Is it Urban Meyer? I hope so.

Our win over them in ‘05 was great, no doubt. As was ‘94 and ‘08. Yes, Joe was able to beat them a bit more.

But let’s not forget other Paterno-era games:
L 24-6
L 38-7
L 28-9
L 45-6
L 28-6
L 37-17
L 24-7
L 38-14

And it’s a fact that OSU was better in the Franklin era than in the Paterno era.
OSU Final AP rank in Franklin’s 11 years:
Top 10: 11/11
Top 5: 8/11

OSU final AP rank in Paterno’s 18 years (‘93-‘10):
Top 10: 11/18
Top 5: 9/18
100% truth in this.

I can recall those games, noncompetitive. I will say this, JF kept them closer a lot more often than Joe.

Don't know how old you are, but we used to have absolute knock down drag outs on the PennLive boards (this was really pre Rivals). The topic was always over Joe's fitness as a coach, and these began in like 2000. Still can't believe it was 11(!) years later that he finally left.

At the same time, while Ohio State is better now, it wasn't better every year. Remember, Ohio State did win a title in 2002, was tremendous in 03-2005, played for them in 06 and 07.

But all that said, Ohio State has been unbeaten once in 23 years, and ironically they couldn't play for a title. They are not unbeatable death stars, and just as one would expect that Auburn beats Alabama once every few years (I can remember Auburn having a several years long win streak in that series), and UCLA beat USC once every few years, Penn State should beat Ohio State once every few years minimum.

Those were the standards with Joe and anyone else, and Joe certainly had his job being called for him from 2000-04.

Like I said, I’ll support him if he gets the job. I supported Franklin up until the UCLA game.
Yes, but Franklin was good, so you would have had to have been certifiably insane to not support him. Supporting a woefully mediocre replacement (like Rhule would be) takes a lot more faith and "see no evil" fandom.

Franklin was horrible this year. Inexcusably bad, so he deserved to be fired and not be supported. I will support Rhule if he comes in until he shows me he doesn’t deserve it. You choose your own path though. I’m not going to tell you how to be a fan.

Rhule's career record is 65-58.

This is his 10th year coaching (coaching college, that is ... he was a complete disaster in the pros), and he has 6 seasons above .500 (including this one) ... and 2 of those were 7-6. He was 1-5 against top-25 ranked squads with Temple (the 1 win coming against an East Carolina squad that wasn't close to being ranked thereafter). He was 0-8 against top-25 ranked squads with Baylor, including 0-3 in his "good" season that got him the job with the Panthers. He's 0-7 against top-25 ranked squads with Nebraska. So, he's 1-20 against teams ranked in the top 25 when he played them, with his lone win coming against some pretender G5 squad that ended up with 5 losses on the season, and was ranked 21 when they played them.

Folks have tried to make him seem better by claiming he turned programs around, but he really just brought them back to close to where they were very recently in 2 of those 3 stops, and his coaching years actually represented a nadir (before the rebound) for those squads.
He’d be an awful hire.
I’d support him until he started losing a lot, but he’d be an awful hire.

Rhule would have to be certifiable bonkers to take the PSU job. The expectations coupled with the decade long frustration of not winning the "big games" will make his life miserable sooner than later.

Meyer is not going to be the next coach of Penn State. Like Saban, he loathes NIL and has spoken out against it as ruining the game. He has been a long-time friend of McMormick. That he was seen having lunch with him is meaningless in terms of anything having to do with the PSU opening.
Agree somewhat and if it is Meyer, you just have to wonder how long it takes him to self-destruct. Just don't think Saban or Meyer is cut out for today's new CF

This is why we're here now. Anyone chosen will likely at least be able to win a conference game. Franklin was not winning anymore games at all until next year's scrimmages. The entire Penn State team, fans, stadium, everything collapsed on Franklin in an instant. Penn State had to have someone else, anyone else, immediately.

What about Chad Powers? He would be a good coach.
Heck, why not Austin Powers?

Ohio State announced today that Urban Meyer will serve as the pregame Victory Bell ringer for Saturday’s game against Penn State. Meyer expressed gratitude for the honor. It's part of the pregame activities at The Shoe.

"I thank Ohio State for giving me this honor...and look forward to seeing many of you at Beaver Stadium in 2028 when I'm coaching Penn State...thank you!"
