Nothing wrong with that. I think he does one part of his job very well. But I also think he struggles to do another part of his job. So I understand why people feel like they do.

I'll give him credit for what he does well. But also imo he should be recruiting higher ranked better RBs at Nebraska. This isn't Connecticut where you have to get lesser guys. Developing is great but imagine what you get it you get a to tier talent AND fully develop him...

Up until EJ’s success NU has been a tough sale. All you had to do is read this board and watch the game video from the previous 7-8 years to make it real easy for a kid and his parents to look elsewhere. EJ’s success might help attract a top RB recruit this cycle. Kids want to win and I don’t blame them.

I'm sure EJs success won't hurt but let's be honest . EJ was a 5th round draft pick. Unless he blows up in KC and does something on the biggest stage I'm not sure that's enough.

Hell ND had 2 first round draft picks in the same year at RB. Year before I think OSU had 2 second rounders. I love EJ but that might be wishful thinking.

I'll be honest I just don't think EJ aims very high at the RB position when he recruits. He may have 1 or 2 4 star guys who might get some mild attention from but then inevitably he ends up signing that midto high level 3 star who is big and generally quick but not the fastest. Just seems like his MO to me.

That's not just EJ but Pat Stewart's NFL philosophy too, where his teams believed RBs are too expensive and burn out too quickly. But this isn't the NFL. Nelson has not developed. Out running lower talent to the edge isn't development. Nelson still can't read. Take away his long run, he was 9 for 35 Saturday. 3.89 YPC isn't bad. Those preimeter speed runs shrink in B1G, LB fill the alley with no hesitation. Let's wait until then before we crown Mekhi and EJ.

Lacey wasn’t aiming high enough? I just don’t think he values star rankings and recruiting hype as much as we do. The other factor now is where a kid fits in your NIL budget and our GM has some say in that.

I don't have a problem with not crowning them. That's a fair statement. I disagree on your Nelson comments . Do I think he's Emmett? No I don't but I absolutely think he's developed. His best runs to me haven't been the ones that you are talking about. FWIW I agree you aren't gonna out run BIG defenses to the edge. The runs I like were the ones in the interior. The one where he caught the dump off and ran through the middle of the secondary. The TD run he had in the bowl game against Utah.

From a guy who was basically an after thought I think he's already better than i and most fans thought he would be . Rule I think has maybe a higher upside but I'm not crowning either yet. Again you are right on that.

I'm not sure what you thought of Nelson BEFORE he played his first down but maybe you expected too much if you can't see his development.

My problem is when you get some of these guys like this the ceiling is only so high regardless of development. Which is what I DONT like about EJ. Bring in better talent and develop the same way and you have better players .

When EJ was recruiting Lacy he wasn't nearly as highly regarded. That's not a bad thing because he was right about Lacy and ahead of the other guys evals. I think the same might be true about Rule.

But there is a downside to that type recruiting as well. It looks like Ives and Booth.

We have one 3 star RB on the commitment list. That is EJ’s ceiling for recruiting. If EJ can take credit for Emmitt, and if the running backs look like they are being developed, you would think EJ could parlay that into better recruiting. But, no.

Helu was a 3 star when he committed. I’m over star rankings.

Ives is a kid from the east than Barthel thought could compete on the roster. He's a big kid and did fit with the more power run game Rhule wanted when he showed up. Booth is an NE kid that probably has one year left on the roster unless he wants to just be a practice and special teams player.
It seems at NU, for every blue chip Lucky and Burkhead that works out, a lower regarded guy like Roy Helu is as or more productive. That 3*ish slice of RB recruits can go either way. Rule has nice size, good speed and some decent moves for a freshman. And it seems like a really good kid and is coachable. Nelson also has decent speed and runs like a bull. Both kids do not like to go down on first contact.
If another good year of productivity comes from that group, NU will get more text and call back from blue chips out of both HS and the portal.

I don't know. A good recruiter has to get us in the door. Simply put I don't think EJ is a really good recruiter.

Nice story about Ives and Booth. Long story short they were both reaches and I think anyone with un biased eyes knew it.

Nelson was an after thought also but so far so good.

Yes he was. A low 3 star at that. That's your choice to be over rankings. I generally look at them with my own eyes but if you think there isn't a correlation then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm glad you aren't coaching the team lol. I kid but seriously some guys can play and some can't. Rankings aren't the be all end all. But to think they don't matter is borderline crazy..

Sort of a fun fact that of Helu and Castille, Roy was the lower rated by a good bit. Helu ended up playing all-conference ball and Castille ended up at 1AA Northwestern State.

Yeah but if not mistaken Castille was recruited as FB or a "big back" they maybe been calling it back then. Castille had one nice run when he lost a lot of weight and got in great shape . I wanna say it was 08 or 09 but I'm not sure.

Wasn't he the one who broke a big run or two in the bowl game against Clemson where Bo beat Dabo in Dabos first year?

I liked Rule’s video. Didn’t expect him to be quite as fast as he looks. Gimme a guy who break tackles and hang on to the ball all day long. He hits holes full speed which is something Emmit struggled with early at NU.
