah agreed UI could still use some tweaking

Can you toggle between games? (to another game in progress)

Signed up for ESPN unlimited. Looks like you get better streaming with it

I hated it for several years but got ESPN unlimited just before football season and have generally found it to be fine. YouTubeTV’s interface is probably still better but it’s not worth the difference in cost to me. Your mileage may vary.

I couldn’t even sign up for it. Tried on Saturday just to give it a spin. The official site link asked me to log in with my MyDisney ID to set up the subscription. When I did that, it said I “already had a subscription”, and referred me to my Disney + / Hulu / ESPN + bundle which I have through Verizon for $21.99 per month. I found out pretty quickly that ESPN+ was NOT the new streaming app. There was no link available for me to simply add the ESPN Unlimited for $29.99 / mo to the existing package.

Evidently, I would have had to create a totally new MyDisney log in, with a new email address, and set it up from scratch. I’m totally not doing that crap. Roll out of it has been a complete joke. I’ll use my existing ESPN+ to watch the next 2 games as necessary, then I suppose I’ll Sling day pass for a few others. 17 that new app.

It’s been sucking for longer than the DWS sound system…well, maybe not.

I don't think so, do it on a computer, not the tv or phone. I had a Hulu only account and it told me to inactivate my Hulu account then sign up for the ESPN Unlimited, Hulu, Disney+ account. It worked perfect except, the ESPN app does still suck.

I did try to do it on my computer….didn’t work. And even if it did, that’s a horrendous platform if you can’t even sign up for it on your TV or phone.

It did offer a bundle of $29.99 / month, for only 12 months, for Disney and Hulu with ads, and the new ESPN app. My current Disney package with Verizon is the premium one…$21.99 for Disney / Hulu / ESPN+, with no ads on the Disney and Hulu. 2 of my 3 kids are 6 and under….and watch way more Disney than anything else. Disney+ with ads is therefore a complete non-starter for me….I have no interest at all in that shít. Definitely not replacing my current bundle for that one.

They should simply offer the standalone service if you don’t already have ESPN unlimited through another provider or bundle. I don’t already have it, yet they wouldn’t let me add it on. It was unbelievable. I’m sitting there trying to give them my money, and they don’t even have a way to take it. Pathetic marketing and customer interface.

All I had was Hulu to begin with and no YouTube TV, no streaming packages, no Disney, no ESPN. I went to Hulu.com and cancelled it. At that point I had nothing but an old empty Hulu account. Then, on the same page I signed up for the triple package, ESPN Unlimited Hulu and Disney, using the same log in and account that I had with the stand alone Hulu. Done, finished. I couldn't find a way to do that with my phone though. It's always easier to do on laptop to me, or maybe on my tablet. I'm going to cancel after football season anyway so a few extra bucks for this pkg didn't bother me

I've had no trouble. I just find the game I'm watching and leave it on there, so maybe I'm not expecting as much as you are.

Yeah, it took me an hour to sign up because I had to navigate through the different log-ins...I think I had to find my old Disney account and change the email and credit card info before signing back in with ESPN.

I learned my lesson a couple years ago and a signed up the Tuesday before the USM game, instead of a 10:45 for an 11:00 kickoff.

Sounds like you have a very different situation than me.

I have a Disney+ / Hulu / ESPN+ bundle through Verizon. It’s a premium bundle (no ads) that I do not wish to give up. The least important part of the bundle to me is ESPN+, but I’m stuck with it.

I wanted to add ESPN Unlimited as a standalone subscription for the advertised price if $29.99/mo, not bundled with anything. Already have a MyDisney account, and do not have ESPN Unlimited, so this should be straightforward to simply add the access under the same log-in.

But evidently, there’s no option to do so. I’d have to apparently do one of 3 things:

1) Cancel the current bundle I have through Verizon. Add ESPN Unlimited. Hope that I can re-add the Verizon bundle after at the same price. I’m not doing this because I see it likely just creating the same problem in reverse. If that doesn’t happen, I’d worry about a price increase from my current bill amount when I opt back in. Even if neither of those things happens, I’m not going through the hassle of dealing with Verizon, Disney, and ESPN just to add a single 17ing streaming service when I can do this seamlessly with any other service using a single button press on my TV remote.

2) Create a totally new MyDisney account - under a throwaway email account. Sign up for ESPN Unlimited under this account. In other words, have 2 different Disney accounts, and a whole different email I have to check for 2-factor authentication for the 5,000 times I have to re-login to my own damn living room TV to prove its still me. No chance in hell.

3) Cancel my ad-free Disney+ and Hulu. Swap it for version with ads and ESPN Unlimited instead of ESPN+, for cost increase of $8 per month for 12 months and way 17ing more than that starting in Month #13. Add numerous additional 4 year old and 6 year old meltdowns to my current monthly bundle there, for all the added Disney+ commercials. Lose the flexibility to cancel ESPN Unlimited individually when it totally sucks in all the ways I think its probably going to suck. Again, no chance in hell.

It’s a damn joke that it can’t be added as a standalone for the likely millions of customers that have the current Disney bundle with the largest wireless carrier in the country. It’s also a joke that they haven’t worked with said carrier to establish a new bundle with ESPN Unlimited. Its simply hard to imagine that this rollout could have been done any more poorly than it has.

PH... blame the greed between Verizon and Disney/ESPN for that. Publicly traded companies... You are not the customer my friend. You need to have Verizon FIOS to get what you are wanting. My advice is to cancel your bundle and sign up (you have to use a new email address) and get ESPN Unlimited with the Hulu/Disney/ESPN bundle. I know it is insane, and yes it is. Time to call Jackie Childs.

I don't, but I have in the past. I cut the cord a long time ago, but I pick up a streaming service every fall for college football and drop it after the CFP. I haven't watched live broadcast TV (besides sports) in like 5 or 6 years.

Mine works better this season than last. Last season it was always behind, have to hit the forward arrow to catch the game up or shut down app & bring back up to get in real time. Doesn’t appear I’m having that problem this season yet. selecting games is a pain. I got to where I just run to the search bar type in who I want to watch real fast & pull it up that a way, else you be scrolling for 15 minutes to find the game you want.

I’m bumping this thread to say I fúcking hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. It is the dumbest ******* least intuitive piece of UI garbage on the face of the planet. Either keep me logged in more than a fúcking week or make the login more seamless. Hulu isn’t like this. Disney+ isn’t like this. What garbage engineers did you hire to build this shít? Did the same people that decided to keep Jemelle and Stephen A evaluate the tech talent? Holy shìt pass the Tylenol.

ESPN app is dead solid and reliable on my Roku, at least for the last 6 years. In the 2010s, it would buffer like a bastard.

The recent change to the app that I dislike is that it fast forwards and rewinds exponentially faster than before. And skip forward or replay used to be 10 seconds, but it's now 30 seconds.
That much time skip means plays are missed and you can't jump a little at a time.
