It will be the beginning of the end of the MAIS. I expect that JA and others would soon follow.

the championship has come down to Prep and JA every single year. Waste of time. The other sports are a different story but there is no reason for two different leagues.

Prep competes week in and week out in MHSAA. I think they've done very well getting up for individual games, but I'm not sure if they could be championship caliber, at least not off the bat. I do think they'd make the playoffs, though.

And I can see it being a very good move for Prep. They'd cut their travel cost in half, if not more. Plus they'd instantly be competitive in their class. They'd be competing with schools like Florence, Raymond, Magee, Mendenhall, etc. As Todd says, you'd see other schools like JA, etc. follow. MAIS would quickly either dissolve completely or be left with nothing but extremely small schools.

Right now Prep can 'recruit' from anywhere they want, while the public schools can't. Will that have to change or be restricted somehow for Prep to join the MHSAA?

and it never happens. I think Prep knows that it has a good thing going and doesn't want anything to change. However I do know that they asked to join the MHSAA in smaller sports like tennis, golf, cross country, etc. a few years back and were denied. MHSAA won't allow them to join in just some sports, it's all or nothing. If it did happen though, it would be the end of MAIS sports in the Jackson area. JA and MRA would be close behind.

cannot openly recruit. Most all of the kids that play there are not recruited players. I am not denying there might be one or two that are.

However, part of this move, I presume, would be to permit the school to openly recruit much like Evangel Christian in Shreveport. Prep would be competitive in their division right away. But, over time -- watch out.

And no, I have not heard this. But, I don't keep my head up in the middle of the school gossip, etc.

in the MHSAA. I know St. Al got students from Tallulah, LA, Rolling Fork, Port Gibson, etc. It's up to the parents to decide if they want to send their kids to the school. Even a former St. Al student decided to go to Prep.

Do you think that Jared Foster left Canton Academy to go to Madison Central and wasn't recruited? He didn't even live in the Madison Central district. His dad rented an apartment in the district, but nobody lived there.

Parents: Our son has a chance to play college football. Where does he have a better chance to prove his worth? Let's move to Madison Central's district.

They didn't move to Madison Central's district. His parents live in the Canton School District. The district line runs east-west along the north line of the Stapleton Subdivision on Highway 51 (Stapleton is on the east side of 51 just north of Sowell Road). Their house ain't in the district, not even close. Trust me. I've even got the map here in my office somewhere showing the entire district.

You are right, he did want to go, but Madison Central did recruit him somewhat. I promise you that.

I don't know anything about this, but don't most states use some sort of multiplier. For instance, for the purposes of classification, all private school enrollments would be multiplied by a number like 1.5 (I'm making that number up). If a private school had an enrollment of 300, they would be classified as though they had 450 students (300 * 1.5).

that the MHSAA was going to extend membership invitations to the private schools that are accredited by SACS. I know someone in administration at one of the schools that confirmed that it has happened. However, there is a wait and see attitude about it. If Prep goes, there will be a few others that follow and some that stay because they can be more competitive.

So it obviously does happen at least in some instances. I know very little about any of this since I grew up in Northeast MS.

I know who you're talking about that went from St. Al to Prep. I think he went to live with his uncle around this area. St. Joe had people from all over as well; all parts of Jackson, Madison, Ridgeland, Canton, and even students from Pelahatchie and Morton. Like you said, if their parents want to pay the tuition, it's up to them where they want to send their kids. I do know that Catholic students got a good discount on tuition, so that could be an advantage as well.

My pops sat on Ennis Proctor's board for many years before retirement. Back in the mid 90's he and I talked several times about the MPSA (not sure what it's called now) being allowed to possibly schedule MHSAA teams. The hurdles he talked about then were huge just to putting those guys on a public school's schedule. One of the biggest concerns was the aspect of "recruiting" and the backlash they were feeling from coaches around the state at the thought of losing athletes.

If it ever is to happen, I imagine there will be some included language (at least behind the scenes) that deals with recruiting and the possibility that in the future schools like Prep and JA may offer scholarships or reduced tuition to "disadvantaged" students.

And too, all the older guys who sat on that board had given their lives to public education. They went through integration and saw the private schools come into being. The overall feeling I got from most on the board back then was a sentiment of "Wait... years ago you didn't want any part of our education process but now that you'd like to legitimize your athletics programs you've come crawling back? Well, no thanks."

I can't see what the MHSAA stands to gain from extending membership to the private schools, but it's a really complicated issue. Me?... I'd rather things would go back to where the private school scores had their own little section of the Friday night football shows that come on at 10 o'clock. Oh, that and back to NOT playing USM.

I work with all the private schools in Memphis and the big three in Jackson.

In Memphis they are allowed to play TSAA teams and are allowed 12 scholarships (athletic) there are about 8 schools that could compete with JP and a couple ( MUS and CBHS) that JP JA MRA would not want to play in football.. JP MRA and JA are either going to have to join MHSAA or get in a conference with those schools private schools in Memphis as most private schools outside Jackson and Memphis are gong down in size......While the big three and the ones in Memphis and Desoto are growing ............The disparity in size will continue to increase..

Here in Alabama, all the private schools play in the same divisions with the public schools. There is no seperate leage for the academy/private schools.

Actually Evangel cannot "openly" recruit anymore than other schools, public or private. They are governed by LHSAA and are held to all rules that public schools are held to. Not that it doesn't happen, but not anymore than most places, but they have been popped a couple of times on players and had them ruled ineligible. Just FYI from west side of river.

like Tuscaloosa and Bessemer Academies, these are the middle of nowhere private schools that get a bad rep for their educational opportunities.
