It really is amazing what a lightning rod the cowbells are...

..The owner of our company and my direct boss... who is an AU grad.. just called me and spent 15 minutes going on about how the cowbells are blatant cheating. This is a man old enough to qualify for AARP and is usually extremely level-headed, even when it comes to SEC football. He loves to talk about it and has good senses of humor and of the big picture. I don't poke and prod with him and he doesn't with me. Win or lose.

I don't know what set him off, but the cowbell issue just pushed him over the edge.

"A cowbell never tackled anybody."

"Anybody at any SEC school can take a cowbell into a game."

I've always wondered how much louder it was in the huddle than 50,000 people yelling and screaming. I know it is deafening to me when I am ringing one in each hand but I wonder how much louder it is on the field than normal fired up crowd noise. I've never been down there. It would seem like with the tens of thousands of dollars to be lost that somebody might take a noise meter and compare the two. Just the engineer/pseudo-lawyer in me but it would be a good defense at the end of the season to have a noise meter hooked up to a laptop recording the noise levels during the games.

Wonder if I could find some grant money and work this into a PhD dissertation?

No one has released official figures, but the short answer is that our stadium at current capacity puts out about the same noise as War Memorial in Little Rock. Since that seats 53,727, it's generally safe to say the cowbells give next to no advantage as far as noise levels on the field of play.

Speaking for your opponents, we just find them pointless and annoying...

right before halftime, when Memphis was about to attempt a field goal. The cowbells came out pretty loud, but I was still able to talk to the people next to me just fine.

Why are State fans insistent on ringing them at times when we know State will be punished for it?

By not ringing the cowbells between the time the opponent breaks the huddle and the time the ball is snapped? I'm willing to just yell then to protect my ability to ring my cowbell after a big play. (OK, that's technically illegal, too, but I doubt the SEC would penalize us if we did that.)

I'm not going to be able to take my cowbell next year and I'm pissed. Not at the SEC. I can understand their side, even if i disagree. I don't understand State fans willing to let cowbells be banned just so they can ring them freely for one year.

People don't like being told what they can't do. It hardens their resolve to do it anyways.

What did Trent Lott say when the big state flag referendum was going on? "You try and shove Mississippians, they'll tell you where to go... even if you're right!"?

People (of all ages) would rather have the fight straight-up than accept rules handed down from a position of authority. On a national scale, we call concepts like this "freedom" and "liberty", and cheer the fact that we have it.
