I remember when Tom Dempsey made a 63-yarder. It was a record for a long time, and was a straight in kick rather than the current soccer style kick. He had a defective kicking foot, with the front of his shoe squared off.

This was back when the goal posts were on the goal line. The kick was from their own 37-yard line. Alex Karras was playing for the Lions. He says they are all laughing their butts off. Until he kicked it.

That didn't even try to block it.

AI says.....
"Tom Dempsey was born with a deformed right foot and kicked the record-setting 63-yard field goal using a custom-made shoe designed to accommodate his condition.
Dempsey’s story is one of extraordinary perseverance and athletic achievement. He was born without toes on his right foot and without fingers on his right hand. Despite these physical challenges, he pursued a career in professional football as a placekicker. To kick, he wore a specially designed flat-front shoe that allowed him to strike the ball with a unique technique.
On November 8, 1970, while playing for the New Orleans Saints, Dempsey kicked a 63-yard field goal against the Detroit Lions, setting an NFL record that stood for over four decades. The kick was remarkable not only for its distance but also because it came in the final seconds of the game, securing a dramatic win.
His custom shoe later sparked debate, leading the NFL to implement a rule in 1977 requiring that any shoe worn by a player with a physical disability must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe. This rule was informally dubbed the “Tom Dempsey Rule.”
Dempsey’s legacy remains a powerful example of overcoming adversity and redefining what’s possible in sports. His kick is still celebrated as one of the most iconic moments in NFL history."

Who remembers this kicking technique?

The tight end on my high school team kicked that way. Problem was, every time we scored someone had to fake an injury so he had time to tie his toes up for the XP
