Jackson hasn`t accomplished much of late but has never been a real embarrassment outside of our state. That`s about to change in a major way. The national press is going to love this guy(they love all train wrecks). He may single handedly save the Clarion Ledger also with his daily antics.

Melton embarrassed the city a few times. Nothing like this guy is going to do though. As much hell as he caught for being a do-nothing mayor, that's actually a lot better than having Melton or Lumumba in there.

One day after he wins the primary, and he is already trying to re-write history to reflect that Africans discovered America before Columbus. http://www.clarionledger.com/articl...a-s-comments-Christopher-Columbus-fuel-debate

Even if he believed that, why stir up trouble one day after the election? This synopsis is supposed to show what a great guy he is--decide for yourself. http://www.frontlinedefenders.org/node/488

Good luck, Jackson. You're in for a wild ride one way or the other.

I see where he's coming from - Columbus didn't 'discover' America, and he wasn't even the first European to make his way here.

However, there are a few things wrong with this entire picture:
1) The mayor of Jackson doesn't set curriculum for the public school system, even the one in Jackson. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have the authority to order any changes to it. I could be wrong though.
2) Don't worry about all the drugs, prostitution, robberies, rape, underfunded and overworked public servants, and ****** streets. Let's make sure Columbus gets pulled from the JPS history curriculum first. You know, priorities 'n ****.
3) If you are sincere about trying to build consensus and govern fairly (which he says but I'm pretty sure he doesn't mean), shouldn't you take a step back from what will be perceived as uber-liberal-I-hate-Whitey rhetoric? Just sayin'.

I learned about Leif Ericson at Clinton Junior High--if not earlier. I don't think they're doing "Columbus discovered America" anymore.

I sure hope he makes sure our chemistry classes aren't teaching the phlogiston theory.

I just moved to fondren last Monday. Grew up in the flowood/Brandon area then lived in starkville for 8-9 years. This will be my first time as a Jackson citizen. It is going to be interesting.

I do believe that blacks get shat on in American history lessons. We learn to revere our founding fathers and gloss over the fact that several of them owned slaves.

There is a school of thought that Moors were in America before Columbus based upon archeological findings. However, Columbus’ “discovery” was obviously the catalyst leading to European settlement in America. It’s kind of ******** to say a European “discovered” a place where people were already living. I like the idea of teaching kids the different theories of something and letting them decide for themselves or become curious enough to research it themselves. However, with the flawed, “teach to the test” educational system, we have to have Christopher Columbus as a multiple choice option to “Who discovered America?”

I like the outside the box thinking. His overall message about teachers inspiring students is a good one. It's a shame that it gets lost in this racial crap.

Not saying this to be funny but you live a few blocks from Virden Addition, arguably the worst neighborhood in Jax (maybe battlefield park). Hopefully you have bars, security storm doors, etc... Lock everything you own religiously. My grandmother moved from Council Circle after 40+ years after multiple break ins and a mugging in the drive way. I lived in Fondren for 6 months and moved after 2 attempted break ins.

Nobody still credits Columbus with discovering America, and I'd be shocked if that's what school children are being taught. He wasn't even the first European to discover America. But his voyages were still hugely historically significant and should be taught in schools. Lumumba is trying to rewrite history to fit his agenda. And the theories about the Moors or other North Africans travelling to America are widely discredited. They're about as valid as the Ancient Aliens theories out there.

Think you meant Harvey Johnson was the do-nothing mayor, which he was, but I did like Melton better than Johnson. Kenneth Stokes was kept under control much better while Melton was in charge.

You're acting like schools are teaching kids that the Americas were vacant before Columbus got here. Who is doing that?

Me and my 5th grade daughter are at home right now. Lets test this...

Me: Who discovered America?

Her: Indians. Or Christopher Columbus.

Me: Anybody else?

Her: Animals. Maybe Vikings.

It was created by an educational foundation from Saudi Arabia. They basically created a myth that Chris Columbus's navigator was moorish/muslim. Which is not too far from the original story. This idea or statement by Chokwe is just PC revisionist history and doesn't mean much, but it shows a little window into his thinking. I'm sure he's got much bigger things in mind. And probably not good things.

