Messenbrink will probably be at Wisconsin by then, coaching up Askren's boys.
It's possible, but he's got this year and next and probably through at least 2032 or 2036 Olys to try to get an Olympic gold, then probably coaching after that. I'd think PSU would bring him on board as an assistant ASAP, but who knows. He seems like someone who is going to be one of the generational coaches like Gable or Cael, so wherever he ends up is going to be very lucky to have him.

The only change during that time that could have changed the trajectory of the program in the way that you are looking for was snapping up DT when he went on the market. It was discussed ad infinitum on here [edit: on the old board for me] and the same usual suspects who just like to argue for arguing's sake were saying the same things they are now, but OSU took the plunge while Iowa sat on their heels because "we like our guys", and now they are rocketing past everyone except PSU. The next DT hire is going to be another one that comes from a place where they understand the new way to do things. Askren would be perfect if his health permitted, but it sounds like it doesn't. Burroughs, Dake, Nolf, Zain, Hall, someone like that, although I'm not sure that they have DT's marketing skills or business acumen on the business side of it.

The absolutely most ideal thing you could do is get two of them to run the program as a head and associate head coach like Tom and Terry are now (say Dake and Nolf) then add Spencer as a lightweight coach and Snyder (maybe?) as a heavyweight coach. That would be a lot of wrestling gravitas that would generate a ton of buzz. They would need to be committed to every level of it from the youth academy to teaching scrambling and funk at the NCAA level to the RTC and MMA side post-college as well. With all of that, with Iowa's legacy, you'd be right back at the top with PSU and Ok St within a couple years. It doesn't matter if Slumlord Millionaire wants to take his ball and go home. With that sort of commitment, the funding will come.
Your dreaming if you think all those top dog Alfa male wrestlers will work together in harmony, especially since their styles differ. TNT are identical twins with the same philosophy. Also, I don’t even think okyst billionaire would flip the bill to hire that dream team. He already pays Taylor 7 figures with the university only kicking in $300,000. You would also need a ton of money to get the guys you want in the HWC. Nolf said he already has an idea who he would want on his staff, and emphasized building the RTC wherever he lands to help recruiting like PSU did. I think the guys from the Cael coaching tree are going to be the most successful coaches, just like the one who came from Gable back in the day.

Wait WAIT, the POS ncaa cleared it BEFORE it happened?????? RIGHT!!!! This IS the POST of the Month right here folks!!!!!
You have no clue what you're talking about. I went through this with Vodka a decade ago both on and offline. There is a reason no one talks about this any more - if you actually looked at the financials in total, you'd never bring it I up again. PSU wasn't losing any money running the camps. Some years they were running 15 to 20 of them including their team camp which is a four day residency camp for HS wrestling teams. At $300 a pop per wrestler so you can imagine the revenue brought in. And there area lot of expenses required in addition to counselor fees.

At ETR we were running clinics at the time and the counselor fees PSU guys could getwere typical of what you would pay. On the higher end, but reasonable considering the draw of those guys. They are more expensive than you think even for non-PSU guys who have D1 experience.

How much money was flowing through the J-Rob camps when they were running? A heck of a lot. And they started in Iowa.

Great marketing for PSU, great opportunities for some of their wrestler to make extra cash in the summer, perfectly legal to the NCAA. I'm sure Iowa was probably doing some of the same (don't know how many they do or how extensive), maybe not as many or expansive. And the wrestlers didn't do them for free.

Serious question and not a question slanted/slighted. The NCAA only cares that counselors are paid fair market value. What was fair market value for the top Penn State guys? How did that compare to a top ranked guy with a title or more at any school not named Iowa? Actual figures would be nice.

Yikes! I thought this photo might have been taken before the dual started or possibly after 184, but looking at the jumbotron - it was taken during the third match of the night against the #1 team in the country.
This is what is referred to as The Beginning of the End. Even for a "fringe sport" like Iowa Wrestling. 😉

Look at what PSU did in the 2025 class. They had the #1,2, 13 and 18. 1 of them already repped the senior world team and another made the finals. The top 3 have all won age level medals. When they want/need guys they get them and nearly all of them pan out.

