your regular redshirt is gone. You can only get a medical redshirt if you play less than a certain % of games.

As long as he hasn't used his regular redshirt, there won't be any problem at all with him getting a medical redshirt. The only problems come in when you try to get a second medical redshirt. They review those much more closely and you generally can't get one unless both redshirt years were medical redshirts.

edited to add: Yes, if you've used the regular redshirt, medicals are scrutinized intensely. If you haven't then i don't know how hard the process is to gain that extra year.

It was just a plain ordinary redshirt year. You can only get a 6th year if BOTH redshirt years are medical redshirts. Although Jackie did get one for a player in the mid-90s because his first redshirt was due to having to spend a lot of time at home with a sick/dying parent.
