I watch ESPN3 on my ipad2. It usually is in HD and works nice. Occasionally you'll get a game that's in standard or the game can freeze but you just close it and reopen and it's back to normal. ESPN3 is also a streaming option on Xbox360 but it's not going to be HD. I never stream it on Xbox. I believe with Apple TV you can play what's on your iPad through your flatscreen. I haven't bought it yet. At this point you might as well just save up for the new Xbox720 or Playstation4. I bet you'll be able to watch ESPN3 on those just like it's regular ESPN. Streaming HD in full 1080p. Can't wait.