In 2026, they landed Jayden James and he just beat Melvin Miller. Mind you, they are only graduating 1 starter this season and ALL the others have multiple years left with most having 2 or 3 left after this season…

In 2027, with all of the above, PSU STILL has the #2 in Sidun, #6 in Burnett and #10 in Mangan. OkState has the #7 and #9. Not only is PSU out recruiting them, so is Iowa.

OkState has a LONG way to go to be put in a tier above everyone but PSU, and the distance from there to actually joining PSU in that lofty, top tier is even further than that…
Okie State is solidly 4th in the tournament standings just 4 points out of 3rd via Intermit and 1 point out of 3rd via FLO. And DT is in his second year...and he has a boat load of top recruits coming in the next two years. Class of 26 he gets four of the top 6 and then at least another two of the top 10 in 27. I don't think Okie State has a long way to go; perhaps you just don't want to see what's in front of you. Just like the captain of the titanic...only he had no clue it was there, whereas you see the iceberg but want to pretend it won't sink you.

Not only that, it's the middle of the first period with Bailey up 3-0 in the only match Iowa won. That was taken at the very peak of the night for Iowa. You should have expected everyone to be in their seats cheering right then.

To be fair, though, if you look at the other picture of the arena that I posted for comparison (during Spencer's intro at some random match), that section in the PSU picture is pretty empty, by far the most empty in the whole arena. I have no idea what match that was, though, or if that section is typically only half full.

Anyone who is making the argument that we don’t yet know IF David Taylor will be a great coach is a day late and a dollar short.

The foundation is already laid. With their current crop of freshman and their incoming recruits, they are the #2 program in the country regardless of whether they finish there this year or not. Disputing that is just not reality based.
MSU is drinking some funky kool-aid and trying to sell it to us...

The fact you believe wanting to have as much of a sure thing as possible, before firing the 2nd most successful coach of the last 20 years, is digging myself to China…welp, I don’t see much reason for us to discuss this any further.

Good luck and I hope you get what you wish for. Just remember, “Be careful what you wish for!”…
I'm willing to take that chance. There's no excitement now outside of PK and Mikey, and we're looking like an NCAA 5-8 team so how much worse can it get. Let's roll out the changes!

I don't think we should be worrying about Lee as a future head coach and instead maybe we should be worrying if he's going to make another world team, let alone another Olympics.

I think the idea of him eventually coaching is fun, but I now have the sense it's a pipe-dream and perhaps not a good one at that.

Is he coaching up any of the current guys in the HWC? How about even rolling with any of the guys on the collegiate roster? Is he still rolling with Drake? If so, then none of that is translating over.

Lee was an underrated scrambler. Is he working with any of the starters in that area? What about his arm-bar series? Because FFS we can't turn anyone anymore.

I loved him wrestling for us. I love him repping our US team. But when it comes to "coaching" up anyone else I just ain't seeing it. At all.

Now maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

If Nolf or Dake or JB is ready to step in at Iowa, then light that fuse and get it going. We cannot afford to wait another 3-4 years on a HUGE if in Lee.

Where I do agree with you though, is getting one of those guys on staff as an assistant. If they're fairly compensated I truly think they'd jump at it.

Nolf and Dake are 100% professionals. They're fully aware that if they want to coach they need to start somewhere. Now it's whether or not TNT will actually do what's necessary and right and make that move.
When Nolf was on Flo and they asked him if he would be interested in being Taylor’s top assistant, and he said he’s only interested in having his own program as head coach.

I thought I read somewhere they were having trouble selling out. Is that every dual or just this one? 100 other programs, including PSU, would love Iowa's attendance numbers.
There again, we're comparing everyone's standards to Iowa's standards. I like our standards and I'm not willing to give them up just yet. And if we bring back the excitement people will come. Hell, I remember 4 or 5 years ago taking 12 hours to drive back to Nashville because of a huge *** snow storm. Knowing that the storm was coming I still made the trip for those two plus precious hours in CHA. People love Hawks wrestling; they just need the excitement back. :)

I'm expecting Ok St to overachieve their seeds like PSU used to 15 years ago and finish second this year, although well behind PSU. Starting next year, it's a two horse race every year.

This. It's silly to think that Taylor won't continue to strengthen that program quickly.

Sidenote, Mocco is obviously a stud but I think the Brands missed big time with not recruiting Dreshaun Ross from Fort Dodge. He will be a monster for Okie State. I saw him wrestle a couple times and he is an athletic freak!

