Jake’s Current Stats and Rankings for the Rays this spring are below.
Note: All rankings amongst players with at least 13 AB’s, and may not include today’s activity.
Games Played: 11 (T-1st with 2 others)
AB: 18 (20th, although no one has more than 25 AB’s).
AVG: .444 (2nd)
SLG: .611 (8th)
Hits: 8 (T-2nd)
Doubles: 3 (1st)
Strikeouts: 1 (Tied for fewest with 2 others)
Walks: 1 (Tied for 16th with several other regulars)
Below is the current 40-man roster totals by primary position, and what it should come down to by opening day. 26 is the opening day number.
Pitchers: 23, which excludes 1 on 60-day DL. Very heavy here, will come down to probably 13 which is more or less the standard MLB number. Just those cuts will bring roster down to 30 players.
Catchers: 3….will come down to 2. Nobody carries 3 catchers. Brings roster down to 29.
Infielders: Teams typically carry 6. 8 that are primary infielders on current 40-man. Ha Seong Kim is not expected back until late April or early May….so he’s one that won’t be on the 26-man on opening day. That by itself gets the roster down to 28. Yandy Diaz, Brandon Lowe, Taylor Walls, and Junior Caminero are the starters who will all make the roster. That’s 4. Jose Caballero, Jonathan Aranda, and Curtis Mead are 3 others competing for a spot. Mead has had the best spring training of maybe anyone in all of baseball. Caballero doesn’t offer much that they don’t get from Walls, but he can at least play 3 infield positions. I think odd man out is Aranda, only plays 1B and doesn’t bring a ton of offense. But at least one of those 3 is out. That will bring roster down to 27.
INF / OF: 2 on the 40-man, Chris Morel and Richie Palacios. Both should make the roster due to versatility. Morel is expected to start in the OF. Slight chance that they may cut Caballero as well if they keep Palacios and Mead, since those guys both can help in the middle infield. If so, there’s your 26….as everyone else would make it.
Primary Outfielders: 4 on the 40-man are Jake Mangum, Josh Lowe, Jonny DeLuca, and Kameron Misner. Lowe and DeLuca will make it, and start on opening day.
Soooo…..that leaves just Jake and Misner. If they cut Caballero and Aranda, they both make it. If only one gets cut, you’re looking at them deciding between the two of them for the final roster spot. Both are having a good spring training. Tied with the same OPS. Misner is the younger, higher ceiling guy, but he was thoroughly exposed last season in his call up. There may also be a higher payday due to him for a call-up than Mangum….not sure.
But at this point, it looks very much like a flip of a coin on whether Jake makes the opening day roster….which is cool to see. Seems he is going to very likely be either the very last cut, or one of the last 2 takes. Worst case is that he’s probably next man up whenever any of a number of players hits the DL.
