man...Crooms couldn't hold a candle to Sherrill. Sherrill's attitude about Alabama was to kick that ***, while Crooms' attitude was one of being subservient toward them and kissing that *** intsted of wanting to kick it.

Coach Sherrill tells the same stories, talks in circles, and sometimes doesn't make much sense. However, when it comes to football, he was very smart and knew exactly what he was doing. Sometimes, I think he talked in circles and didn't make sense on purpose.

Croom......exact....opposite.

On JJ and Keffer.....I always liked the way JJ (and Dicenzo) flipped the football out of his hands in rememberance of Keffer on each TD.

Sherrill always credited his players and assistant coaches for the success he encountered in Starkville.

That's what a good head coach does.

"What did help me alot was when myself and four players went to speak at a FCA dinner in French Camp," said Sherrill. "I told the players to follow me and I would ride by myself. But Edward Yeates said he wanted to ride with me. On the way there, Edward asked me why I was having a tough time getting over Keffer's death. We had a good talk and I have to contribute Edward for helping me a great deal."

I was fortunate to meet several players at MSU while I lived there. I met Edward and he is probably one of the best guys I have ever known that came through MSU athletics. I am glad that Jackie recognized him in this article.

That was a great article. Even though we did let Jackie hang on a couple more years than we should have, we can still look back at him and see that he was a great coach and man. He never gets credit for a lot of the good things he did and never wanted publicity for them.

I think with Croom on the other hand, the more that time passes, and the more he shoots his mouth off, the more people will realize what a completely inept coach he was and that all his character talk was BS.

but didnt jackie take his leave and not really even speak about the program after he left?
i know he didnt get back into coaching, but i dont remember anything like this after he was gone.
i know he was under "investigation", but jesus, he had a few really great years. it seems like croom is being bitter while trying not to be bitter.

I heard Jackie say on the SEC drive time show once that he love Miss State and that he had already paid for his Grand children to go to school there. I don't know if it was MPAC or MACS or some other program but I heard it for my self. Not second hand.

My last year at state was Jackie's first year. I was not sure about the guy and saw him in the student union talking about the previous Saturday game to the students on several occasions but after I graduated I bought a Harley Davidson and I took off work one Friday to ride up to Starkville. This was before Hwy 25 was extended and it ran right by a quick stop in Carthage. I stop there to get something to drink and rest for a few minutes. While sitting there I saw a Ford Thunderbird pull up and Jackie got out went into the store and came out of the store over to me to ask about the bike. We talked for about 15 minutes or so. I have been a Jackie fan ever since. He is a really nice guy.</p>

that, for a time, he made schools like Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Florida, and OM State's little bitches. He had teams that weren't afraid of taking on the big boys. His best teams were the ones that would go into the stadium, punch the opponents in the mouth, and dare them to hit back.

He got State over that stupid inferiority complex MSU fans had for years about Ole Miss. He showed them for what they really were, an average school with a decent football program, but has sucked donkey balls since Kennedy was assassinated.

I feel bad that the only two times I ever spoke with Sherrill, I pissed him off....but then again, the only times I spoke with him was in 2003 when we were all pissed off at the football team.

"Chalk Talk". Every Monday sometime before lunch, he had a students-only session in the Union building. He would go over highlights from the previous week, talk about getting ready for the next game, and take student's questions. Coolest thing ever. I scheduled my classes around Chalk Talk.

I recall the week of the Florida game the year Shane Matthews came to town, that Sherrill sent an assistant to do the chalk talk. Don't recall who it was. He said Sherrill was putting in extra prep time for the Florida game. The assistant went over the matchups and admitted Florida has better athletes. He said the difference in the game was going to be intenstiy. He said our DBs were going to blow up Florida's recievers and make them not want to catch the football. I was thinking - yea we're gonna get creamed. But dammit, he was right.

...got a ton of personal fouls. Remember that?

That's because Jackie realized the only way MSU athletes could compete with the Bama, Auburn, UT, etc. athletes was to get in a street brawl with them.

The best of the Jackie years saw football teams that were mean as hell, hard hitting, full of swagger & full of hate when it came to "SEC rivals."

MSU football has, of course, lost all that since then & has come nowhere near getting it back.
