Veazey tweeted earlier that he has been trying to track down Kenny Rogers for 10 days. Basically, we had to turn it in to the SEC, mainly because we had one of our own former players on the take (Rogers) and that could have lead to a real shatstorm for us. The NCAA questioned Bond - the media got wind of the story - Bond did the right thing by getting ahead of it. If the media broke the story, the extent of their info would have been "the NCAA is speaking with former MSU QB John Bond about Newton's recruitment" - without any supporting quotes or info. How would that have looked for us? Everyone would have been speculating over what Bond was saying, then he would have made an after-the-fact statement trying to explain things away and saying - oh by the way, sorry Auburn. Instead, Bond got lawyered up and said his piece, saying all the right things including the fact that he has nothing against Auburn. </span> <div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; ">

The way I read it, they did it pretty much as soon as they heard from Bond.

and Cam didn't even visit Auburn until mid-December. Therefore, it is VERY likely that we had already reported the Rogers incident to the SEC office before the Newtons even got involved with the possibility of Cam going to Auburn.
