It's not always so great to be the Auburn Tiger

That was a funny story. Wasn't clear but I assume the fire truck was in the parade and got called away before it finished. Man they put some bony little guys in that suit. No wonder aubie looks like he just got over a hookworm treatment.

This reminds me of two stories:

1. I used to live in Houston. In 1990, The Houston Astros introduced a little-known mascot named "Orbit". He was a green, chubby, alien looking thing with an Astros jersey and hat. The guy who played Orbit had been called up from the Tuscon Toros (kinda like Homer Simpson in that one epsisode). Anyway, the guy who played Orbit was under the mistaken impression that Orbit was famous. He was working a promo event one afternoon, and the way home he needed to stop off at the bank. He thought it would be cute to walk into the bank wearing his Orbit outfit. Now, bank security was not as tight back then as it is today, but the Bill Murray movie "Quick Change" had just come out earlier that year. In that movie, Murray robs a bank dressed as a clown. So, the bank tellers hit the police call button as soon as "Orbit" entered the building. He wound up arrested, and, because the cops were really pissed at him, he stayed arrested and missed the Astros game that night.

2. At the Auburn-MSU game last year, Auburn had some deal in between the 1st and 2nd quarters where they recognized some alumni group. I attended the game with a bunch of Auburn alums. So, this group walks/runs out on the field, and its a large group of men, probably more than 50. Some of them are wearing wigs and funny outfits. The majority of them are jumping around, dancing and pantomiming. We weren't sure what was going on, and then they announced the group was the "Friends of Aubie", meaning this were all guys who had worn the Aubie costume over the years.

And there they all were, trying to out pantomime each other. It was ridiculous, and probably would make a good SNL skit.

And Auburn's mascot rules are absurd. They copied them from Disney World. They can't ever take off the head in public, and they can't ever talk. And there can only be one Aubie performing at a time, meaning, even if two different people are supposed to play Aubie in two different locations, they have to time it so that they are not performing simultaneously.

Those absurd rules have produced an eight time national mascot champion (the most all-time) and one of the first three mascots to be inducted in the mascot HOF. Mock that if you will, but being that national champion and a hall of famer in whatever your field is pretty strong. I love Bully, but he's not in Aubie's league.

Seriously, the rules I was talking about having nothing to do with Aubie being a chamioinship mascot.

Seriously?.....

Because the guy can't take off his head in public or two performing at the same time is why he won some mythical mascot competition.

And to that regard, does anyone really care? I know that one is waaaaaay down on my priority list.

Bully won a national title, circa 2000 or so, right?

eta: (from a basketball media guide via the google)
Seven years ago during national cheerleading
competition in Daytona Beach,
Fla., Mississippi State University’s “Bully”
was honored as the 2002 National Cheerleaders
Association (NCA) national mascot
champion.

I'll bet bully has a story about last season......

Getting run over by the ESPN cart and hauled away in an ambulance with a compound fracture, in costume (minus the head). Hmmm I wonder if aubie would let em take off his head in a similar circumstance?

Two other thoughts come to mind.

With all of the 'rules' do they let Corso wear the head on CGD? Would they dare let aubies disembodied head be exposed on national TV? As a side note, can you imagine what it smells like inside some of those heads?

Also the no head off in public sounds like a challenge to me students. Yank, tear, cut aubies head off at the game and post a pic! In the interest of sportsmanship try to leave the underlying human's noggin relatively intact though.

I don't want to start a fight at this hour of the day, but a Mascot National Championship has to be the most useless thing I've ever heard of.

Aubie is revered there. They aren't going to mess with him.

I actually think their mascot is cool. Very distinctive personality and has been consistent over the years. Once upon a time, Bully was cool too. During the Croom error, he was the best thing we had going.

Corso cannot wear the head. Whenever he is at an Auburn game and picks Auburn, he just wears a giant foam Auburn helmet.

And another thing about those "Friends of Aubie"....

If you ever watch Aubie perform, he has to wobble his head side-to-side, towards one shoulder and then the other. I was at a wedding a few years ago where I met a guy who used to play Aubiie, and that was actually how he danced. He wobbled his head just like Aubie. I asked him about it, and he said after two years of doing it all the time, it became kinda involuntary.

Laugh about that title all you want, but think about how much national exposure it provides Auburn for free.

I bet every one of you can name the mascots and the school they are associated with that appear in the Capital One commercials that will be showing every weekend here very soon.

I wasn't talking about THEIR students.....

He's coming to DWS in a couple of months. Hold him down and give him the unmasking the masked wrestler treatment hehehe.....

Of course bully would never be able to go back to JHS.

That was poorly worded. I wasn't trying to imply that the rules were why he has won. I was saying that in spite of the rules that people laugh at like him not being allowed to talk and referring to themselves as Friends of Aubie, the mascot is widely recognized as one of the best in the country, and has been consistently viewed in that way for 20 years or more. Someone in the thread said "revered." Pretty accurate assessment. I know that since 2010 the bitterness between State and Auburn has intensified, but people shouldn't let that blind them. Just because something is associated with Auburn doesn't mean it's bad. In addition to being recognized as a good mascot, Aubie's likeness also brings in a ton of money to the university (shirts, calendars, figurines, etc), so there's more to it than a trophy. He's in that Capital One Mascot thing this year, meaning he'll be in national commercials for that all the time. More good publicity.

I never said Aubie was a bad mascot, I said their rules for him are absurd. I mean, think about the story in the original post: A college kid who inadvertently interrupted a fire emergency can't even explain to the firefighters and police what's going on. He is extremely lucky he didn't wind up in jail. Heck, you would think Auburn would REQUIRE him to take off the Aubie head if he's in the backseat of a police cruiser. And he can't even call for help when he is stranded out in the middle of nowhere? That's just dangerous.

By the way, I have been making fun of these rules and the guys who play Aubie for about 30 years. This has nothing to do with bitterness over anything. Its just my own common sense observations.

I would say that story was more about Trey's bad decision-making than Aubie's rules. I can go with not talking to your friends or at public appearances, but that was taking things a little too far. And by a little I mean waaaay too far.

Great story.

I really didn't expect this thread to turn into a National Champion Mascot Pissing Match. Has to be an SPS first. Hopefully a last time too.