Had a friend and his wife move to Fondren 20 years ago into a nice old house. They had relatives from inner city New Orleans and Mobile and were urbanites. They weren't there a month when the wife walked in on a burglar climbing into her window. They moved out immediately and have been suburbanites ever since.

Really? I live in New England and Jackson has a pretty horrible reputation up yonder. It's consistently up there on the list of highest homicides per capita.

This is probably an unpopular statement but I honestly think he could do some kind of good as mayor, obviously he'll do some bad due to him ignoring day-to-day issues that are pretty important, but on the social front he could be a shot in the arm for a key issue facing Jackson.

Jackson does have a problem of inner-city students skipping school and dropping out. If whatever this guy's name is can impact the young African-American culture in Jackson in a positive way, he's done some good. The Jackson public school system is awful, and maybe when he figures out he can't rewrite history books he'll focus on fixing the broken school systems.

While my teachers told us that Columbus discovered America in like 4th grade, history teachers as I got older and could actually comprehend expanded on that by saying he was the one who got America rolling and wasn't necessarily the first person here. Columbus Day though? Complete horseshit holiday.

Side note: There's no way some of that stuff written about Mississippi in the 80's is true... right? Maybe I'm ignorant because I'm young and went to Gulfport public schools all my life where African-Americans were the majority, but most of the racist bastards I know are cowards. I also take offense to him claiming white children were taught to be racist too. I didn't hear the n-word until I was in 8th grade and had to go home and ask my mom what it was and why the kid who said it at school got in such big trouble. Anyway, just my opinion, but we're not going to finally get over this crap when public figures keep bringing it up to generation after generation.

Kind of begs the question of how to teach history without any people group perspective or "slant". You could get close on the what happened, but the reasons why would be a complete matter of subjectivity depending on which side of history you were on. White Americans, greatest country on earth with the most freedom, etc. If you actually got dragged over here as a slave that perspective changes as it does if you were Native American, etc. Then idiots like Edwin just make up crap and then want to ensure that the kids don't even have the benefit of learning what actually happened and then forming their own opinions about what that means. And with that paragraph, I've probably spent more time contemplating the teaching of history than the entire populace of public and private school students in MS...

I'm with you on racists being cowards. The thing that kills me about this whole deal is that when I see idiot white supremacists or other racists I quickly identify them as such and promptly write them off as complete morons. I don't think, "Hey, that guy would make a great mayor!".

You should read 1491 and 1493 by Charles Mann. A little dry, but well researched books on the Americas before and after Columbus. Good writer, good speaker, nice guy. Had the pleasure of having dinner with him at a national meeting where he was the invited speaker.

My biggest frustration with Jackson my whole life is that I think there is so much hope for it. It is basically a microcosm of several cities with similar troubles, comparable demographics, affluent surrounding areas, etc but having a smaller population/size it should be much easier to get things trending upward under the right leadership. There is a lot to love about Jackson, and if there was just a glimmer of hope maybe some of the money would start to drift back in from the burbs and boost the economy even more. I have no idea who the right person is, but I'd lay down my life savings today it isn't Lumumba. And it won't matter if the textbooks say Lumumba himself discovered America if none of the schools or students can afford to buy them.

It's all about where in Fondren you live. If you live closer to State St....trouble. Closer to Old Canton...you're fine. I've lived in Fondren for 2 years now and have never had a problem. The worst I've even heard of on my street was that somebody had an attempted break-in to their car about a year ago but they didn't get in. I'm not saying you shouldn't be cautious but 80% of Fondren is very safe and crime free.

I agree. I'm just hoping the neighborhood sticks together and the police force in the area is not drastically cut. I've enjoyed living in Fondren, and the neighborhood has been making quite the resurgence in recent years. I would hate to see that progress reversed, and I believe the neighborhood (much like other areas such as Belhaven) will weather the storm and come out alright on the other side.
