Is it Urban Meyer? I hope so.

A book could be written about all the ways from Sunday that Nebraska has torpedoed their own program since they fired Frank Solich. Everything they did was a superb lesson in how not to hire a head coach. I think "the return of the great homegrown Scott Frost" which resulted in the inevitable disaster was their realization that they have too many headwinds to overcome and needed a complete rebuild. At this point, Rhule is their ceiling - and give them a few good years, and they'll can Rhule as well for not getting them to the playoffs.

Nebraska could hire a better coach than Rhule - but I doubt they'd perform any better. Where's "Dr." Tom when they need him?

What’s Bill Callahan doing these days?

😞

not to make it political but since this board leans conservative (Not targeting you CV, or anyone in particular) i find it interesting that presumably some here voted for Trump and are having issues with Urban’s character. hold the football program to a higher standard than the presidency is a choice.
Well, like Trump, if the other options are horrible, then you take Meyer.

Ohio State announced today that Urban Meyer will serve as the pregame Victory Bell ringer for Saturday’s game against Penn State. Meyer expressed gratitude for the honor. It's part of the pregame activities at The Shoe.

He is in year three and the team is not very good at all. They also have one of the worst OL‘s in the Conference and not developing their 5 star QB. He is a highly overrated coach and I would never want him here at PSU. We could do better.
Ruhle isn't my pick either but he's a PSU guy and he's night and day better than Frost. I think the situation at Nebraska is different than at PSU.

I expect to beat Ohio State sometimes. Not every year, but sometimes. 1/3 of the time? 1/4? Yeah.

Joe also beat Ohio State when they were really good at times too. Ohio State, great program, but has exactly 1 unbeaten season since 2002. Michigan has 4 in a row on them. Not unrea
If Meyer says yes he's getting the job. It will be viewed as and reported as a home run hire.

If he says no and PSU beats OSU and/or IN then
Smith gets the job.

If not then Ruhle probably gets the job. I think that's the most likely scenario. Not my choice but a predicti

Rhule's career record is 65-58.

This is his 10th year coaching (coaching college, that is ... he was a complete disaster in the pros), and he has 6 seasons above .500 (including this one) ... and 2 of those were 7-6. He was 1-5 against top-25 ranked squads with Temple (the 1 win coming against an East Carolina squad that wasn't close to being ranked thereafter). He was 0-8 against top-25 ranked squads with Baylor, including 0-3 in his "good" season that got him the job with the Panthers. He's 0-7 against top-25 ranked squads with Nebraska. So, he's 1-20 against teams ranked in the top 25 when he played them, with his lone win coming against some pretender G5 squad that ended up with 5 losses on the season, and was ranked 21 when they played them.

Folks have tried to make him seem better by claiming he turned programs around, but he really just brought them back to close to where they were very recently in 2 of those 3 stops, and his coaching years actually represented a nadir (before the rebound) for those squads.
If PSU hires Ruhle Big Noon and College Gameday will have those stats plastered on the the screen in every big game PSU plays just like Franklin. What is the definition of insanity?

I've posted this before, and I'll keep saying it...

If Franklin resigned after the NW game, I'd be happy if Kraft announced Matt Rhule as Penn State football coach.

But you do not fire Franklin, tank the recruiting class and blow $50 million for Matt Rhule.

Meh.

1) The “recruits” who decommitted weren’t ever really committed to PSU as a place or a program.

2) If Krafty Kraft hires a good coach, the roster is easily fixable with late flips and the portal.

Am I understanding Franklin’s contract correctly that once he gets hired and gets a salary equal to or more than he was making at Penn State it won’t cost Penn State any more money?

Good points

Honestly, even in the extreme - if PSU loses the entire class - in today's college football it is not a huge deal. It is NOT like the days of 85 scholarships and nearly impossible transfer regulations - when you HAD TO build a roster slowly and develop high school players into game-ready squads.

Being honest - just look at the 2025 recruiting class - how many of those kids are making meaningful contributions? That it would have impacted the squad's competitiveness if they were not there? [SPOILER: None] Of the 2024 class, how many were meaningful contributors in 2024? [SPOLIER: None]

So - even if you "lose" an entire class - you can just go heavy into the portal the next year, and grab 25 kids who were "recruits" the previous year or two, and add them to the roster. In actuality, those kids are easier to get into meaningful roles: they are experienced, at least a little bit, wrt college football and you have a better idea which ones of them can help you (and at which positions you need help) than when they were HS kids.

