And it's really cool to think about how sixpackspeak started as just a message board that kicked Genespage MB ***, and now it will be a part of a site that has articles that kick Gene's ***. That would be a kick *** website. (assuming it happens of course.)

The entire draw of SPS is that this is the "outsiders" board. This is the board that tells all those fake-*** commercial boards to suck it. When this becomes just another fake *** commercial board (and signing with anyone that requires subscription will make it that way eventually) then someone else is going to have to go out and start a new outsiders board. So start reserving those domain names now!

If it goes too far then the outlaw band of rebels will go find another outlaw band of rebels place to show their non-conformity. That's the problem with damned outlaw bands of rebels.

To me, SPS's draw is that it is the open board-- criticism, comments, etc. are welcome. See SnakePlissken's July 6 post and Todd4State's reply for further detail.

I've seen it over and over again. it usually goes a little something like this: a board gets popular because of the content provided by the community. The person who runs the board eventually looks up and says, "Holy ****! I'm putting a ton of time into this and I get nothing out of it. Surely with this audience I can make some money!" (At this point I want to interject that I have zero problem with the way DS has handled the board, he absolutely deserves to have ads on here for the time he puts into it, I'm talking about other situations I have seen.) So, then comes the partnership with the pay site or simply trying to take it mainstream commercial. Now, the money comes from subscriptions instead of the ads, so more important than eyeballs on the site is feeding the beast. The people who are "Premium Members" start feeling some sort of ownership of the site because they pay and those other bastards are just along for the ride. They start with little backroom discussion on their "private" board about how things need to change. Anyone with some sort of sensetivity or issue finds a nice pile of other premium members who will support them because someday they may also want to punish the peons. Soon all sorts of little rules trickle out one by one to keep the subscribers happy. Threads start getting locked when the freebies do something wrong but not when the paybis do the same thing. During all of this people conveniently forget that the content is what brings people in and the free folks provide most of the content while the pay members are skulking around in their private forum paddling each other and screwing goats for their initiation ritual.
Yeah, I'm taking it a bit over the top but I've seen it happen many times. I'm all for DS making some green but staying "officially unofficial" is part of the draw here. Look at almost any user generated content site on the internet that has gone commercial and you will find a small group of uber-users who are <17>ing it up for everyone else. If I'm not mistaken that is the entire reason that this site got started in the first place.
