HIs point was valid if you took it for commenting on that game but as all things Bilas-he was low key shading how Houston plays--much like he shaded (only outwardly) how Tennessee plays when they beat Duke. I got the feeling watching the game that Grant Hill clearly was upset with Houston and seemed to not enjoy what they are about. His comment at the start in Center Circle of "UF wants a track meet and UH wants a rock fight" was interesting because Houston had a top 10 offense this year and had shot makers with Cryer/Uzan/Sharp.

What a commentator who was focused on the game should've said is "Houston wants to keep the pace down because the faster pace favors open court basketball which is harder to neutralize great guards like Walter Clayton Jr" but as all Dookies do when they are sullen and sad--they fire passive aggressive shots.

It was certainly an interesting turn of events to start the second half.

Refs come out and call 2 off ball offensive post up and an off ball screen fouls on Florida to start the half before calling that weird off ball defensive foul and technical on Florida. You quickly had a 5 fouls on Florida to 0 on Houston situation, then the refs called a few quick ones on Houston to even the numbers up and it seemed like Houston got on their heels and never fully recovered.

It was bizarre going from very few calls on either team in the first half to Florida getting called for five in the first two and a half minutes of the second half and Houston zero. Florida got the T but the refs buckled because they immediately call three quick fouls on Houston on one possession. After that the calls piled up on Houston so that with five minutes left Houston was already well into the double bonus (graphic said 10+ bit I don' t know how many exactly and Florida was at 8. Just no consistency but what do you expect from Oglesby and Sirmons.

Dueling refs trying to push the line in one direction or the other!

People have to make money....

As a fan and former high school coach, I think the most frustrating thing is how the whistle often changes during the course of the game. Last night's NCAA Championship game was a prime example. Despite being extremely physical from the get-go, there were a total of 4-5 fouls called in the first half. At the end of the first half, I said to myself that the second half would be a whistle extravaganza and, unfortunately, I was correct. I'm not Nostrodamus -- we've all seen it happen far too many times to the point where it becomes the expected norm! In the second half, Florida had 5 or 6 team fouls before the first TV timeout, and both teams were in the bonus and double-bonus pretty early in the second half.

I understand that the intensity picks up in the 2nd half of a hotly contested game which rightly leads to more legit fouls being called, but last night was like watching 2 different games! I didn't have a "dog in the fight" last night, but I would have been furious over the complete 180 in the whistle if UK had been involved in last night's championship game. Whether it be the strike zone in baseball, or fouls in basketball, all a coach and team wants is officiating consistency. When everyone knows what a strike is, or knows what a foul is in each respective sport, the game flows much better, both players and coaches can adjust accordingly, and the fan viewing experience improves.

Hell, the UF player totally wrapped up the UH player on the last play and nothing was called. Definitely a foul in any other situation, it was almost a reverse bear hug.

He said there were five fouls combined on the two teams in the first half, and 23 in the second half.

Things like that should be put higher in the story. It truly affected the game.
If I remember correctly, one of the announcing crew said that Florida felt they weren't tough enough in the first half so they told everyone to bring more physicality. That would explain the difference between halves and the five fouls called on Florida pretty quickly.

I think there's probably some truth to this. Both coaches likely told their players that fouls were not being called, so up the aggressiveness and see how far you can push the envelope in the 2nd half. Again, as a former coach, I know I would have told my team the exact same thing during halftime. However, that mindset is a direct result of the refs not setting the tone early because they swallowed their whistles in the first half. The entire complexion and flow of the game might have completely changed if the refs had blown 2-3 quick fouls (there were plenty of legit opportunities) before the first TV timeout.
