False, we've had solid rated classes with a few highly rated transfers, but we haven't signed much in HS until this class and we've taken some really bad transfers. Jans needs better evaluations, not more money.
It seems the evaluations aren’t what is hurting us.

We land Nwoko from Miami - he’s productive, but nothing close to what he’s doing at LSU this year. He’s currently averaging 13 a game and shooting 64% from the field.

Kanye Clary was a good player for 2 years. He comes here and gets in Jans’ dog house for whatever reason. Nobody else cares, he still gets great offer to go to Oklahoma State, and he’s averaging near double figures, over 5 assists per game, and has started 21 games. He’s been in 3 high level programs, and produced very well in 2 of them.

Riley Kugel comes in and is wildly inconsistent. Leaves for UCF, and he’s now averaging 14 a game, has increased his 3-point % to a career high 38.5%, and is starting every game.

Those are the only 3 impact transfers Jans’ has had in 4 years, which is abysmal in this climate. Most teams are adding 2-3 impact starters every single offseason. And all three of those players bottomed out at MSU when they had pretty good success after leaving….and in Clary’s case….also before arriving. Why is that?

Typical Mississippi State fan thought
No the typical State fan thinking is expecting something that has never happened before based on your prior history. 3 straight NCAA tournaments has only happened once every before in school history and our 2 sweet 16s were because the best player in school history happened to play here at the time.

Jans demeanor about Starkville has changed a little in my eyes. I wouldn't be shocked if he threw his name in the ring for a few other jobs. I don't know if he would be a top candidate after a tough year like this one.

Yeah apparently @msudawg1200 is of the type of thinking that landed us Rick Ray

he's listed on a very early list for K-State.

The issue this year is if he flirts - he loses even more good will among the fanbase because of the record. I think some gave him a pass previously because of the tournament appearances. Like I always said with Kiffin - easy way to squash this.
Adios Jans! I wouldn't hate it. And for those who say "Who could we get better?" IF we are serious about basketball, we can get someone better.

I honestly can't figure out where I stand with any of this. I don't think that there are more than maybe 5-10 teams that have figured out how to be consistently good during the NIL era, and the rest are attached to one giant yo yo. Good some years, bad others, somewhere in between most...

When a program is sinking the money that we're putting into coaching and players' salaries for MBK, seasons like this are tough to swallow, but you look around the country and we're far from alone. It's like every season is one giant crap shoot, and all you can do as a fan of a mid to lower tier program is just hope that you hit every now and then.

I guess I say all that to say that I'm not loving this season, but we've seen worse, a lot worse, and I'm still holding out hope that Jans is a guy that can hit big if he can somehow figure out how to get the right group to coach.

Basketball is the one sport that can turn around with just a few players ....let's face it you just never know who will mesh with what situation.....look years ago Kelvin Sampson was radio active and University of Houston took a chance ..we need to find our match ...the question is do we take an up and comer or a retread looking for the right situation......when Jans was hired we chose him over Florida's Golden and LSUs McMahon ...while Golden won a natty....our fanbase would not have accepted his creepy student stalking that he did last year ... so regardless you just never know ....would we be better off if we took Golden?

The thoughts in this thread are amazing. I'll just leave a few drive by comments.
1. Hubbard IS a prolific scorer BUT......it comes in steaks and he is a tremendous defensive liability. The last two years we had people who could mask that liability to some degree. Not so this year.
2. Getting MSU to the NCAA Tournament 3 straight years IS a big accomplishment that should not be minimized.
3. Our fans probably have the most distorted understanding of the usual state of our program in men's basketball than any other sport we play.
4. The real problem with this team this year is that they just aren't that good defensively. That is unlike Jans' teams. You can bet he is looking for people to correct that.

We never had a chance with Golden. Stricklin called Bruce Pearl to gauge interest and Pearl said Golden is me 25 years ago hire him and the rest is history

We had this same conversation last year, and yet we somehow managed to get even worse defensively after the offseason. I'm sure that Jans is looking for people to correct this, but is the problem really that he just whiffed in the portal or is it something more along these lines?

1. There are very few kids at the P4 level that have any interest in playing defense
2. The ones that will attempt to play defense are typically very limited in other skillsets
3. The ones that can do both aren't coming to State

I'm frustrated, but it's also really hard for me to believe that Jans has just been recruiting the wrong guys or that baseball's stealing all his NIL funds. I think a lot of us are underselling how difficult is his for him to go get the kind of player that he wants, and when we does get someone to try to fit his defensive mold, get ready because we're all gonna be b*tching about how much they suck at virtually everything else.

Interesting. I followed the search pretty closely and remember thinking who the heck is Todd Golden and thought McMahon was the right pick (don't put me on any search committee). I thought there was a forth being kicked around, Gates maybe?
Prompted me to look up who was coming and going that year and turns out it was a total of 59 schools making a change. A subset of interest and fun to read the names and who hit and who missed. There's Tang and poor Louisville. Added Xavier as one of those "damaged goods" coaches at the time.
That said, still good with Chris for at least another year and see if he can make a few adjustments.

Chattanooga: Lamont Paris / Dan Earl
Cleveland State: Dennis Gates / Daniyal Robinson
Florida: Mike White / Todd Golden
Georgia: Tom Crean / Mike White
Kansas State: Bruce Weber / Jerome Tang
Louisville: Chris Mack / Kenny Payne
LSU: Will Wade / Matt McMahon
UMass: Matt McCall / Frank Martin
Mississippi State: Ben Howland / Chris Jans
Missouri: Cuonzo Martin / Dennis Gates
Murray State: Matt McMahon / Steve Prohm
New Mexico State: Chris Jans / Greg Heiar
San Francisco: Todd Golden / Chris Gerlufsen
South Carolina: Frank Martin / Lamont Paris
Xavier: Travis Steele / Sean Miller

I remember Tang was the 3rd name. There were a couple mid major guys like Bob Richey at Furman and Richie Riley at South Alabama who were considered but it was never getting past McMahon or Jans
