Weaknesses: He has shooting touch out to the 3PT line but is far from a consistent threat to stretch the floor and can be too comfortable settling for quick 3s, rather than looking to get easier shot attempts. 3PT shooting: 24.3% 3PT% 1.9 3PTA OTE 2022-23, missed his only 3PT attempt over 6 games at the U16 Americas Championship in 2023, 10% 3PT% 0.9 3PTA Nike EYBL 2023 … While his stroke from the foul line doesn’t look bad, he can improve his free throw shooting: 56.5% FT% OTE 2022-23, 57.1% FT% U16 Americas Championship 2023, 61.5% FT% Nike EYBL 2023

More about his high school analysis here: https://www.nbadraft.net/players/jayden-quaintance/

Was hoping there'd be some hope for his shooting. Alas, twas none.

Here's hoping Pope and the rest of the staff can get him to figure out his 3pt shot and free throws. He looks like he's got a bit of a goofy stance and in his NCAA highlights, looks like he rushes shots instead of getting set. Here's hoping.
I'm no rhodes scholartactitian but I think he might shoot more good better if he got the hair out of those darn eyes lol every picture it looks like that has to be hard to see

One thing I want to bring up about the Quaintance family is how they handled the transition from Cal's Staff to Pope and they didn't immediately write off Pope. They showed respect and were open minded after Cal left. Know that Travis Graf is close with the family and he's always spoken in respectful manner of how they operate.

Hope this works out because there's nobody in the country more talented physically when healthy. The guy was/is a freak at his age for what he can do--it's far more than defense--he's got tremendous hands/passing/ball handling abilities for someone so young and he'll reunite with former Team Thad teammate Jasper Johnson at UK now.

Heal up big fella and love that Pope/Staff were willing to take a risk here. I'd have been hesitant but I respect those who are risk takers and what the staff is doing. Love the Portal addition/roster building so far!
You thinking he will take Williams spot? Move Garrison to the 4?

This is not a gamble. He’ll be fine. The brilliance in medical science today is unsurpassed.
Great news for Cats fans!

Regardless of how good medicine has gotten in a lot of ways, it is still a gamble...It's a gamble worth taking, but one nonetheless.

I can't count how many patients I have had with complications from surgeries that were even less risky that ACL repair. Regardless, here's to hoping he heals back to 100% and dominates for the Cats.

Definitely a high upside signing. If you have a chance to sign a projected lottery pick who put up 9 and 7 and made the All Defensive Team as a 17 year old in a power conference, you just about have to take him. He’s a potential game changer as long as he recovers from his surgery as expected.

My only worry is that with both him and Dioubate signing, that just about has to be all we’re planning to add in the frontcourt, and I don’t see any consistent shooting at all there unless we’re seeing Kam Williams as more of a stretch 4. It’s an interesting change in approach that I hope pays off.

There is no high risk taking this kid. We have three guys that are able to hold down 4/5 until he comes back from the injury (4 if Kam can play small ball 4)

He’s only going to add a monster presence down low when it comes to defense and rebounding. May end up starting at the end of the year.

I stated in one of the other JQ threads that I think there is potential there for it. Garrison at least has a decent stroke from the perimeter, and he only shot slightly worse than Carr this past season. Not to mention, Pope multiple times stated he thought BG would shoot MANY more threes next season.

If Garrison develops that part of his game, it also only helps his pro potential.

That's what attracted them. They loved the freedom the bigs got in getting a rebound, bringing the ball up, playing all over the court.

As for what I expect--health is #1 and then we'll go from there. I'm not a medical expert but my experience/players I've coached having surgeries/injuries is everyone is different in how quickly they recover and how soon they can get to their maximum ability again.

One thing I'll add about the risk factor UK took that is very intelligent is JQ is a baby. He doesn't need to rush back to be some NBA Lottery guy immediately. If the process isn't going as quickly....he would still be a teenager if he needed a 3rd year in CBB. So the #1 thing is to get healthy.

The kid plays hard. I'll take that coupled with that talent he has. I don't think we'll gripe about him ever taking plays off, because he won't. I'm thrilled we got him.

That is crazy that he won't be turning 18 until this summer. With the body and instincts he already has, on top of the experience of already playing major college basketball, his ceiling is insane. If he stays healthy, imagine what he will look like in 2 years at 20 years old, because this is the age when players really start to develop into men.

Everyone that was mad about Pope not landing a big fish. Well, he just pulled in a whopper. If Quaintance is healthy, he might be the most talented player in college basketball next year. I would take him over Boozer any day of the week.

Even if he sits til January he puts this team in the thick of title talk. We are very balanced great job mark pope !
He had the surgery five days ago, if he's sitting until January, he'll be next to no impact for next years team, way too much missing time.

Glad he's a Wildcat just a little worried about the injury considering what we just went through this past season. Does this mean we're out on the Robert Morris guy?

I'm fine with his hair off the court, it's his head, he can do whatever he wants with it. BUT, if I'm coach, I'm a little concerned about his peripheral vision on the court. If you look at some of his pics, his hair almost looks like blinders on a horse. I might be trying to talk him into a headband or some other way to get his hair out of the way. But, I'm thrilled he's a Cat! Should be fun to watch next season no matter what.

So getting a starter with a torn ACL, shoots less than 20% from three and ~50FTs is not a risk, hmmm, interesting, better yet, fascinating.
He's not being brought here NOT to shoot threes or FTs, ridiculous. He's part of the inside presence for defense, rebounding that this team glaringly lacked last year and will open up space for the real shooters. Shooting can be fixed, size, strength and the dog part can't.

If Garrison gets his maturity in line and listens to the coaching staff, he’s an NBA player. The size and natural ability is there.

Well, I was wrong, which is par for the course🤣. I didn’t think he was a fit and worried about his injury. But hey, he is a Cat again. Love the defense and rebounding. If he can pass and at least not break the backboard when shooting a layup like Amari(only complaint with him) he is going to be great on the other end. Rebounding is about feel and desire. Some people have it and some don’t. JQ and MD have it in spades.

I would still love to get Pierre or Yates. Love JJ and AL, but they need to be pushed and given some time to grow physically and catch up to the speed of the game like Chandler. They will be exceptional by the end of the year. Pierre would be awesome because of his age and length.

Man, if only the coaching staff had asked the opinion of Philstat on a message board for his opinion before making such a risky offer. (and he had surgery on March 19, NOT 5 days ago)

ACL surgery is not the same as it was in 1990. We don't need him to shoot the 3 any more than we needed amari to shoot the 3. He's here to protect the rim, score the ball at the rim, and rebound. We can fix the FT shooting with hypnosis.
