I never said a disparaging word about him while he was here. BUT, he was never good, I couldn't believe people on this board thought he was great. I use to sit and watch him and think " what are you guys seeing that I'm not?" Made me question a lot of things about the folks on this board
We needed shooting and scoring so much that at the beginning it was worth trying to get him developed to get some of that on the court. The issue was he had no other skills and his weakness caused more problems than anything he helped solve. It was evident fairly quickly.

He pissed down his leg anytime he got trapped - almost a surefire turnover. Hell, bringing the ball up the court caused me to cringe knowing there was a good chance that any sort of press would cause him to melt.

Well not really. I dont really see how his ranking could lead to that based off his offensive talent? I really dont understand how anyone could. He doesn't really have offensive talent he has trouble dribbling the basketball.

I think you give the recruiting services way to much credit if you think their evaluations are somehow able to be differentiate between their pro readiness and their readiness right now or right out of high school. I dont think its that deep. Yeah players improve as they get older but I cant think of any pro player who wasn't clearly exceptional in his ability to stand out from his peers in college as well. You can always see that they are juat better. Jasper is not that. He sucks.
I’m not defending the recruiting services competence is doing what they’re intending, but I do know that they have explicitly and repeatedly stated that the primary objective of their high school basketball recruiting rankings is to predict a player's long-term professional potential—not how good he will be in college, much less how much he will contribute as a freshman.

The distinction is important because fans frequently interpret recruiting rankings as forecasts of how much immediate help a player will provide their college team. That is not what the rankings are really designed to measure. For example, Jasper Johnson was ranked as a top PG. That was entirely projection – maybe a terrible projection, but a future forecast nonetheless.

That is what they claim, but they also massively change ratings based on camp performances, which is a measure of how ready they are now.

Johnson was just a big miss by those services, it happens. This wasn't as egregious as Skal's performance vs his rating.

Some of you Boomers on here with your "iso ball" and "aau ball" comments are not going to like this next paragraph.

Jasper had 12 points in 29 mins on 5-10 shooting including 2-3 from 3 against Utah.

Some of you are spot on. JJ needs to get stronger and he needs to value possession of the ball more. But the Boomer comments about "my JV team could beat Hickory's varsity because they taught fundamentals back in my day"...stop it. Jasper is insanely talented and skilled. He currently has a strength and motor issue. Not to mention an uncle who's a complete turd and does nothing to help the kids public image.

Come on dude....
Jasper is good size for a collegiate wing, decent not elite shooter and can score in some traffic...again not elite.

But he has awful handles for a wing, isn't elite athletically at all and has very bad bball IQ. He isn't some potential Dwayne Wade that was made out to be. He's like Antoine Barbour for the Tubby Era.

Jasper did not improve here over the course of his freshman year. It remains to be seen if it was just him or a program problem of development. I know what I think. But I could be wrong. I read where Chandler said he was limited here. Was that just him or a program problem? Moreno was the same guy at the end of the season as the beginning. Was it him?

JJ was/is not good.
DJ Wagner is still in college.
Who's the 7 footer that left for Ohio St.? He was top five. Bradshaw?

He isn't elite athletically, but he's no slouch either. I think his IQ is probably higher than he gets credit for. He was, no doubt, a disappointment last year. I just think there are tools there. He's got work to do, obviously. The biggest question is if he's willing to do it and if he can find the right place to put that work in.

I don't think Pope is a player developer at all. I also don't think JJ has a very good work ethic and his motor/body language sucked. Probably a situation where both sides could/should shoulder the blame.

BOOMER HERE, in my day he would sit on the bench until he got stronger and learned fundamentals, but then again in my day you didn’t have social media where they can do their highlights and fool the young people into thinking they were the next MJ. But then again I’m an old boomer that hasn’t touched a basketball in 40 year, we didn’t play with the gather step, the switch the pivot foot or the hop then step back 3 steps before taking a step through.

He has some really good moments in the Tennessee game. Maybe a couple of nice dump downs to post players in other games. A big shot or two in others. Not much to speak of as his liabilities often made it impossible to keep him on the floor in a season where UK had huge scoreless runs.

Barbour was a jumping jack, if I recall correctly. Disappointing overall, but seem to remember one monster breakaway dunk.

Wait, Jasper isn't playing like an All American yet? All he needed to do was get away from Pope, I heard it here first....
Well, he averaged 10 points a game on the U19 gold medal winning FIBA team. And o read he scored 12 last night without a coach.

Seems he plays his best basketball when not coached by Pope. Coincidence?

He started yesterday verses Utah and played more of the SG spot (Utah won the game). Fred Payne played 35 minutes mostly at point. Moving Jasper off the ball seemed to help some. Though Oregon does kind of just run a disjointed AAU style of dribble and jack offense.

Played 29 minutes, 12 points on 5-10 shooting, 2-3 from 3pt land, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, 4 personal fouls, and 1 steal.

For context, Trey Campbell, the guy Jasper was guarding went for 20 (6-7 from 3), 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 turnovers, 2 personal fouls, and 2 steals.

The game has changed drastically. All of those moves you mentioned are used by special players to score a lot of points today. That said, JJ has plenty to work on to become a good player. If he chooses to work on them, he will be a good player. If he doesn't, he'll be just another kid that never reached his ceiling.

Largely accurate post here. Kind of odd from you. :ROFLMAO:

The thing is he has athletic ability and skills, just doesnt know or hasnt been shown how to use them at all!! Example: He's quick and has burst but the way he moves with the ball (constant cupping with every dribble) means he plays slow and easy to guard. He should be using his foot quickness to blow by guys to create shots and passes for others. Thats the other thing though, he's single focused on his own shot and doesnt seem to have any court awareness or play making sense at all. Shame

Would those special players be special if they didn’t legalize walking?

I have wondered if he would've improved more by staying at Woodford County and be challenged by tough defense designed to stop him every game ?? Just a thought ... would his ball-handling have been better ??
