It's been a pretty crappy few days for USM...

USM gets downgraded to the Hawaii Bowl, Fedora leaves, and three CUSA members are leave for the Big East, leaving Conference USA with only 9 teams. They lose $1million by beating Houston, and will lose another $500,000 traveling to Hawaii.<div>

But you've got to see who else is going to leave. At the rate it's going, either another school is going to have join the alliance (maybe Louisiana Tech and shift Rice as well as UTEP to the west) or anotheruniversity will have to leave.

Maybe it'll be something like this:

East Division
ECU
Memphis
USM
Tulane
Rice
Tulsa
Marshall
UAB

West Division
UTEP
Colorado State
UNLV
Fresno State
Nevada
New Mexico
Wyoming
Hawaii

Edited to add Hawaii since they're going to be a football-only MWC member in 2012.

to be their new head coach. Said he would get things back to their "traditional hard nosed defense". Would that be an upgrade for Ellis? I loved the guy while he was at State, so I can't say that would be a bad choice if they could get him. Definitely a lousy week for their fans and their players' parents.

*Ellis Johnson rumor could be Germans

Blaming him for having them in a ****** conference situation. I guess they feel like they should be in a bigger conference and it should have happened a long time ago. They are having a hard time coming to terms and understanding the landscape of college football and where they fit in.

Your football program is as close to relevance as it will ever be and you get kicked in the nuts by your coach, not once, but twice.

As for Ellis Johnson energizing the fan base, he's only got to excite 10 people. How hard could that be?

1. USM just destroyed the #6 team in the country on national tv to win a conference title....Feel sorry for that?
2. USM just got screwed by a bitter AD in choosing the wrong bowl... Our mistake for not firing the AD before now. Expect our AD to either resign or be fired tomorrow.....You can feel sorry for that, but our mistake for not moving sooner.
3. Loss of BCS money.....We won a Conference Championship instead. You play to win...Nothing to feel sorry about.
4. Teams leaving for Big East....USM's record against those 3 teams...UCF 6-1..SMU..3-0..Houston..9-5....We aren't stupid. We know it is about ESPN and market sizes. We can't change that.....Feel sorry for us being in a small market, but can't change that. The MWC/CUSA merger will be better than just the old CUSA. Have to hope so anyway.
5. 18 straight winning seasons and 14 bowls in last 15 years. Not against SEC competition, but in our universe, a lot to be proud of....Nothing to feel sorry about there.

Anyway, USM will be fine without Fedora. He did what he was hired to do. Raise the talent level and bring some excitement to the program. I still think if you look at his first three years, he actually didn't achieve much on the field, but in recruiting he did. That will make it easier for the next coach.

1. Great win.
2. Yeah, you got screwed. Would be good for you guys if Gianini did "resign"
3. One thing I did like was Gianini's quote last week that basically said screw the money, we want to win.
4. I don't see losing those3 teams as a big deal for CUSA. Agree that the new merged league will be at least as good as the old CUSA.
5. There's a lot to be said for winning no matter who the competition is.
6. I think you'll be fine without Fedora too. Being a stepping stool is way underrated. It means your coach did a good job and left the program in good shape. I'd call that a win.

His family lives there and who knows, he could get the HC job when Spurrier steps down.

Still hasn't stopped spending all his time trying to convince an MSU board that southern miss is "cool". That's cute

Personally... I think towards the end of the season, you guys got a pretty ****** deal. It sucks, but for the most part it doesn't look like yall will be hurt in the long run. I'm kind of curious to see how this merger will look like. It doesn't look appealing by any means, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Ellis Johnson made a terrible head coach. His record is very Crxxms, and he coached at small schools with no competition.

question. I have a couple of buzzard friends who say they would take Tyrone Nix as the next head coach. I scratched my head and said you do remember we play you in 2014 don't you. They looked perplexed. This can't be a possibility can it?

Tyrone Nix would be lucky to get a position coaching job at USM. His defenses were starting to fail when Spurrier was kind enough to hire him away and well, his last couple of defenses at TSUN speak for themselves. Nix is not highly thought of these days and that is somewhat of an understatement. What is surprising is that Nix is supposedly a finalist for the DC at Arkansas. If I were you guys I would hope that happens.

in all honesty for what USM is they are good at it. They are in conference USA and they cannot help that so they go out and win. However i think they would be dumb to go out and get a defensive coach with the way that team has been built the last couple years. Just go out and get a competent d coordinator and all will be well. Get an offensive minded HC the way the CUSA is setup now. MWC-CUSA conference would be more deserving than the "new" piss poor Big East. They did not deserve a BCS bid this year and lose all their best teams this year and next. They just added a bunch more non BCS worthy teams.