I even listed the recruits committed the next 2 years and PSU has, so far, out recruited OkState in 2027 and with a stacked starting lineup they STILL recruited Jayden James this season. Mind you, I am NOT a PSU fan and really have nothing against OkState.

Again, I have listed PSU’s guys in glaring detail and mentioned every pertinent guy OkState has and will have through 2027. OkState may beat everyone else, but they will be hard pressed to score within 30 of PSU and probably closer to 50….

Very top guys were charging a few thousand. Some other guys $500 and up. Lots of variability - duration of appearance, type, etc. No idea about Iowa guys as we are on the Eastern side of the state, but the PSU guys could command more than say a Drexel guy. We did have an Iowa guy from our highschool, Josh Dziewa, but I was never involved in any clinics with him. Josh mostly ran his own training gigs when he was here.

Max askren head coach, lee, nolf, haines and snyder assistants
Pay

500,000 head coach
300000 each assistant

That's about what is handed out currently. They might not turn around the program right away but they would put out an exciting product. I don't need #1, just some excitement. Add carr or cassar in if possible.
Snyder isn’t coaching anywhere in Iowa city nor is a askren. Laughable to think Carr would even consider it. Cassar could help with our outdated roids program.

That's f*ing horrible.
Yea well MAYBE some will start HEARING what I have been saying BEFORE it is TWOOOOO late!!!! There is/was ONLY one place in the USA(maybe the world?) that could draw 15K plus fans to most any good dual!!! It is an INCREDABLY SPECIAL bunch of fans in and around IOWA that still love the sport that much!!!!

MOST on here, MOST wrestling fans have NO idea what a draw Wrestling was. I believe the FIRST sports event in AMERICA to draw a 100K fans was a Wrestling event maybe Gotch vs Hackenschmit? In some other countries, Wrestling still holds an ELITE status!!! Many stories of how Wrestlers are HONORED and make a great living off of it!!!

WEIGHTLIFTING is yet another example I would bring up because it is VERY relevant to this subject!!! AGAIN MOST will have NO clue that AMERICA DOMINATED the SPORT of WEIGHTLIFTING(YES it is a SPORT!!!! how many even know this????)

SOOOO many great stories can be told, then what happened????? PEDS mainly and the SPORT in AMERICA is just about DEAD!!!! From CONSTANT CHAMPIONS and WORLD/ OLYMPIC RECORDS to----- I bet ANYTHING no one one here even has a clue who is the current champions and what are the current records????

I saw it/ went through it with POWERLIFTING( another sport!!!) Wrote a WHOLE article about what was happening and why it is not in the OLYMPICS!!! I mean just look at some of the absolute PATHETIC CRAP that is in the OLYMPICS!!!! Yet a REAL sport such as Powerlifting had no chance!!! WHY

RULES & DRUGS!!!!

OUR current POS ncaa has F**KED up the rules so here WEEEEE go!!! You lose IOWA and the sport is DONE!!!

Ok and DT also had a farm, a wrestling academy, a family and was the coach in waiting behind his mentor . I’m sure plenty said Cael would never leave his Alma mater especially after forcing out his legendary mentor to get the job and then move his entire family and extended family to the middle of Pennsylvania but yet here we are.

Turning down Wall Street is not the same as turning down the head coaching job at Iowa if you don’t think Zain would very seriously consider it then you re crazy and need to take off the blue and white colored glasses
David isn't from PA, nor is his wife. Cael was also not from Iowa. Things are different with Zain. I'm telling you, he would not consider the job. moving 12 hours away with young kids is not what he wants to do.

My friend, you must be a little dense in the head. Feelings instead of facts? You told me there's no chance OSU was going to be a tier above all the others except PSU for a LONG time and I'm telling you you are full of sh*t. And who said anything about OSU breaking the scoring record let alone beating PSU? Your deal is that you take what someone says, mix it up in that f'ed up brain housing group of yours, and then spew out a bunch of crap mixed in with your Wrestlestat factoids that collectively and/or individually have no relevancy whatsover to what the previous poster said. I'm not sure you two are that far from each other in the overall scheme. MSU thinks between what PSU has currently and what they have coming nobody and he means NOBODY is touching them in the next 3-4 years. Nashville thinks OSU with the young guys there and the next wave of recruits will soon move into 2nd place alone and threaten PSU. I think OSU will move into 2nd place island by 2028 NCAA and threaten as soon as 2029. When I say threaten I mean still lose but within the margins so the team race isn't wrapped up Friday Night. We could all have different definitions of what it takes to be considered a threat. Some people think tOSU is a threat to PSU this year where I just don't see it.

