Is Shadeur Sanders the modern day Time Tebow?

Seems there is no way for him to get a fair shot. He is obviously not talented enough to shine over the headache. Everyone has already made up their mind about him so it doesn't really matter what he does or doesn't do. He wrecks your QB room just by being in it because the noise is just too much.

All he has to do is show up and compete and work hard. If he's good enough, he'll play. If he isn't, he won't.

The problem is he can't show up and shut up.

Tebow got to the NFL because he was a hell of a college football player that won the Heisman and led his team to a NC. Sanders is there because of who is dad is.
Partially.

I don't think he should have ever been considered a first round draft pick, but i would consider his talent/potential a value where he was drafted. Now can you get him to shut up and just show up and work hard and be a good teammate? Maybe. Maybe not.

No… for a couple of reasons…

No teams came out and said Tebow bombed his team interviews. By all accounts, Tebow had the mentality to be a pro quarterback, but lacked some of the physical tools. Sanders is the opposite.

Tebow wasn’t assumed to be a first round pick. The Broncos picking him in the first was the surprise of that draft.

Tebow’s career was really derailed by the Broncos signing Peyton Manning. Tebow actually had a decent second year in Denver and won a playoff game against Pittsburgh. When he got to the Jets, the Jets thought they had a career guy in Mark Sanchez, butt fumble notwithstanding, so he never really got a shot.

Also, tough to say Shadeur hasn’t been given a shot when we haven’t even had the first snap of the NFL season yet.

Tebow was selected in the first round when he was in no way a first round pick. He was given a chance and didn’t make it.

sanders was selected in the much later rounds and is currently qb # 3 . Of the two, I would say sanders is the one who didn’t benefit from his last name and is being treated appropriately

Sanders does have an extremely accurate arm. Let's not act like he is void of talent and only got drafted because of his name.

So why wasn't he drafted higher and not making the two deep at a place that did not have a QB going into the season?

He is terribly flawed. He appeared to be less than focused in the draft interviews. He holds ball too long taking sacks. Many think he was focused on his stats over team needs. 75% completion rate is great but they would have won more games if he had thrown some away and had a lower completion rate.

The ball has to come out quicker, especially at a place like the Browns who have the 22nd best OL in the NFL. No way they can play a guy that holds the ball that long.

Considering all that, my question becomes, "How did he warrant being kept on the roster?"

He does possess a lot of talent, they at least think he has a chance to be good or they would not have kept him on the roster. Plus, he is cheap for a potential backup QB with upside as a possible starter someday. Add in Pickett nor Gabriel have proven to be the best either. Pickett hurt and traded now.

Browns are proving that if you got 4 QBs, you don't have one. Flacco, may still be good but he 40.

Time Tebow sounds like a Jean Claud Van Damme film. When the QB kneels to pray he's really traveling through time correcting some wrong, a la Dr. Sam Beckett. When he returns, merely seconds have transpired, and he arises with everyone unaware.

Decent second year? The guy had a 46% completion percentage and 1:2 TD to Int ratio. Also, his team only averaged 17 points. If it wasnt for his defense and kicker he would have been awful.

Tebow and Shadeur are essentially the same type of NFL player. Yes, Tebow had the better college career, but they are both late-round picks who have the talent to be NFL backups. Honestly, Shadeur likely has higher NFL chilling because he has an okay arm. The issue they both face is you cannot have your backup being more famous than the starter. Tebow had the Christian base issue and Shadeur has the media/fan cult issue. I remember Christians and even a few pastors from a pulpit claiming Tebow was not getting to play because of Christian persecution. The same applies to Sanders and the race card being used now.

Tim Tebow was never close to a good enough passer to be an NFL quarterback. He was a 48% career completion percentage. Shedeur Sanders has a LOT he needs to improve on, but he's at least got a good enough arm he could potentially be an NFL quarterback.

Yeah that Tebow phenomenon was bizarre how it all played out. He would do nothing for 3 quarters while his defense kept him in the game and then make a big play or two late to get all the credit. His passing numbers were a disaster but they won a bunch of these close games where, to his credit, he made some plays in the clutch.

Shedeur has better pro-style measurables than Tebow does in my opinion so he might have more longetivity if he can find the right spot.

The one thing that always wished occurred with Tebow is I wanted to see him actually fail in the NFL. He was a worse than average passer (I'm being nice) but he won. He was over .500 as a starter. He won a division title and a playoff game but never got another shot in a real game after that 1 season.

