Is it true some incoming freshmen are getting emails…

That's because for some reason braindead liberals want everybody to live on top of each other and walk everywhere. If it were up to some of them we would all live in tiny cracker box apartments with thousands of other people and never go more than a three block radius from home. Meanwhile these same people have private jets.
Walk-able urban density and a private jet? How dare you threaten me with a good time.

All these damn walkable cities that people want to visit! Give me back my strip malls and traffic!!***

This is what my kid told me the other day. BIG CAVEAT- he's 18 and not the best historian, so take it with a salt lick.

I can attest to the latter part of this. I have a 17 year old HS Senior step-son who tells his stories or relays information in the most confusing way possible. I have to follow up with a series of questions, often interrupting him in the middle, just to make any sense of the order of events and the who, what, where, when, why, and how.

I need to remember to ask my folks if I was as discombobulated.

Our daughter is a junior at State now and I never heard about any issues, although I stay out of it all as well unless there's a problem. My first thought when reading this was stop requiring freshmen to live in dorms.
Our problem is we have plenty of land to build new dorms so we want to monetize it. Not sure how we fell behind in the building, or if we are just afraid of over building, but several schools ONLY allow you to live on campus if you are a freshman.

Same here for me in '71 in Critz. Fortunately, it was limited and was temporary until a new dorm opened in a couple of weeks. State has always had trouble with allocating dorm rooms for the fall semester because of supply and demand and the fluid nature of housing. If they overbuild, dorms may sit empty and people complain about monetary waste, underbuild and people complain. No win situation.
My time with 2 roommates in Critz was the entire freshman year. I was a co-op student after the first year, so housing was interesting, but I believe I was in McKee for a while, then Hamlin one summer when the AC wasn't working, and the final couple of years in Suttle (new and relatively luxurious at the time). Not many students lived off campus at the time.

Seems like we had the no off campus freshmen rule back in '71 but that didn't stop me from moving out of the beautiful and naturally air conditioned Critz my second semester and never looking back to campus living for the next 3 years.

My favorite part is referencing his friends by first name only, then being stunned that I don't know who they are. Even if said friends were acquired in the last 30 days.

I'm 100% certain I did this to my folks.

Anybody know what the % of freshmen to total population living on campus is? I remember we couldn’t wait to get off campus back in my day. First thought I had when I saw these new dorms that started popping up was I would have stayed on campus if these had been around back then.
It’s mandatory for freshman.

I did find out today that my kid's friend (the freshman woman) was offered off-campus housing after her parents called and raised enough hell to make that happen. They were told they were going to have a 3rd roommate in the last few weeks.

I agree that this should not be happening at a major university where they have enough information to gameplan for these scenarios far in advance. It's a black eye on the school, and we don't need more own-goals.

Its literally just unqualified people in this case. Nothing malicious. So nothing will be done.

Had a conversation this morning with my rising-senior daughter, with her telling us that the homecoming dance is a month earlier than normal and she needed to get shopping for dresses asap. My wife was skeptical, looked into it, and sure enough, wrong date. Off by exactly a month.
Turns out she got the date from a certain friend who is known for giving bad info.

We have a standing policy with my children of "all your friends are morons with some exceptions", with a very short exception list. I'll be reminding them of that soon.

It may just be laziness and incompetence. How many more 17 ups have to occur before everyone admits Keenum can't hire good personnel at any level?
This is going to offend some of you..... but largely people working in academia at any level are not the best at handling real world situations. I am always amazed at what they think "busy" looks like and am constantly left thinking "you wouldn't last 6 months in a corporate environment."

Not defending it -
But, I think a lot of people on here would be surprised how often this happens at universities and colleges. There is a ton of housing flux from year to year. In many instances it ends up being temporary because enrolled kids don't show up, drop out after a few days/weeks, etc.

As one of the "braindead liberals" on campus, I can assure you the parking and housing issues weren't part of our agenda. Just like the "MSU Parents" Facebook group, there is a private "MSU Faculty and Staff" Facebook group. Some of the most liberal of us were the first to complain on there. Remember, the faculty and staff pay to park as well.

Pictures inside the new Azalea hall look nice, but the dorm is only single bedrooms with communal bathrooms, which makes absolutely zero sense to me.

So instead of building a practical dorm to help with the on-campus housing problem, they built a dorm that can only handle one person to a room. Very inefficient and does almost nothing to help the housing problem.

Don't worry. You can get your money back and then some when you sell your football tickets to opposing fans this fall.

One of my two roommates the first semester didn't show back up for school the second semester. I don't know if he got kicked out or what happened, but I know he never studied or went to class.

Isn't that the way it's done on most campuses these days? That one looks a little depressing though. I think I'd rather share a room than be in something the size of a ship's stateroom.

My son went thru 2 room mates during band camp his freshman year - both dropping out - and the 3rd assignment when classes started never showed. Ended up with a private room for a semester. You just never know with kids.

I can verify the emails and 3-person dorm rooms are legit. However, it’s supposed to be temporary. I think the new Azalea dorm was supposed to be finished by the time school started but they didn’t make it.

So in this thread I’ve read that we have plenty of land so we are monetizing that by building more dorms (suggesting we have more dorms than other places).

I’ve also read in this thread that our leadership is terrible and let us get BEHIND on housing.

It can’t be both so which is it?

Different options. This is a concept that wasn’t at State but other peer universities had been adopting. If someone wants the traditional roomate in one room, they have that option too, with a private bathroom and with community bathrooms.

Ruby Hall opened 20 years ago, and this will be the 10th residence hall opened at State in the 20 years since (including Ruby). That does not include College View, which is specifically designed for upperclassmen