I get that Tom has done better, but that's because he was handed the keys to a very big castle when he came to Iowa...and Iowa is simply a better wrestling school than tOSU. You're right, it's not easy to get a great coach but when you're a football program like Alabama the great coaches come to you. I think the same will happen when Tom decides to move on. Iowa is a great place for college wrestling and the great coaches will want to come to Iowa City.
Possibly. Brands has done better than Ryan of course and the next fellow might get it done.

You and I are of the same opinion. MSU tries to put my words in a blender and then tell me I'm wrong about something I never even said. Guy's a stats guru, which I appreciate, but he's also a content manipulator which I don't appreciate. All of that said, I'm sure he's a great guy and this is just a wrestling board so in the grander scheme of thing it's pretty far down there. But because we love our wrestling regardless of who we cheer for things always get a bit touchy. LOL.

None of us are any place near normal. What kind of idiots travel in frigid weather to Lincoln, NE or Fargo,ND in January or Feb. to watch a couple hours of guys doing battle on a mat? Worse yet when I don't go I have several screens going so I can watch BTN,BTN+,Espn+,Flo, and any other steam I can get. We all love this sport. I'm at this moment deciding if I should take the 3 hour drive to stinkin Lincoln tonight. Do I really want to hear a certain white haired goon yell and whine for 2 hours? My grandson really want to go so I'm thinking I will do it. They cancelled school so we could hit the road around noon.

You always want to be the smartest guy in the room, but sadly you're not even close. But I will give you credit for attempting to be the most manipulative. What a bullsh*tter!
Lmfao. How many times did you use “2 horse race”? Do you know what that saying even means? YOU are the one that moved the goal posts. NOT me. If you simply said you believed they would clearly be ahead of everyone else, we wouldn’t have even had this back and forth. But, YOU DID NOT.

I didn’t argue one bit that they wouldn’t be ahead of everyone else. But, a 2 horse race directly implies that they would have a truly realistic chance at beating PSU and I simply showed how UNREALISTIC that is.

Maybe pick your words better before calling me the dense one…oh, and go back and read again regarding “tiers”. I was talking about their actually being in the same tier as PSU, not a tier above the rest. Right now, PSU is SO FAR ahead of EVERYONE that there is actually room for multiple tiers above the rest before even reaching PSU…

Semantics I guess. If you host a race with two horses both lining up to race one another I'm sure you are saying one can't be an enormous favorite? In any event you guys are not that far from one another in actual thoughts about team situations moving forward. I think OSU will be alone in tier 2 within a couple of more years. Challenging PSU in a serious way could take a looooooong time. It is probably still a one horse race for some time.

When the saying is used to disregard 75 other teams it is NOT meant to be used that way. If he did he used it incorrectly and never said otherwise. In fact one of his very first posts was about coming back to him in a couple years to see OkState being right there with PSU.

If he clearly says PSU will still be quite far ahead of OKState even in a few years, I will be happy to concede. But, I am pretty sure he won’t and, if he did, it’s a major change from how this all started.

To be clear I can see how he thinks this. If you believe Jax>Blaze. Vega>Ono,Rob>Duke. and Dlock is going to win it once MM graduates it could be a real race in 2028. I don't believe all of these are true and really not sold on any of them.

Don't even try it brother. You know and I know, you're a manipulator and a ******** artist. Save your crap for someone else. BTW, currently Okie State has 6 freshmen in the top 9 in DT's second year. Yeah, there's no chance they'll be a tier above everyone not named PSU for a "LONG" time...whatever! Go pester someone else.

Words have meaning. Choose them better if you don’t want to be challenged on them. I couldn’t care less what you think of me. Out of everything I have posted here, that stance has been made abundantly clear. You said what you said. I directly called you on it, with clear, unmanipulated data.

You can obfuscate all you want, but resorting to insults in the end clearly shows how far behind in this argument you fell…
