Is this the best team we've had in past 20 years?

Let him enjoy himself. We have had some lean times since the 2007 Pitt game. I'm enjoying this. But, I'm not buying in on his claim. We are good. But Maryland has no QB.

We look LOADED

Skyler Howard may go down as the best QB in WVU history.

Um? I must have missed something... guess the Pat White led teams from the Sugar & Fiesta Bowls and the Geno Smith led team in the Orange Bowl weren't? We're only into game three of this season outside of Big 12 play. I would say not yet...

The defense is unlike anything we have seen before.

I love Pat White, but Skyler is a much better passer.

This collection of young WR's is incredible. Magnificent recruiting.

We have yet to make a serious run in the Big 12. We beat OU and TCU and maybe run the table, then I might agree with you.

Pat White is STILL the only player to win all bowl games during his tenure at QB. He has paid his dues... Skylar has yet to do that. Not to knock the great job he is doing, but Chief is still one of the greatest QBs and players EVER to wear the Mountaineer uniform.

Not sure how good this team is, next week will give everyone a better idea. Most likely double digit underdogs in Norman next week. Been highly entertaining to date.

1996 defense? The 1996 defense was the top ranked defense if I recall. It had Gary Stills as a backup, who was a star the next year on defense. This year's defense is good, but to say it is unlike anything we have seen before is ridiculous. The 1988 defense was also pretty good. Rich Rod had a good defense here, but I still think the 1996 defense is the one I remember as being the best I have seen here.

How about let's waiting until the end of the season before discussing this? Won't this question look pretty stupid if we lose the next 9 games?

Giving up 23 points in 3 games, and only 1 TD against the starting defense, is impressive, no matter the opposition.
Skyler had 4 TD passes against Maryland, which is a middling Big 10 team, which isn't bad either.
Smallwood had 140 or so yards rushing, also good.
WVU had FIVE interceptions. This defense is very adept at going for the ball instead of waiting for the receiver to catch it and then tackling him.

I feel MUCH better about this team than I did before the season began. Obviously, the Oklahoma game will tell us if the defense is real or a mirage, and whether the offense can score readily on Big 12 teams.

And the October Octopus Onslaught of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor and TCU will tell us if this will be magical season or not.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the heck out of WVU football. Three blowouts in three games. Not much to complain about there.

Good lord, you are a idiot...

How do you know Howard won't be?

What if he led WVU to a national title and won? Or did it back to back ? Would he then be?

Anything is possible and you definitely don't know for sure that it won't happen.

Just because you were wrong about Howard doesn't mean everyone else is.

People....people.... people! Skyler had a great game against a not so decent team! No need to anoint him as the g.o.a.t or speak of him as if he's some scrub! Lets just freaking enjoy the victory and the accomplishments of Skyler and his teammates!

Three years ago after a few games one or more posters were on this board stating if Geno didn't win the Heisman it would be the biggest rip-off in the history of college football. We all know what happened after that. I'm certainly not meaning to denigrate Skyler, he has been magnificent. Let this thing play out and enjoy the ride. We should know much more about this team by next Saturday afternoon.

He's showing signs that there is a night and day difference between this season and that bowl debacle in December. But, it's one game at a time with his play ability improving for each one...

This is probably our best team of the DH era including the Orange Bowl team. Anything beyond that is going a little over the top.

October will be Ocotopus Month, when we'll all be smarter by November 1.
There's the October Octopus Onslaught of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor and TCU, with all but the Cowboys NOT in Mountaineer Field.
There's the WVU Octopus Defense, where there seem to be tenacles everywhere, intercepting 9 passes, recovering 2 fumbles, allowing 7.7 points per game (and only ONE touchdown against the starting defense).
It will be out Ocotopus Defense against their Octopus offenses & defenses.
I vote for the gold and blue Octopus!

Over the top is trying to evaluate a team that has beat the likes of GS, Liberty, and this years version of MD.

Sure, our team has done EVERYTHING to give us hope about their potential....but the best team in the last 20 years ?

It's a pathetic question at this point of the season... ....and the sad thing is some people are trying to give sincere answers.

Ok moral authority, name me a WVU defense as good as this one.
So...now it's the D you say is the best in 20 years, not the team?
Btw Chitown Johnny... for the record I'm highly impressed with how this year's team is performing...however I'll wait till they play at least one or two in this B12 gauntlet before anointing them as the best in 20 years...both the Fiesta and Orange teams were pretty damn good imo!

The 1996 defense was the top defense in the country and had Canute Curtis on the line with Gary Stills as a backup. Both of those guys had a tremendous number of sacks. This year's defense is good, but I do not believe it is 1996 good.

Mwhals, Johnny D. don't care about 1996, he wasn't even born then or was still pooping in his pants if he was. He means the best defense "ever seen by him." So he also never saw any of the teams in the mid-2000's either, which were pretty good as well. Never saw Talley at LB either and those defensive teams were pretty good too.

Cut him some slack as his environment began in 2008. Better late than never.

This...that defense was beast mode before beast mode. Canute was a machine.

I really like our depth. I pray Howard doesn't get injured. If he stays healthy this could be a special year.