Fun fact: I hate Tim Tebow. I hated him in college and was so happy to see him fail in the NFL. I am a Christian and active in my church, but it always pissed me off when people worshipped him because he put John 3:16 on his eye black. Jonathan Banks will always have a special place in my heart for that pick-six!

I don't think any NFL owner or GM would bench a guy because of his off the field religious beliefs. All they want to do is win which translated means make a lot more money than they already have. They didn't get the money they have making stupid calls like that. I don't see anyone with the egos that most of them have saying 'don't play him because he's a Christian fanatic, play the number 2 that's not as good and isn't a Bible thumper'

As for race, how can anyone blame race on Sanders issues when every season the league is made up of ~70% AA players? His only issue is he (and his dad) are a couple of big mouth blowhards that overvalue their name and depend on the volume of their voice more than Shadeur's talent on the field for him to play. I'm not looking it up but guessing there were several AA QBs drafted this season higher than Shadeur

He had a 2:1 TD to INT ratio that season. Unless my math is wrong, the Broncos averaged 19 points/game in the games he played in that season, though that’s not a big difference. You’re right about the low completion percentage though. The big thing I remembered about that season was that the Broncos started winning once they went from Orton to Tebow.

I got my numbers flipped, but 2:1 is not good.

This is what I was asking about. I am not asking about his football ability. I am referring to his fame and the fandom he has that gets in his way and the team's way. Like Tebow, he is never going to get a "normal" chance because the fandom love and hate that causes over reaction no matter what happens.

Any NFL scout and NFL QB coach will tell you, Sanders is a "maybe" based on film alone. He is not where he needs to be, but with a year or two, he might be. Long long way to go. And a big maybe, but the media circus and unjustified arrogance is toxic for the team. They will remind him how much a rookie nobody he is and he has to work his way up from there. What he needs is a mentor better than his father. Deion did it the way he thought was best, but he did not have a life coach/mentor in the NFL (maybe because of his own choosing), and is just now getting that as a head coach from other head coaches. Moss needed Chris Carter, look at the results. Moss is a man's man now. Sanders needs the same badly.

I don’t want to get too off topic here, because I’m not trying to make the case that Tebow was going to be a great quarterback, but he could have been a decent backup.

A 2:1 TD to INT ratio is a decent number for a first time starter.

By comparison, first time starters:
Brett Favre - 3:2
Peyton Manning - 1:1
Tom Brady - 3:2

Even if you go by second seasons:
Brett Favre - 3:4
Peyton Manning - 5:3
Tom Brady - 2:1

Now, those guys all threw it a LOT more, but just looking at TD to INT ratio, 2:1 is not a bad number.

Sanders will develop in time if he will learn to play within a system and read defenses. Heis way overhyped. Not a great college QB period. I think Tebow could have developed over time also. He needed to work on his mechanics. Can't be a hero in the NFL

I agree, but the issue with him is that the fans and media would have never let him be the backup. He was going to fail as a backup, not because of talent, but because of people wanting to interview him and not the starter.

Looking at throwing mechanics alone Sanders is way easier to fix. But everyone knows that no one gets fixed in Cleveland.

Tebow is beloved in his hometown area of Jacksonville - so much so that during his recruiting process they covered him almost daily on all 3 JAX news stations. When he was at UF JAX sports was all Tebow 24/7.

All you need to know about Tim Tebow as an NFL QB is that the Jacksonville Jaguars - his home town team - would not even give him a shot at QB.
The Jags had CHAD HENNE as QB1 in 2013, and went 4-12, and still chose him over giving Tebow as shot.

I'm not sure who would care about the backup being interviewed more than the starter? I think most players and coaches would rather not be interviewed, except for attention who-res like Shedeur. Teams can control who is interviewed by whomever they send out there too

The NFL seems to be very bad in having their QB skill set defined. The backup QBs seem to have a totally different skill set on many teams. Now some time it's that you can't have another Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes, but other times their second guy is not a similar type QB. If I decided to draft Tebow I would have also gotten Vince Young and and a Jalen Milroe type player and all my QBs would be big strong running type QBs and my offense would be designed for that skill set.

Also feels like Shedeurs completion percentage is high because most of his passes are 8 to 10 yards. Pretty sure anyone who has played QB in high school or above could have an extraordinary completion percentage at that distance.
