Is it too early to say I feel sorry for Croom?

He is unquestionably a good man. He is a good leader, a man of character and all those important traits that are belittled here. He was a great ambasador for the university, He's just not a good football coach. I REALLY wanted him to be successful, and not just for obvious fan reasons. He tried. He failed.

Maybe I shouldn't feel too sorry for him. He ought to be set financially. But really, I wish him well.

He tried to do a job that he was unilaterally unqualified for. Hell, I'd love to be a rockstar, but I don't see anyone crying about me failing at it.

Kind of hard to feel sorry for someone who made millions off of his termination

I agree Flab....I feel sorry for him only because he was clearly in over his head, and continued to give it his best shot. I think the vast majority of MSU fans wanted to see him succeed, just didn't happen and I hate it for him and for us.

...He is set for life for putting five seasons of losing football on the field. Yeah, I think he's a good man, but being a good man never won a damn football game.

his dream of being a Bear Bryant-like figure is gone. He probably never dreamed he would be anything other than a successful HC. It's sad, really.

As a State fan I'm thrilled today.

I get all carried away about this "great character" mofo. Let`s get the whole story and then see how great this guy is/was.

I appreciate his effort and what he stands for. But being a great leader and man of character didn't make him a good football coach. I hate that it didn't turn out better.

I wish him well.

The $3.5 was the employer penalty if Croom was fired. This is not a buy-out situation. Of course, Byrne might have given him a separate severance package for is dedication to State.

If Croom really did walk away with no buyout option whatsoever, then I will tip my hat to him. I'm betting that this is not the case though. He may not get $3.5 mil, but I bet that he and Byrne said that they'd discuss the "details" later.

This is one of those situations where it just doesn't feel good either way. He's a good and honorable man. I think this was the right decision for MSU, but I'm not one of those who is jumping up and down and dancing about it. A good man and his good family are having one hell of a terrible Thanksgiving weekend, and I wouldn't celebrate that happening to anybody.

It is my wish that he lands in a good situation and redeems himself Cutcliffe-style. I will be rooting for him to do so.</p>

If you don't think he got a settlement, then I have some swamp land I'll sell you at a cheap price. It will be structured settlement over a few years. Thank ole LT for screwing MSU one more time.

but I don't feel sorry for him. He was given an opportunity he was not qualified for. He did it to the best of his ability, but he didn't have the goods. Hopefully for him, he'll land as an assistant coach somewhere in the NFL, which I think is more suited for him. He is a good man, but not a head football coach at this level. Unfortunately, we set our program back 5 years to discover this.

Not everyone is capable of being at the top of their profession. That's the way things go.