And with 105 scholarships - up from 85 - there is plenty of room to even "take a shot" with a kid you feel a little less certain about their "floor", and can gamble a bit on high upside.

No reason, in today's game, for a solid coach/staff to not be able to field a solid two deep - even in a year after "losing" a recruiting class of HS kids.

I saw Urban Meyer saying that PSU probably had their new coach already lined up when the fired Franklin but it seems like he was wrong. I don't understand the timing of what PSU did. They could have had some behind the scenes discussions with preferred candidates then let Franklin go after the regular season. Then announce the new guy within a couple of weeks so he could reassure existing players and recruits before hitting the portal asap. As is we lost all of our 2027 class, some of our 2026 class, and we'll probably see existing players looking at the portal as soon as the season ends. The cupboard will be bare if we wait for an existing coach in mid January.

Guys, I get that rebuilding the roster is far easier these days, but, it's a binary solution set: try to keep the class together, or wreck the class. If you're telling me its equal or better to wreck the class, I would argue then why have a recruiting class at all? Just use the portal and screw recruiting.

Heck...I think i just came up with the new model for the big boys: don't recruit at all. Let the Rutgres, Purdues and Mississippi States of the world spend all that time and money, then when you see they've scored a good one, just offer them more NIL money and poach them.

My point still stands: firing Franklin mid-season has decimated recruiting. You better darn well make it worth it with a home run hire.

Only time will tell.

I don't think Kraft is stupid. He simply has to understand that firing Franklin mid season was pointing at the fence a la Babe Ruth.

Now, whether he had a plan, or is capable of delivering....we shall see.
I would like to think Kraft is not stupid - but he is a professional educator with a doctorate. ;)

From the scuttlebutt about Franklin going over Kraft's head for a further extension, etc. - seems to me that that relationship went off the rails and that Kraft made the decision that barring a championship season, Franklin was gone. Franklin "checking out" forced Kraft's hand, I think - I don't think Kraft expected it all to go south as quickly as it did.

I'd like to think that Kraft had a plan in mind (and started contacting candidates) when he made the decision to hit the eject button on Franklin if the season wasn't a championship one...but that "plan" might have just been, "I'll call muh best buddy Matt Rhule, he'll come back to his alma mater."

I don't know either whether Kraft can deliver - but I do believe this is the biggest, most important decision of his career. I suspect he'll lay an egg - he can prove me wrong.

They may have been able to wait another week or so, but there's no way they could have let him coach another home game. The Northwestern game was about as close to torches and pitchforks that I've ever seen.
Exactly. Crazy that people are missing the point that PSU/Kraft did Franklin a favor by firing him when they did

It just blows up the class earlier...either way, changing coaches will mean that everyone is back on the market again and the new guy needs to recruit them (plus, we don't know which guys that we're recruiting today will also be players that the new guy wants to bring on board).

Are we sure that's accurate. There have been no big rumors around that anyone is pursuing him. I'm sure his agent has floated him in front of everybody looking for a HC but with so many schools in the market there has been no real news on him. I'm not all that sure he will be all that hotly pursued but it is way early to really know either way. IMO Franklin is a bit of a known commodity. Maybe he will switch places with the Vandy coach they loved him at Vanderbilt.

I’m not saying that the reason Kraft fired him was to do him a favor. just that as a by product of the firing , Franklin got off from having to endure the embarrassment of his coaching this season and the ire of the fans that’s comes with that

Urban or Gruden. I want it to be fun (including pressers) - enjoyable - entertaining - exciting.

So scratch Urban (though I'd take him in a heartbeat)
I see you wouldn’t want a young Joe Gibbs either. (Very inarticulate pressers, a million “You knows.”)

To point 1, very few kids are "committed" these days. Almost pure free agency.

Most of the recruits are committed to the coach not the school so it doesn't matter when it happens. When you get rid of a coach, it's inevitable that all of the recruiting class is essentially gone. They can leave after the season ends too.
