The really sad part about what has happened and is happening at Mt Airy is that we do have players.
But for whatever reason we cannot get them on the field. The past couple of weeks we lost more players to concussion DURING practice than in games.
Then this week it was also off field "activities" that got a player (and his girlfriend) suspended from school for two weeks.
Then another senior reinjured a leg/knee in PE class.
But, in my humble opinion, none of this compares to what is happening on the sidelines. And no, each and every one of the people on the sidelines is a very good person.
But over the years, Mt Airy has prided itself in having an excellent coaching staff, top to bottom. Mt Airy had an identity, a style of play.
When I moved back to Surry County and to Mt Airy in 1982, one of the great former players told me the really good part of MA football was that over the years the Bears won almost every game it was supposed to win BUT the coaching staffs were so good that we won 1 to 3 games a year we were not supposed to win.
Let me just say, that it is not, and I see no evidence that this will be, the case anytime soon.
And from my vantage point, it really is not as important whether we win or lose, as it is how we win or lose. Unfortunately, after the first two wins against really good Starmount and East Wilkes teams, I said on this forum that Mt Airy was not deserving of the high rankings. I got soundly and roundly beat upon the head and shoulders both on here and, to a fair degree, in our tailgating group. I am not getting that anymore.
I actually wish that I was, I wish I had been wrong in my assessments.
