He was the coach at Marion Military Institute in Alabama. Coached Pollorena.

A couple of things stood out to me:

Their roster had a lot of guys from Texas and Florida on it.

He coaches catchers and has a background of coaching pitchers and hitters.

I'm assuming and hoping gene got this from Cohen. I am under the impression that this guy is taking Mingione's spot on the staff and if I'm not mistaken, Minginone couldn't recruit previously. Anyone have any ideas about how this is going to work? I'd hate to have a good recruiter that can't go out and recruit.

"He's got to be extremely creative, and it's absolutely working your tail off to do it at a place like that," MSU head coach John Cohen said.

With MSU, Wells will work with catchers and hitters and coach first
base. He'll also run MSU's summer camps. He's not allowed to be on the
road recruiting, but he can of course be an asset when prospects visit
campus.

"It's a special position, it's a very difficult position, it's a
very challenging position, and it's important to get the right guy,"
Cohen said. "Even
though I think there were several candidates that were right there, I
feel like Jake was our best candidate for our position."

Since he is a "volunteer assistant" he can't recruit on campus. He can recruit on campus. That's why he will run camps.

My point about him having players from all over the country is that he has connections to people from some of the larger population states. He may not be able to actively recruit in person, but he can call a coach or a connection and ask questions and then we can send Butch or Nick out to see the player.
